Waking Up and Hamlet

Recently teaching Hamlet, and after being a Waking Up user, this quote hits differently now:

"Why then tis none to you, for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so....."

Borges' Buddhist Influences?

Hey guys, I recently started reading Borges after many recommendations. After reading Funes and Tlon, I can't help but think that Borges is heavily influenced by Buddhist philosophy? In Funes, the curse of attention to details reveals the constant flux of the universe and the stable notion of a noun doesn't make any sense, similar to Buddhist emphasis on impermenance. Tlon's focus on idealism seems very Buddhist. The notion of existence being reducible to one's current mental state and with the past/future merely existing in the abstract. The idea that causality seeks to exist because there is only the current moment, and the use of language that denotes a continues process rather than a single noun, and the notion of a single entity, or the mind-at-large via consciousness all seems so Buddhist that I'm sure there's some influence?

Apologies to the Borges devotees, I have literally no context of the author so sorry if all of this may seem painfully obvious.

Returning to SurgingPost Acl

Hey guys, about three weeks away from returning g to surfing post acl surgery. Already bodyboarding on the surfboard for some conditioning. Just wondering how everyone’s first experiences were returning to the water? Even just bodyboarding the surfboard and get by waves in the leg can feel weird and awkward still despite passing all land metrics with agility and strength.

The Handmaiden….wow.

I recently went on a Park Chan-wook binge which culminated with The Handmaiden……surely this is considered his masterpiece?

Structurally, the film is incredible effective in the way it employs it’s twists. Once the first twist arrives, it’s impossible to not be invested.

Obviously it’s abrasive approach to sex is confronting, but it didn’t seem exploitative. It seemed to be essential for exploring the sexualisation of women under the male gaze in a patriarchal context, but also to highlight the fundamental difference between infatuation and genuine affection.

And thematically, it seemed a beautiful historical recreation of a period rife with power dynamics that two women attempt to transcend. And for all his disturbing creations and his effortless ability at creating fundamentally icky characters, the Uncle has to be his most sinister creation.

The Ending of Daredevil was so Captivating

I think one of the most brilliant aspects of this season is that the writers really flexed their muscles, especially when it came to the central characters.

We’ve seen Daredevil, Bullseye, and Kingpin many times before, but the writers did a brilliant job this season with reinvigorating these characters in refreshing ways. The way in which they used Bullseye with the redemptive element and the manner in which this tested Matt’s own belief in redemption was brilliant and felt distinctly different. But man, one of the best aspects of the show was the final, legal showdown between Fisk and Matt. Despite meeting so many times in previous seasons, their face-to-face showdown in court was completely captivating with Matt’s complete commitment to the self-destruction of his own secret identity.

Brilliant stuff!

Hey guys, is the t-shuffle test a good indication that graft is good and strong? I did it in 11 seconds. Just wondering if this is one of the best metrics for challenging knee stability prior to returning to sport?

I usually do a lot of shitting on Gen Z for their prioritising of phones over experience at live music, but man, the Gen Z crew at Sydney were absolutely amazing. They were absolutely losing themselves to each track, especially Around the Fur, and genuinely connecting with the moment without the distractions of phones. Was epic to see!
