The lackluster guest list is a result of Leftfield Media being cheap?

So I was talking to an organizer of a large west coast con, who I’ll refrain from naming due to privacy reasons, about the lackluster line up of Anime NYC and they speculated that it’s not because of scheduling issues due to the proximity of other cons like Anime Expo, but it’s simply a matter of ANYC’s organizers being cheap. They said that there’s so much talent in the industry that hasn’t been booked, so it should have been easy to book more people. The belief was that the lack of guests is a result of them wanting to rake in more profit.

For those who are unaware, bringing in quality guests is costly for the organizer. The more notable guests often have a flat booking fee as well as a guaranteed minimum, where the Con pays out the difference in sales if the guaranteed minimum is not met. Cons rarely get a cut of the sales made by the guests from autographs or photos, and when they do, it’s minuscule, so their revenue mostly comes from ticket sales. With that in mind, it’s important to note that Leftfield Media (ANYC’s organizer) is a for profit company owned by private equity, while a lot of the bigger Anime cons are often run by nonprofits, including Anime Expo & Otakon.

We spent a bit of time cross-referencing the guest list between Anime Expo & Otakon, and while their guest list is indeed robust, there’s no way that’s the entire talent pool that was available. Anime is an industry that goes back a 100 years, it’s impossible for two cons to book everyone. My conversation with the organizer finished off with them chuckling, showing me a photo of the people who run Leftfield Media, and asking “Do these look like Anime fans to you?”

What do you think, is it simply a matter of ANYC’s organizers being cheap? I’m sure we can all rattle off a ton of names that have not been booked for anything these past 3 months, so I don’t believe the proximity to other cons being the reason for the lack of guests hold water.

I did not think I would cry over a Nolan film, but here I am

No, it’s not the Argos scene. Though my eyes did well up a little since I have a dog myself, it was the flashback to the sack of Troy that did it for me. What a poignant scene. I saw where the story was going at the halfway point, but this one scene hammered it home for me. It was the moment they lost everything that held humanity together, and it’s hard for me to not draw parallels to what we’ve lost in the past decade. Also, I loved how they presented the Trojan horse as a cowardly act. Even as I kid I did not find the tale to be heroic at all. It was odd that my textbooks always framed it that way. Seeing it presented in a negative light was refreshing. Also Also, the witch calling Odysseus and his men pigs was a wonderful bit of foreshadowing to the reveal of what happened at Troy. Ugh, I love this movie. It’ll be the first time I’m doing a rewatch in a theater for over a decade and I’ll be doing it in real 70mm IMAX this time:)

What festival is my family is celebrating?

So my family is celebrating some kinda festival today with a feast, but a Google search returned no results. They refer to it as 節, but it doesn't clarify which festival. They also have a habit of doing celebrations a little early or later depending on everyone's schedule, so I'm sure today is not the exact day. Which festival would they likely be celebrating? My family is Toisan for extra context. TY

I finally made it out to Queens Night Market yoooo

Took awhile, but I finally made the trek out to Queens Night Market. It was a bit smaller than I had imagined, but there was still a solid amount of good eats. I did a pretty poor job of noting which food stalls we visited, but I do remember what I enjoyed most. Moon Man was the stand out of the bunch for their Indonesian desserts. Their Pandan rice cake, served warm, was particularly good. Being Cantonese, I had to check out the Hong Kong food stall as well, which served a nice selection of street snacks. We went with the sesame/peanut sauce noodles, a classic. Yak in Town is the last stall I’m 100% sure I dined at. Their fried yak dumplings was the most unique thing I had there. I found the meat to be a little gamey, similar to lamb, so if gaminess is something you enjoy, def try it. There were two more stalls we visited. One of which was either Cambodia Now or Thai Yum Mama. What drew me to this stall was their garlic noodles, a California favorite. We also got some Crab Rangoon. Both were quite good, though the garlics noodles weirdly came with a single shrimp. The very last stall served tacos and unfortunately, this was the least memorable. We didn’t take down the name for this one. Around $40 - $50 was spent between the two of us; pretty good value there. My one critique would be the rather small selection of artisans. I went in hoping for more variety and an opportunity to do some thrifting, but they were mostly trinket sellers.

Canton Blu: A solid alternative to East Harbor in Sunset Park

Finally got to check out the newly(ish) opened dim sum spot in Sunset Park this week. It was pretty busy on a Monday, a good sign. All the dumplings and steamed rice rolls had delicate skins with a nice elasticity to em. East Harbor is still superior when it comes to their pastries and more traditional dishes like the phoenix claw & the shrimp-stuffed eggplants, but Canto Blu is a good alternative if you want to avoid a long wait on the weekends. The youtiao & fried shrimp rice rolls were particularly good.

edit*

Correction, the name of the restaurant is Canto Blu, not Canton. Sorry for the mistake.

Is this really it for the guest list?

A lot of people were saying they’ll announce more guests once we reached 2 weeks before the convention, but it’s 10 days away & we’ve heard nothing. It’s still the same 56 guests with 20 of them being VTubers or influencers. Surely this is not it for a $90 a day ticket . . .

Best Guo Bao Rou (Northeastern style Sweet & Sour pork)

Looking for recs of your favorite Guo Bao Rou in the NY area. For the unaware, its the Dongbei(NE) style sweet & sour pork. This version is sliced thinly, coated with a light batter, & features a much thinner sauce unlike the thicker southwestern/Americanized variety.

The fearmongering by people like Baldilocks in this sub needs to stop

I know the people who reopened this subreddit did it in good faith, but it's obvious that there's people on this sub, Baldilocks in particular, who only use it as a platform to fearmonger. 90% of this guy's posts are about crimes or perceived crimes by people of black or Hispanic descent. The only time he posts is when he can use it as an opportunity to attack local politicians on the left. I know this guy is Asian btw, likely Chinese American judging by his comment history before he wiped it, and he never posts or comments on any criminal stories when it pertains to Asians, only Latinos and Blacks. And when the perpetrators are unnamed, such as the issue with the trash build up in Sunset Park, he blames "the undocumented immigrants" by default without any proof. Let's just call a duck a duck here, this guy is using this sub to drive up far right sentiment. There's no attempt to build community, no sharing of things to do or places to eat. Nothing positive comes out of this account. His only aim is to be divisive. If the mods are ok with letting this sort of content take over this sub, they might as well close it.

They’re gonna have Soulja Boy & Chumlee as guests at this rate

I can’t be the only person who thinks this guest list is anemic. 56 guests with 14 of them being VTubers and 6 being influencers/cosplayers? That’s 35% of the guest list being people who don’t work in the anime industry. I suppose they’re anime-adjacent, but they feel like filler. It doesn’t help that their marquee guest, the author of Kiki’s Delivery Service, dropped out.

Looking for a photographer for a proposals in Prospect Park

Hi, I’m looking for a photographer for a proposal in Prospect Park in the early morning. A dog will be included in the photos, so being able to work well with pets is preferred. We’re hoping for photographs that’s stylistically a bit more candid and less stock-photoy if that makes sense. TY.
