Fitness is so important as a gamer

If you’re like me and work an office job while also being a gamer, it’s incredibly easy to spend nearly the entire day sitting. At work, during the commute, and then again all evening while gaming.

There’s nothing wrong with gaming, but that much inactivity can gradually take a toll on your posture, mobility, energy, and overall health. This is just a reminder to make movement part of your routine, even if you aren’t trying to become a fitness fanatic.

Take short walking breaks, stretch between matches, stand up while waiting in a lobby, and please try to fit in a few workouts each week. You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight; a little consistent movement is much better than none.

Taking care of your body can also make gaming more enjoyable. Better energy, less back and neck pain, and improved focus mean you can keep enjoying the hobby without feeling wrecked afterward.

Something I've done before is incorporated pushups and sit-ups in between matches or changing games. Small habits like that make a huge difference

The flow of combat in HLLV feels considerably worse than HLL

After playing the beta for Hell Let Loose Vietnam (HLLV), I came away with the conclusion that it was nowhere near as fun as Hell Let Loose (HLL). I'm not allergic to Vietnam settings, as I loved Rising Storm 2 Vietnam, but something about this game feels off.

IMO, it comes down to pacing/flow. HLL does a very good job of straddling between like Battlefield and Squad in that regard. Combat is semi-frequent, you've got a good mix of long-range and short-range combat, there's an established frontline but also lots of room for flanking. You've got combat, and then you've got lulls after that let you decide what you want to do.

HLLV didn't have any of that. The infantry gameplay largely boiled down to walking through bushes and then unloading half a mag at anything that moved. I could hardly discern an actual frontline (if there even was one), there wasn't really time to strategize, nor was there a point in doing so anyways. You could kind of flank, but then there wasn't much point in doing that anyways as you'd inevitably have to enter a patch of jungle and engage in the same shooting gallery guessing game as everyone else.

And unlike say Rising Storm 2 Vietnam, HLLV doesn't have the same kind of crunchy and satisfying gunplay, so it isn't nearly as fun to do that here. Suffice to say, I'm not really sure the Vietnam setting (as it's currently been developed) adds anything to the series.

The Good, The Bad, and The Meh (Versus Only)

The Good:

  • Movement. Less wall bouncing, more sliding and jumping. It opens up a lot of dimensions for outplaying opponents.
  • The maps. Only 2 maps so far, but I've enjoyed both and feel like they both play sufficiently different but fun in their own ways.
  • Power weapons. After trying the Retro Lancer, Longshot, Acid Shotgun, Mulcher, and Nades. I feel like all of these weapons are sufficiently strong and provide unique experiences. This is probably the first ever Gears where I can say the Mulcher is worth using in a majority of situations.
  • Lobbies staying together after matches.

The Bad:

  • Performance. This is easily the worst running game in my library. And that's being compared to several really demanding games like Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater. DLSS seems broken. I struggle to stay above 60 FPS at 4k (all low settings) on a 3080.
  • Melee. It's useless. Especially with certain weapons like the Longshot where it locks you into a direction for each swing. In its current state no one is going to use melee.
  • Ammo pickups. Seems like a small complaint, but I absolutely hate how you pick up a Gnasher when you're just taking extra Gnasher ammo. Should be an entirely different animation.
  • Trading. Way too many kill trades. I average like 4-5 a match.

The Meh:

  • Executions. I know were only looking at 2 variations of some sort of curb stomp, but, I just don't like it. I don't feel the intensity or the humiliation there, just feels like a low-effort animation.
  • The Lancer. I'm all for avoiding a Gears 3 situation where a single Lancer on an active could lock down lanes, but as it stands the current Lancer is far too weak damage wise with a ton of spread/bloom. The Snub Pistol is currently a better option for any kind of ranged play.
  • No chainsaw battles or grenade tagging. Why are these gone?
  • Weapon sounds. They sound muted and flat. The Longshot's satisfying head pops are gone. Overall I feel like weapon audio isn't as crunchy and impactful as it is in previous titles.

Am I crazy for actually kind of liking family law?

Rising 3L here. I’ve been working at a small law firm practicing family law (mostly divorces and child custody stuff) and honestly, I’m kind of liking it? The actual black letter law of family law is fairly simple, the case facts are usually pretty “interesting”, and the actual work is often just filling in info in templates. It’s also cool to sometimes play lawyer, therapist, and accountant all in one

I’m not sure if it’s at my specific firm only, but it also seems like family law secretly has good work life balance. Most hearings and mediations are on zoom, and there aren’t really emergencies or deadlines beyond court hours. Generally 9-5 here with lots of opportunities for WFH

I have also seen that this field can inundate you with some heavy shit, but for the most part I’ve been good at turning it off as soon as I leave work.

I’m just curious if the juice is worth the squeeze. I’m working in a large city in the southeast for what it’s worth
