Hello penguin gang! We have finally come to what I see as the conclusion of the last season from the cameras of Isla Tova. This was taken in the afternoon rather than the morning. At this time of day the Magellan penguins are coming out of the water and up the beach towards the camera, hopefully with bellies full of fish. The focus of this video is the teenage penguins, which have not developed a stripe along their bellies and have more white feathering on their face than the adults.

At about 2 minutes, we can see the group get closer to the camera, and there are six chicks that are staying relatively close together! This is reminiscent of the six chicks that would hang out together at the nest before they fledged of course. Are they the same chicks? Impossible to say for certain but I like to believe that the penguin gang sticks together.

I do have some more videos of the adult Magellan penguins returning to their nest a couple months after this, but I will be taking a break from the Rewilding Argentina videos. We also have the YouTube channel, Banda de pingüinos, which has many videos of the nests over the course of last season. The Magellan penguins and livestream should be returning in October, when the penguins return for another breeding season.

Another sunny morning on the beach of Isla Tova, Chubut, roughly 1000 kilometers from the southern tip of South America. The Magellan penguins gather to watch the waves and bask in the sunrise before they enter the water to swim out to sea and hunt for fish. They like to move as a group, as there is safety in numbers

Last flashback for this week! This another set of videos from around the 1 month old mark of the little penguins chicks, and they are getting very active. Here we can see the chicks milling about the nest, doing some big wing flapping, showing off their beaks/mouths, and of course bothering Mrs Blue for more food. Parents only have so much to give and the chicks get some nips from mom to tell them that she’s all out.

Towards the end, we can even see that one of the chicks is outside the nest and comes back in to see if there’s any fish to be had. At this age, the chicks will explore a little bit outside, and the parents sometimes feed outside as it gets more crowded and pushy in the nest.

Here we have some video of the chicks at closer to 1 month old, and boy have they grown; and they’ve still got some growing to do! Their appetite grows as they do, and now we start to see the parent’s patience start to wear thinner. One can only take so much begging!

First we have Mrs Blue at the nest, tending to her hungry chicks. Then we can see the kids by themselves for a bit. Followed by another feeding session, this time from Mr Blue! We get a good view of his white spot near his tail as well, which is how we can differentiate between the two parents.

Hello penguin gang! We’re back to the original Oamaru Nest from earlier this year, in February when these chicks were just over three weeks old. This is when the parents started leaving them on their own during the day while they both went to the sea to get fish. I’ve included some stills of the kids by themselves during the day, and we have some video of Mrs Blue feeding the kids as well.

(If you’ve been following along you may remember I uploaded some of the videos in this one a few months ago before I started chronicling these chicks chronologically)

Also, hope people don’t mind the jam music playing in the background of these videos. If anyone is interested the songs you can hear are Woah There and Shadow, both by a little Connecticut band called Eggy 🥚🍳🐧

Every morning, the little blues gather at the top of the beach and wait for others to arrive; once they have sufficient numbers, they will feel confident enough to descend the rocky hill and enter the water.

In this video, first we have some penguins making up their minds about whether to head down or not. In the next couple of clips from a couple of days later, we can see a congregation of korora in the rainy morning. A bit later, some groups converge and head down to the water; as the camera turns, at 3min and 6sec, you can see one of the penguins seems to take quite a tumble! The waddle proceeds and makes their way towards the waves.

Hope these two blues stay safe! There has been recent news of an avian flu in these parts of the world and word is that there is an initiative to vaccinate over 5000 of these cerulean seabirds

More Magellans on the playa!

Hello penguin gang! I have compiled just a few more videos for my rewind on the Rewilding Argentina series.

We are back on the beach of Isla Tova, Chubut, where the Magellan penguins gather in the morning before heading out to see. This morning they seemed cautious. A group would get into the water, but then all emerge back out only moments later. I could not tell if there was something in the water deterring them, or if they were just practicing precaution. You can see a couple splashes out on the water after the 8:40am timestamp.

Another edition of this rewinding series! We see the chicks by themselves before dinner, but both parents were present at a point during this night again. I love how the parents preen each other very tenderly in this video, as well as how the chicks snuggle with the parent at the end.

Hello penguin gang! After a few days out fishing at sea, the Papa Penguin comes back to the nest ready to start his shift! The pair greet each other enthusiastically, with the male looking wet. He wasted no time getting back to the missus. However, Mama Penguin seems a little hesitant to let him take over. After some nudging, she relents. There is a good view of both eggs at the 6:18.50pm timestamp as they exchange spots. Mama wants to make sure these eggs are well taken care of.

Howdy y’all! Didn’t see one of these up yet so I figured I’d give it a shot! I just got hooked on these mf strings recently but boy do these boys have some chops!

The venue, the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, sits on the Kanawha River. This flows east from the Ohio River which lends its shape to WV’s northwestern border. Charleston itself lies to the west of the Allegheny Mountains. This will be their 8th show in West Virginia. It looks like they have never covered Country Roads before. I recently visited West Virginia for the first time on a road trip with my wife, where we stopped by New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to see the New River Gorge Bridge, which is only an hour away from Charleston. It was pretty cool!
