Added a Light to EDC for the First Time

Bear with me because it's my first time trying to post images.

I added a light to my EDC and wanted to answer some of the questions I had when researching for the next person hyperfixating.

For context I am 5'8" 175 lbs athletic build and I usually carry a G19.4 at 12:30 with a Tenicor Certum 3 with the pillow and several different belts. I use a Certum Lux 4 Multi Light now.The light I added was a TLR-7 HLX. Here were my questions:

1.) Does it stick out too far and become uncomfortable when sitting?

I wore the gun in the Certum Lux 4 without a light for about a week. I actually found it more comfortable than the Certum 3 because it was wider and flatter which was neat because the Certum 3 was already really comfortable. I have not been able to tell a difference in comfort at all with the addition of the light. The few pictures I found of holstered TLR-7 HLXs were taken from a front angle and over-emphasized how far it sticks out. It goes about 1/8" past the end of the holster and if I didn't know I had added the light I would be unable to tell. I can sit on a curb without raising my belt beforehand and experience no discomfort. Even if I did feel it the holster is so adjustable that I don't think I would have any problem fixing it. There is no difference in concealment for me.

2.) Is the light too bright indoors at night with white walls?

No, I didn't find it too bright at all. It seems perfect with the SLB9 battery. If I stand in the pitch black arms length away from the wall and stare directly into the hotspot it can take about 1/2 seconds to find the dot after I activate it. Back up irons are obviously visible immediately. If I shine it into the mirror to get the other perspective I involuntarily shut my eyes and have to force them open. If you switch to a CR123A battery you get an advertised 550 lumens instead of 1100 and 11000 candela instead of 23000.

3.) Are the controls easy to reach with medium-size hands?

When I draw my index finger lands on the top of the low switch perfectly. I have to very slightly adjust my grip if I want to use my thumb on my support hand for momentary on function (just hold the switch down for more than 1/4 second). I love the controls. I have not tried the high switch.

4.) Does it look cool?

Yeah. Yeah it does. At least 8% cooler than no light plus you can see.

Disclaimer is that I have never used any other pistol light so I don't know if the 7x is "good enough." But for $20-30 more and no discomfort I cannot think of a reason to get something else.

Side note I put in a Glock Performance Trigger with the NP3 Overwatch precision connector and I must have gotten something in my eye during installation because the first time I dry-fired it water started coming out of my eyes. Definitely not tears of joy.

Where Do We Go From Here?

I feel like the racial divides in the U.S. are in a weird state right now. I am a white man for context. It seems like I meet fewer obviously racist people and hear fewer offhand racist comments than I did 15 years ago from regular people (i.e. not famous or politicians). However if you look at the media or you listen to famous, rich, or political people it seems like there are even more racially motivated policies and conversations than there used to be. Not a Trump supporter but it feels like this is even bigger than just the current administration (although they are definitely not helping). Like it has been ingrained into our society and government.

I will admit that I used to think racism was something that we had largely moved on from in society aside from a few *ssholes. I thought we were finally getting to a place where people would recognize how dividing people based on race is like dividing them based on hair color or shoe size.

Then I saw a somewhat recent video on r/all from r/BlackPeopleofReddit where a guy got the cops called on him for sitting in a bank parking lot, in a car, while he was *waiting for the bank to open.* The white bank manager (who ironically looked a lot like Mr Wuncler) said to the cop when he came inside "Thank you for coming, yeah I was worried about *that one.* And I was like "Wait. Hold up. People really do this?" Then I read comments with a bunch of personal stories about similar situations. I saw another video of a guy getting stopped by police for *looking at a cop while wearing a backpack.*

The most impactful comment to me was a person who talked about how the worst part is trying to remain calm and not feed into the situation. It got me thinking about how infuriated I would be by the sheer stupidity of that situation and how that could then give the cop an excuse. I no longer think things are doing as good as I used to.

So after all that my question is how do we move forward as a society? I used to think that if everyone would just start ignoring race it would be fixed but now I realize that would just let idiots have free reign to make racist policies. On the other hand I truly believe that politicians and the media actively work to keep us divided as a way to maintain control. How does a society balance protecting minority races without being condescending (ex: "you can only succeed if *we* make it easier for you and you can only advance to this limit that *we* picked")? How do we, as every day people, reduce the divide and refuse to be manipulated by ignorance? What do we teach our kids?

Edit: I think a couple of things I said weren't worded clearly and are being misconstrued, which is my fault.

When I referred to "protecting minorities" what I meant specifically was preventing anyone from creating or enforcing discriminatory practices regardless of their specific race.

The part about the politicians and media involvement in racial divides was not intended to say that racism only exists on TV. I was saying I believe the very real and apparent racism that people are experiencing can be influenced or worsened by people in positions of political or financial power to try to keep people focused on divides and differences rather than the ways they abuse their power. An example is how much harder it would be to pander to specific groups before an election if those groups were less socially isolated from each other and how much easier it is for them to commit crimes if no one is focused on them.

Effective Auto Brightness Suggestions

I have a bad astigmatism that is heavily reactive to red dot brightness. Not a big deal if I am shooting at a range where I can adjust the brightness manually, but I am looking for a new optic for my CCW. For context, I have tried all the colors including gold and red blooms the least for me.

My specific problem with the carry optic I currently have (407k) is that if I set the brightness to not be washed out in daylight and I transition to dim light (i.e. indoors) then my dot goes from 6 MOA to ~40 MOA. Not insurmountable but definitely inconvenient. If I go into low light with enough ambient light to easily identify a target then the entire optic window is red. It severely impacts target focus and ability to aim effectively.

The pistol optics I am currently looking at are the AEMS Micro and EPS Core when they come out. If my main concern is having an effective auto brightness which I believe will be solved with a forward facing light sensor, are there any significant advantages to the AEMS micro in this situation? Mostly looking at durability. I have reviewed specs on both but aside from the higher-grade aluminum are there ither factors like electronics protection or quality of the seals that would make the AEMS micro significantly more durable?

For my rifle I am looking at an AEMS Evo because evidently the forward facing sensor was redesigned/improved from the AEMS Pro models. Can anyone confirm this or speak to the auto brightness effectiveness specifically for the AEMS Evo model?

I understand that point shooting is a thing and if I ever had to use my optic in that setting it would probably be at a short distance making the bloom irrelevant. I am not asking for DGU statistics, I just want an optic that has effective auto brightness.

Two Set-Up Questions

Newish account but have been lurking and autistically hyper-researching guns on reddit since 2012.

My current appendix carry set-up is a G19.4 in a tenicor certum 3 with the Aegitec belt (HC knock off). Just an aside I love the belt and it doesn't feel cheap at all. I use a MMT pillow wedge. I had the slide milled by Wager for a 407k because slide overhang makes me nauseous and I really like using a dot. The machining was great. I'm also going to try a light soon to see if it's still comfortable to EDC.

Comfort is very good. I can drive with my gun and barely notice it. Concealability-wise the heel side of the grip prints very slightly in some shirts depending on movement. I can pretty confidently carry in gym shorts and a tank top using a MMT covert belt with slight printing.

My first issue is that I have a pretty noticeable astigmatism that is very sensitive to brightness. If my dot is one or two levels too bright then my 6moa dot blooms into more like a 40 moa star. This is annoying from a ccw perspective because I can't control lighting conditions and if I set the brightness to be visible in regular daylight then the entire window is red in dim conditions. It seems like it mitigates a lot of the red dot advantages even with proper target focus.

I am thinking about trying a dot with auto brightness and am waiting patiently(ish) for the EPS core to come out with the forward-facing sensor. Also planning to get the MRS to try the different reticle versions. Would this give me the greatest versatiliy for a carry pistol dot? I would have manual and auto brightness with 3 reticle optipns to choose from.

Are there any other dots I should be considering? For context red works best for me (better than green or gold) and EOTECHs still look terrible.

Second issue is the above-mentioned slight grip printing. It isn't something that i think is obvious and usually my wife has trouble seeing it even if she knows I'm carrying.

For people that run smaller guns with good holsters is it really that much more comfortable and concealable? I like the glock grip angle so I'd be looking at a 26 or 43x/48. The 19 fits my hand really well and i can draw it noticeably faster with a better grip than a micro 9 like the hellcat. I have also looked at doing a grip chop on the 19 but am hesitant to go with a permanent solution. Why do gen 4 frames have to be so expensive??

Thanks in advance for any advice/perspectives.

TLDR: Looking for a pistol dot with good auto-brightness that isnt $750, and should I revamp my entire carry system to eliminate a small amount of printing?

Putting This Out There for the Other Dads

Recently I had a perspective shift on how my entire marriage and family runs. For context we've been married close to 10 years and have two kids (3 year old girl and infant boy).

My wife used to be a stay at home wife, then mom, and now works part time. She's always been the "organized one." Like a lot of marriages, that translated to her being "in charge" of household stuff. At first it made sense. I was working full time, she was a stay at home wife. Then we had our first child.

As any woman with kids knows the difference in workload between a stay at home wife and a stay at home mother is not even in the same universe. I saw that she was doing more so I started doing more. What I didn't realize was that there was a lot of work she was now doing that I didn't ever think about (aka mental load, invisible work, etc.). I thought I was seeing 100% of the new level of work that we had to do together and doing half of it. I didn't understand why my wife was so frustrated with me. She said she felt unappreciated even though I made an effort to thank her. She certainly never thanked me for working.

In the military we used to use a phrase called "going internal" where things get difficult and you focus on yourself and how hard it is to be you without realizing that everyone is in this together and it could be worse. I think a lot of guys feel like this applies to their wife/partner, but in reality it's both of us. It's a natural human reaction to difficult situations.

In reality, what I was seeing and doing "half" of was less than 50% of what we had to do. So i ended up doing at most 25% while she's doing 75%. The problem is that due to how we were raised she had been conditioned to silently do this and build resentment instead of laying it out for me, and I had been conditioned to never once really think about all of this "invisible work."

Furthermore, because I didn't know about all of this it didn't get adjusted when she started working part time. I have a stressful and demanding job. I see people die so regularly (no longer military) that I don't even know how many it's been at this point. Her job is comparatively low stress and part-time. I still tried to start doing more around the house which equated to maybe 5-10%. So now I'm doing 1/3 of the house duties, feeling like I'm going above and beyond, while she silently struggles.

The other day she mentioned being overwhelmed with all of the things we had going on. Almost in tears. I was concerned for her but silently realized that I didn't have the faintest idea of what we had going on. This is a running joke with us, but after finally noticing the effect it was having on her I started doing more research into this mental load and had the shocking perspective shift that I'm here trying to share with as many husbands/dads as I can.

I put some links below that I found the most helpful and eye-opening. Some of them are from feminist places but understand this post is not about feminism vs the patriarchy and all that. I'm not even a feminist or a men's rights advocate (? Don't know the word). I have never before intentionally read anything to do with the Huffington Post. This is about trying to share something with other dads and husbands that I think has quietly been deeply affecting my marriage.

Please, for your sake, just read at least the first one and keep an open mind. It's hard to admit that you may not have been doing as much as you thought, but it's the only way forward.
