Brought home my first day gecko and now I'm obsessed, show off yours!

I went to a reptile expo and got my very first day gecko (the tiniest gold dust ever) from a really cool breeder, and learned about 3 new species I'd never heard of while there. I'm very very quickly becoming obsessed with day geckos and want them all! If you have any and want to share, show off a picture of your day geckos and their homes, I'd love to see!

Blocking mesh on a terrarium for higher humidity

Hey all. I'm prepping for a small day gecko species. My area is pretty dry so while I will have an automatic mister, I am worried about the potential for the mesh top of my terrarium to cause it to dry out too fast. I'm gonna start testing the setup without any kind of cover to see how it goes, but in the case that I decide I need to cover it what are you guys using? I'll need something that is safe under the heat lamp and that I can cut into for the UVB bar (or just set up around the bar). I'm thinking acrylic, are there any companies that do custom cutting of acrylic for a reasonable price?

Ants are here, not on purpose. Now what?

It's time again, ants in the invert enclosures. I'm really stuck on how to deal with them, because everything that prevents ants hurts my pet inverts too. I have a tarantula, isopods, roaches, mealworms, and a beetle. And frogs! Two of my roach colonies as well as my isopod colony appears to be ant proof, and the ants seem generally uninterested in my T, mealworms, and beetle. But they are in my third roach colony as well as most likely my frog tank. Plus, all these creatures are housed very very close together

Any ideas? I'm weary of DE because I have guinea pigs with sensitive respiratory systems, and I personally just hate the stuff. Last year I put Vaseline on my table legs which SUCKED but did work so I can do it again this year if I must. I wish I could moat the table legs, but I use a heavy duty hardware shelf and can't move it even an inch

What are y'all wearing to feed baby raptors?

Rehabbers! What do you wear to cover your face/body? My rehab has a tinted face shield and a barber cape thingy but I absolutely hate it, and it's not enough for multiple people to work at once. We also have a paper face mask, but we cant wear glasses with it. Considering looking for more things to add to the collection or even something just for myself, what do you like?

Questions about morphs

Hey all! I would like some mourning geckos, but the main thing holding me back has been that I want to be able to name and identify my geckos, so I've been nervous about the idea of having a few identical ones.

I've been setting up an 18x18x24" terrarium with the idea in my head that I'll get a small day gecko species. I haven't done anything yet that's particularly species specific so it would be easy to switch. I just saw someone post on facebook that they had Hawaiian and yellow belly geckos for sale and I was shocked at how different they looked!

Anyway, I suppose what I am hoping to hear about is how many of you can tell between your geckos (particularly those of you with only a few individuals), how easy it is to find visually distinct ones to buy without a huge hassle in or around California, USA, and if any of y'all have any general tips or thoughts about this. Ofc I know they'd end up having babies, but I'd ensure I'm set up to handle that

I'm still thinking a solitary gecko of another species will probably be best for me, but I'm gonna reconsider my options anyway

I'm a transmasc frog owner, and transitioning has helped me imitate him

I got my first whites tree frog in April of 2025, a nice senior male. I would always try to croak at him, but to get a response I'd have to play a video of other frogs. I started testosterone in October of that same year, and around December I started finding that my voice had dropped enough that I can now make a whites tree frog noise well enough to have a chat with my boy!!! This is very exciting. I have included a video (no actual visuals, just audio)

Making a background, what should I use to fill the gaps?

EDIT: I realized the bottom 5" of this won't need cork as it'll be under substrate so I am now left with a ton of extra cork that I'll just crush up to fill the gaps. Regardless, if anyone has ideas I'll still like to hear them in case I like them better

I'm making my second terrarium background, yay! This is my mockup using the cork I have. I wanted to do all cork because this is for a high humidity gecko so I wanna do it and promote moss growth and maybe even mount some other plants. But, I'm not sure what to fill the gaps with! I have expanding foam and black silicone that I used for my previous tank project, but I didn't love the foam. I'll be using the black silicone to stick the cork on, would it look okay if I just fill the gaps with that? I'm not sure it'll look good. Is there any other material or paint you all can think of that I could add, either before or after adding the cork?

I replaced 2% dairy milk with Ripple brand plant based milk alternative today

I eat kraft macaroni for dinner every night and always use regular old 2% milk and am comfortable with most milk brands. Today, I got all the way through cooking my Kraft three cheese (the shells shape) and opened the fridge to find that someone finished off the 2% without telling me. Ugh! I decided on a whim to try the Ripple that's in there, a plant based milk alternative that I've never tried for anything before. I was terrified and unsure if I'd even eat it or if I'd just melt down and have chips for dinner. But. Guys... I DID IT.

The texture upon mixing the butter, ripple, and cheese powder was a little different and thicker. The smell was slightly sweeter, but hardly noticeable. Once the pasta was mixed in, the texture was the same. I managed to try it and there was a slight difference in taste but it was negligible and I still ate almost my entire regular portion size! I am noticing a mild aftertaste of the regular cheesy flavor that is staying a little longer than usual, but it's fine.

I'm excited about this because it opens up a new door for me! I always want to reduce animal product consumption but there's pretty much no place in my diet where I can do that. Ripple claims to have 50% more calcium and the same amount of protein as dairy milk, which seems to be better than a lot of milk alternatives I see available

PS sorry this lowkey sounds like an ad. It's not. I just don't like the idea of calling it "ripple milk" since it's not milk, and I think it would be rude of me not to include the brand information

Looking for an eco-friendly detergent for very gross laundry

I have guinea pigs (pet tax has been attached to the post) and wash their reusable fleece cage liners once a week. I also work in wildlife rehab so I play with all sorts of disgusting things that I bring home on my clothes every work day. I'm on the hunt for an unscented low-waste powder detergent option (or similar) that would be good to handle the urine and get the job done whilst also reducing or eliminating plastic packaging or having giant bottles that are 90% water and full of dyes. Any recommendations? I hear good things about enzyme cleaners but I'm not very educated on laundry chemistry. Thanks in advance!

I get dysphoric when people talk about me being on hormones

This is really odd for me because I have pretty low dysphoria in most things. I don't have an issue talking about the fact that I'm trans an I don't really intend to ever make it that much of a secret, I enjoy being visibly queer and do not strongly identify with the gender binary despite generally referring to myself as a trans man instead of a non binary label. All the people I speak about in this post are trans too as I primarily socialize with trans people outside of work and family.

I started T in October and am really happy about it. It wasn't a conscious decision really but I ended up not really "announcing" it to anyone despite it being pretty common and the norm to do a bit of tiny celebration about hormone stuff. Ofc people started noticing and so it came up which is completely fine, it didn't bother me at all to have people asking if I started T. However lately my voice has been dropping a ton and I've been growing some pretty nice facial hair, and my friends keep bringing it up as a positive thing but it really bothers me. I can't really point to why. It's not dysphoria about the fact that I'm trans because I don't really have that, and it's definitely not because they are pointing out masculine traits because I am extremely happy about these changes. I also feel similarly when people (both cis and trans) ask my pronouns and I have to state them, despite feeling very secure in my he/him pronouns. It's almost like discussing my gender and gender presentation is what bothers me. I think in the back of my mind I am just not a fan of the concept of gender despite participating in it daily, and I'm non binary despite not preferring the term and preferring "binary" pronouns.

ISO recs for water dish for whites tree frogs

I am getting tired of trying to find dishes do my buddies. I have two adults. For a while I was using a basic plastic one sold for reptiles but it had nasty pockets and sharp corners that started to become impossible to clean properly. I made something in a ceramics class to replace it, but I'm concerned that I may have glazed part of it improperly and there could be exposed ceramic that would be a bacteria magnet.

I'm looking for something roughly 6" wide and 2" deep, that I will fill to around 1.5". I'd like a gentle slope side that's easy to clean, rather than something with a sharp corner that can't be scrubbed easily. Bonus points if it's got a corner, I have a really nice corner shaped flagstone piece and I like to fit the bath on top of it. I've considered commissioning a custom ceramic bowl for them, but that can be $$$

Turning all the way around while asleep

I had a really funny experience this morning... I found myself completely in the wrong direction, with my feet on the pillow!

I sleep on a twin loft bed and every so often (like maybe once or twice a year) I swap the direction my head rests. I don't have any reason, other than it's fun. I am not a person who really moves in my sleep and often find all of my limbs exactly where I left them. But last night, after flipping my direction, I woke up completely reverse in the old direction!

Does anyone know why that sort of thing would happen? Is it possible I sat up last night and then turned while still asleep or just so barely awake that I don't remember? It's not like I could've rolled around to get that way, because it's a twin and I would've had to somehow fold in half or scrunch up to do that. This has happened a few times in my life, but the other times I was extremely small (like, 6) and did toss around a lot during sleep

Show me your small day gecko enclosures!

I'm working on an enclosure for either a neon or a gold dust day gecko, my very first one. I would love to see as much enclosure inspo as I can, especially bioactives! Happy to see anything for these species or really anything that has similar needs, just lmk if there's a difference I should be aware of

How do color/marking labels function?

I'm working on a red fox breeding project and have these two foxes. They are labeled the exact same way
"Melanistic (black): black fur and white tail tip"
But are clearly very different with the kit being piebald. The kit is from two piebald parents (one red and one red-brown)

I also have another fox (last photo), also unrelated to these two, who appears piebald like the kit and is labeled as
"Melanistic (silver): Dark gray fur, black markings, and white tail tip

How do you all personally experience your tinnitus?

I have irregular tinnitus caused by who knows what. In general it's a high pitched ringing sound that seems external, like some machine is making it a few feet away. I think that's the most common thing. However today I was just sitting in silence and got something completely different. It felt like it was coming from inside my head and was a pulsating noise, almost in the pattern of a siren. It was high pitch, but not nearly as high as the regular ringing. It was almost hard to hear, like I didn't notice it at first and then realized it had been happening for a little while. Not like it was muffled, but like my brain just didn't pay attention

Anyway, I guess I'm jus hoping to hear about what exactly you all are experiencing because I've never had this before

Putting the battery in this silly thermometer

I have this zoomed thermometer and humidity gauge that I just cannot get the battery into! Any ideas? I have like three of these and have never needed more than a firm push. It is the battery that came with it so definitely not the wrong one

I've been seeking geckopia's ads for it lately and it looks nice and fun to build with because I really didn't enjoy building with spray foam and trying a background substrate mix because it left bare patches and was super time consuming. Anyone have experience? Is it really all it's cracked up to be? I pls to get a gold dust day gecko

Hello! I am considering getting a gold dust day gecko and am thinking about plant layout. Have any of you put moss poles for plants like pothos or monstera adansonii? Share some photos if so, I'd love to see and hear about how it's going!
