Congratulations, you have won the lottery. Do you pick rich and anonymous or even richer but people will know who you are?

Your local government comes out with a new lottery. If you win, you can pick one of 2 prizes.

Option 1. You win $5 million (after taxes). You can choose to claim it like option 2 or you can do it through a trust so people will know someone won but will have no idea it is you.

Option 2. You win $20 million (after taxes). To claim the prize, they will hold a public interview with all the local media stations in attendance. You will be interviewed. Reporters will ask questions. Everyone will know who you are. Winner is Barney Stinson. From X town but lives in Y.

I have polite coworkers. It is really nice.

One minor pet peeve of mine, and maybe yours too, is the blind Teams call. My company is mostly in office or hybrid. There are a handful fully remote due to our roles.

I have a work cell. No one ever calls it from the company. It is always Teams. Even though everyone in the office has a desk phone.

Anyways, 9 out of 10 times, other than my manager, will actually message me, "Do you have time for a call?" It is always so refreshing. When I need to call a coworker, I always ask first since most don't have their headsets on in the office.

Yay!

Very minor ethical dilemma.

Not sure which tag to use.

Anyways, I am fully remote. I work in a non-critical role. Well established in my career.

I just found out that my contractor can install the windows on my house next Tuesday. Yay! My other half is on vacation.

I want to take the day off. Options are a personal day (designed for last minute type things or an extra vacation day) or a sick day. Vacation/personal doesn't roll over.

Part of me says to do the correct thing and use a personal day. It just means that I wouldn't be able to use it later this year. The other part says use the sick day since I never use them in general since even if I am a little sick, I still work since I can be 50% and do my job.

Do I go the ethical route and use the personal day? Do I go the sick day route? The only reason I am leaning towards the sick day is if, for some reason, they can't finish in one day, I could be sick the next day as well.

I guess we aren't a real city?

I am at a conference at Copley. So I am sitting outside killing time. Some random person just walked up to me and asked, "Are there any bars open?" It is 8:50am.

Gestures to the Fairmont and says, "They aren't open and neither is this one (gestures to the Westin)". I shrug and say I don't think so. He then says, "I thought Boston was a real city." And walks away.

Was a reasonably dressed adult.

Should I go to the cheesecake factory and get cheesecake?

I am staying in a hotel for work. There is a cheesecake factory maybe 1 block away.

Do I need cheesecake? No. Do I like cheesecake? Yes. Will work pay for it? Also yes.

I just saved my company $200 accidentally.

This is sort of one of those dumb random things.

Have a conference on Thursday. Booked a refundable hotel room for $500 including taxes/fees. Was talking with a coworker about it and brought up the website for the conference. Clicked on the stay here hotel link. Saw that the current rate was $300. So I opened up my reservation and since it was still within the cancelation period, it allowed me to modify it to the new rate.

I have never tried this before since 90+% of my travel is work related and it's not my money.

This may be unpopular but I HATE working from anywhere but my home office.

I know a lot of you do coffee shops, libraries or whatever but I hate doing it.

I have to get service for my work car. So working from just my laptop vs laptop and dual screens. It is such a pain in the ass. Literally everything I do, short of emails, requires multiple things so constantly bouncing between them. Not to mention the uncomfortable seat. My work does require me to spend time outside the house but normally I just use my phone for emails and take care of the bigger stuff once I get back home.

At least the have free coffee.

Low stakes debate between my wife and I, slop sink in basement or outside with hose?

So here's the deal. I married, knowing full well, she is a crazy cat lady. Now, many years later, I am in charge of the litter boxes.

It was time to empty and wash them. Slop sink is in the basement, air conditioned but a tight space between the washer and other stuff. Outside is driveway with the hose but it is 85+ and sunny.

She said use the slop sink. I said the hose is better. Her argument, comfort. My argument, more space and not worried about making a mess.

Total compensation vs just salary.

Every time I see a post asking "Which job should I pick?" Or "Should I change?" Etc, they usually just talk salary vs total compensation.

I bring this up as my wife and I were just talking about health insurance. We live in a HCOL state where insurance is also very high.

My company is based in a different state. We use their health insurance. It is a very large company, so the rates are good and I chose the best plan. My wife works for a company based in this state. She got her paperwork for insurance so we decided to compare rates. Looked at similar coverage and they use the same insurance company.

Her insurance is nearly $1,000 more a month than mine. To use hers it was something close to $11,000 more a year for very similar coverage.

When I joined this company, when we were at the stage of discussing benefits, they told me the numbers. My previous company was also somewhat reasonable but almost everything was in the extended network since it was a much smaller company vs this one where everything is in network.

Obviously, if you are young/no family, this isn't a big deal but for us with families/old (er), this really plays a role if I look for a new job.

Also, isn't the cheeto in charge supposed to roll out a wonderful new version of Obama care, like 10 years ago or is he still formulating a plan?

Today it hit me how different things are from 3ish years ago.

Last company, I was a Regional Manager that had 2 territories, 26 states. Currently similar role but cover just New England (minus CT because fuck them haha).

I was watching TV this afternoon, chatting with the wife and talking about my schedule this week. Tomorrow, Monday, I have to head to the airport. Unlike my previous job where I would be flying out, this time I am picking up a coworker to do some joint sales calls for a few days.

Instead of packing, trip planning, logistics etc (as anyone who travels knows), I am just putting a few demos in the car and looking up a coffee shop to kill time between when they land and our 1st appointment.

I make more money, have less worries, better company and very recognized name and no early morning drives into the airport. Life is pretty good.

Ok, back to killing time before getting take out for dinner.

Have an ethics question for the group or a what would you do?

My company participates in a big trade show in my area yearly. I work in sales and work remote in this territory. Company is in a few states away. We tend to give away prizes to people who sign up and we draw names.

This year we did $350 worth of gift certificates to a fancy local restaurant ($200, $100, $50). We picked names. I emailed the winners. No one got back to me.

While cleaning my desk, I found the gift certificates. The show was 8 months ago.

What should I do? Take the wife out to a fancy dinner? Let my boss know and ask? Ignore them for another few months and then wife/boss?
