The Morningstar podcast - Bill Bengen interview

Link: https://www.morningstar.com/podcasts/the-long-view/82cad8bd-5ba7-471f-a594-73e27f276e82

Bill Bengen came up with the 4% rule back in '94. Here he is interviewed by Christine Benz and they cover a wide range of topics mostly about portfolio withdrawal rates but also portfolio construction and other related topics.

At the 25 minute mark, when addressing asset allocation, he states the following: "...My research indicates that In the accumulation phase up to 5 years of the retirement date, investors are best served by holding 100% in stocks at all times and just ride the ups and downs because it'll compound very nicely over long periods of time."

Is this what you recommend for clients? Curious what you think.

I suggest people listen to the entire episode as there is some additional context that may provide clarity on what Bengen is saying but the quote, I feel, is self contained.

Shards of Earth desperately needs an art book.

Desperately. I’m googling like crazy just to get an idea of what The Unspeakable Aklu looks like but really, all of it needs visuals.

I’m this far away from having AI mock something up so I can visualize it better.

Loving the book btw. Rollo is my favorite so far.

I'm generally buy my cars and keep them for about 5-7 years until the maintenace becomes an issue. With this being an EV I'm actually on the fence. Thoughts?

What’s life like after a large RIA buys your book?

I’m considering an offer to merge with a big RIA. I intend to keep working for a bit. What is it like afterwards? What do you know now that you wish you knew before?

Feel free to DM me if you prefer. Thanks!

Buy or lease a car? What do you tell your clients?

I know the answer to this and I know a car is not an "investment" but no other flair seemed to work. I want to hear your take.

and are you "happy" with it? This is obviously only for those of you who carry it. I know it's expensive and I'm guessing less than 10% of homeowners bother.

I can't seem to find my most recent statement but I think it's about $3300/yr. I believe the CA Fair Plan is much less?
