How do you make a logline visual and know when it’s good?

How do you make a logline visual in the reader’s mind?

I’m a beginner screenwriter, and I’m trying to improve my loglines.

I want to know how you write a logline so that when someone reads it, they can immediately imagine the story, situation, or main conflict in their mind.

Are there any techniques you use to make a logline more visual and engaging without making it too long?

I’d also be happy to know how you decide that a logline is good or “perfect.” What things do you look for when judging your own logline?

I’d be really happy to learn how other writers approach this.

Should I Continue This Collaboration or Move On?

Someone DM’d me and said that they wanted to make a short story and asked if I would like to join them. I’m also new, so I said yes.

Now the problem is that I don’t like the ideas they give, and they don’t like the ideas I give. My ideas are usually Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Adventure, and Action, while their ideas are more like Superhero-type stories.

I suggested that we should keep the story entirely in a Fantasy World, but they are not willing to do that. I also feel like I’m writing most of the scenes, while they are not contributing much.

When I ask them if they have any ideas, they give very basic ideas, like: the hero is in college, he gets powers one day, then he learns to control those powers, and The End.

Now I don’t understand what I should do. I don’t want to ruin the collaboration for no reason, but because of this, I’m not able to work on my own screenplay either.

Should I first talk to them clearly and decide the work and responsibilities for both of us? Or if our ideas and writing styles don’t match, would it be better to leave the collaboration and find another writer?

If you have any experience or advice about a situation like this, please let me know.

How Do You Turn a Scene in Your Head Into Writing?

How do you write a scene that you can clearly see in your head?

Sometimes I can clearly imagine a scene in my head — the characters, their movements, the location, and even how the scene should feel.

But when I try to write it down, I struggle to make the reader see the same thing that I’m seeing in my head.

So I wanted to ask other writers:

How do you turn the scene in your head into writing?

How do you describe the scene, characters, actions, and emotions so that the reader can visualize it without over-explaining?

I’d love to hear how you guys approach this, especially from beginners and professional screenwriters.

Looking for a Resource with Movie Loglines and Themes

Is there any website or resource where I can find old and new movies with their original loglines and themes?

I’m learning screenwriting and I want to study movies by looking at their logline and theme together.

For example:

  • Movie: The Shawshank Redemption
  • Original logline: ?
  • Theme: ?

I’m looking for a reliable source where I can find this kind of information for many different movies. I’m especially looking for the original or officially published loglines, if available.

Any recommendations?

What Do You Think About Combining Fantasy and Sci-Fi?

I’m interested in writing a story that combines fantasy and sci-fi in the same movie.

How do you balance the two genres without making the world feel confusing? For example, having magic, mythical creatures, and fantasy worlds alongside spaceships, futuristic technology, and alien civilizations.

What are some movies or screenplays that you think successfully combine fantasy and sci-fi?

What do you think about this kind of combination? Do you think it can work well? And if you’re currently writing a screenplay or making a movie that combines fantasy and sci-fi, I’d definitely love to hear about it.

Connecting With Writers & Directors Without Industry Connections

How do you connect with writers and directors when you don’t have any film industry connections?

I’m curious how people who live far away from major film or filmmaking communities build connections with other writers, directors, and filmmakers.

If you don’t have friends or contacts in the film industry, what has worked for you?

Do you use Reddit, Discord, online writing groups, film communities, or something else?

I’d especially like to hear from people who started with no connections and gradually built a network.

Writers, What’s Something You Wish You Knew When You Started?

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm still pretty new to writing, and I've been curious about what more experienced writers have learned along the way.

What’s something about writing that you only understood after actually writing for a while?

For example:

- Is there something you wish you knew when you first started?

- What was the biggest mistake you made as a beginner?

- What helped you improve the most?

- How do you deal with the difficult parts of writing a first draft?

- How do you know when an idea is worth turning into a full story?

- Do you plan everything before writing, or discover the story as you go?

- How do you stay motivated to finish a long story or screenplay?

- And for screenwriters specifically, what’s something beginners often misunderstand about screenwriting?

I'd love to hear your personal experiences and lessons. 🙂

Question About Royal Titles for a Fantasy Story

I have a question about royal titles in a fantasy story.

Suppose there is a royal family/clan called the Vlahović Dynasty. Several members of the family rule different kingdoms. For example, one is a King, another is a Queen, and another is a King of a different kingdom.

However, they are all part of the same Vlahović bloodline, and there is one older King who is the supreme ruler above all of them.

If a new High King takes the throne while the old Supreme King is still alive, what would be the best titles to use to clearly distinguish them?

For example:
HIGH KING XYZ — the new supreme ruler
SUPREME KING XYZ — the former/older ruler

Or would Elder King, Former High King, or another title be more appropriate?

Looking for Feedback on Act 1 of My First Screenplay

Hey everyone!

I’m working on my first screenplay, and I’d love to get some honest feedback on Act 1.

This is my first draft, so it’s definitely not perfect, and the screenplay isn’t complete yet. I’m currently working on Act 2, but I’d like to get some feedback on Act 1 before I continue too far.

You don’t need to give any technical screenwriting feedback. I’d mainly love to know what you think as a normal reader.

If you have some free time, I’d especially like to know:

  1. Was the story easy to understand?
  2. Did it feel boring at any point?
  3. Which scene did you find most interesting?
  4. Which character did you like or dislike?
  5. Was anything confusing?
  6. Did the dialogue feel natural?

There’s absolutely no pressure or rush. Only read it if you’re interested and have the time.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read it! 🙏

The best way to translate a screenplay

Hey everyone,

Hope its okay to post this here. I’m a screenwriter and director from Denmark, and one of the most frustrating parts of working internationally has always been translation.

Whenever I wanted to send a screenplay to a distributor, producer or potential partner in Germany, France, the UK, the US, etc., I basically had two options:

Pay around $1,000+ for a professional translation, or send something that didn’t really represent the writing properly.

And when you’re developing several projects, that becomes expensive very quickly. Sometimes you just want to know: Is this producer interested enough for me to take the next step?

So I built StoryDPT.com specifically around this problem.

You upload your screenplay, choose the target language, and it translates the script while preserving screenplay formatting, character names, scene headings, dialogue structure, etc.

The biggest change for me personally is that I can now pitch projects much more freely. Instead of thinking, “Is this contact worth spending $1,000 on a translation?”.

I thought this might be particularly useful for writers here, because there are so many great Indian screenwriters writing in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and other languages who may want to get their work in front of producers, agents, festivals or collaborators internationally.

The site is storydpt.com.

I built it first because I needed it myself, so I’d genuinely love feedback from other screenwriters.

New Screenwriter Interested in Learning About Film Festivals

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a new screenwriter and currently learning screenwriting. As part of my course, I’m trying to learn more about the film festival world and the experiences of filmmakers who participate in festivals.

I’d especially love to hear from filmmakers, writers, directors, producers, or festival professionals about their journey and experiences with film festivals, particularly independent film festivals.

I’m not looking for anyone to read my screenplay. I’m currently working on it and it isn’t finished yet. I’m simply interested in learning from people who have experience with filmmaking and film festivals.

If you’ve participated in film festivals or work in the festival/independent film community and would be open to a short conversation, I’d be very happy to connect and hear about your experience.

I’m new to the industry and just starting to build my network, so I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences you’re willing to share. 🙏

New Screenwriter Looking to Connect with 3 Film Industry Professionals

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a new screenwriter and currently learning screenwriting. As part of an assignment for my course, I need to connect with 3 professionals from the film or entertainment industry and have a conversation with them.

I’d love to connect with writers, directors, filmmakers, producers, actors, or anyone working in the film industry. I’m not looking for a job or asking for work. I simply want to connect, learn from your experience, and hear about your journey in the film industry.

I’m not looking for anyone to read my screenplay. I’m currently working on it, and it isn’t finished yet. I just want to connect with people in the industry, have a conversation, and learn from their experiences.

If you work in the film industry and would be open to having a short conversation with a new screenwriter, please feel free to comment or DM me. I’d really appreciate it. 🙏

Master Thread — Find a Writers Group for the 15-Week (delusional) Screenwriting Course

Hey everyone,

Welcome to the Master Thread for finding writers groups for Nathan Graham Davis's “(delusional)” 15-week screenwriting course.

The course is completely free and is available on YouTube. It is designed primarily for beginners and aims to take you from learning the fundamentals all the way to writing the first draft of a feature screenplay.

The course is challenging and requires real commitment. The assignments can take around 5–10 hours per week, so having a small group of writers can help with feedback, accountability, motivation, and staying on track.

What you'll work toward

By the end of the 15 weeks, you will have worked toward:

  • Forming a writers group
  • Reading and analyzing 12 screenplays
  • Writing a short screenplay
  • Creating 10 feature-film concepts
  • Starting to build your writing network
  • Writing a one-page summary
  • Creating a feature screenplay outline
  • Revising your outline
  • Writing the first draft of a feature screenplay

The course isn't meant to teach you absolutely everything about screenwriting. Instead, it is designed as a jumpstart to help you develop a writing habit, practice the craft, connect with other writers, and actually finish a first draft.

Who can join?

Everyone is welcome.

You don't have to be from India.

Writers from India and anywhere else in the world can use this thread to find people to go through the course with them.

Whether you're:

  • A complete beginner
  • Writing your first screenplay
  • An experienced writer
  • Interested in film or television
  • A filmmaker who wants to improve their writing
  • Someone looking for accountability

—you are welcome here.

How to use this Master Thread

To avoid filling the subreddit with dozens of separate posts looking for groups, please use this thread to connect with other writers.

1. Check the recent comments first

Before creating a new comment, look through the latest comments to see whether another writer is already forming a group that you can join.

2. If you can't find a suitable group, make a comment

Tell everyone that you're looking for a group.

Please include useful information such as:

  • How many writers you're looking for
  • Your experience level
  • Genres you are interested in
  • Your time zone
  • When you would like to meet
  • How you want to communicate (Discord, WhatsApp, Reddit, Zoom, etc.)
  • How committed you are to completing the 15 weeks

For example:

Looking for: 4–6 writers
Experience: Beginner
Genres: Sci-fi, fantasy, thriller
Location: India / Worldwide
Meetings: Once a week
Goal: Complete all 15 weeks and write a feature first draft

3. Delete your comment after finding your group

Please delete your comment once you've found enough people.

This will keep the Master Thread clean and make it easier for new writers to find active groups.

About the Course

“(delusional)” is a free 15-week screenwriting course created by working screenwriter Nathan Graham Davis.

The entire course is available online, and the goal is not simply to watch videos—it is to write.

The course combines lessons, assignments, screenplay analysis, concept development, outlining, networking, and eventually writing a complete first draft.

The creator's philosophy is simple: screenwriting is difficult and highly competitive, so success requires serious practice, dedication, and persistence. The course is intended as a way of giving back to writers who are willing to put in that work.

Why have a Writers Group?

A writers group can help you:

  • Stay accountable
  • Discuss weekly assignments
  • Share ideas
  • Give constructive feedback
  • Receive feedback on your own work
  • Get through writer's block
  • Stay motivated
  • Meet other writers
  • Build a creative network

You don't have to be at the same experience level as everyone else. The important thing is that everyone is willing to write, participate, give useful feedback, and help each other improve.

About r/IndianWritersGroups

This subreddit isn't only for this course.

r/IndianWritersGroups is a community for writers, screenwriters, filmmakers, and creators who want to connect, collaborate, share ideas, exchange feedback, and improve their craft.

You can use this community to find writers for:

  • Screenwriting
  • Short films

  • Web series
  • Story development
  • Filmmaking
  • Creative collaboration
  • Feedback groups
