I hated our Planet Select so a friend helped me redesign it. Is it too complicated?

Hello! I'm working on a game with pinball-like mechanics where you move around levels on different planets collecting ore. In my game, gravity directly affects the momentum.

I'm trying to find a good balance for the Planet Select screen and keep it looking sci-fi and futuristic but also clean and simple (it's not a strategy or a space simulator game, so I see no need to overcomplicate things)

I had a designer friend help me make some changes to improve the Planet Select, and I've attached the result along with the current Level Select screen for contrast.

I would really love to hear your thoughts and any advice on the layout and readability of the modal! Do note this is intended for Desktop, I assume that for mobile we would inevitably need to increase the size of the modal. 🙂

Hey everyone! We’ve been trying to find the sweet spot between a cool sci-fi aesthetic and clean simplicity.

I really like how the Level Select turned out, but the Planet Select was giving me headaches, so a friend stepped in to help overhaul it. My biggest fear with the UI is making it look like a 90s vision of a futuristic mess.

Does the modal feel intuitive, or is there too much going on?

We designed this level to reward players who actually pay attention.

I wanted to introduce a hidden path mechanic in my game, so we built this level as a test and even had T369 chip in with a hint just in case you didn't spot it! 😉

The obvious route is to fly all the way around, but if you're paying close attention, you'll spot something "off" and curiosity will get the best of you!

Would you prefer secret paths or full predictability? Would love to hear your thoughts! 😀

Didn't want to animate walking in the tutorial, so T369 had to kick the player to keep moving.

We’ve since added proper walk cycles and more cutscenes, but we loved the physical comedy of this mechanic so much that we just had to keep it in. Now you know who's really in charge here! 😎

Does anyone know what this flower species is? Asking for an edible friend. 🌸

We originally planned a standard, dramatic boss fight, but when we realized how beautiful the flower’s natural habitat could be, we couldn't resist! The entire battle takes place deep inside it, in a darker, claustrophobic and crowded environment.

If you've ever wondered what a high-stakes fight inside a giant flower would look like, stay tuned for our demo. In the meantime, enjoy this little dance! 😂

Our game’s first major boss: a giant boastful slime named Tartarin.

He’s twice your size and loves to brag, but there’s a catch: he’s completely immune to direct attacks. To damage him, you have to hit his tentacles.

Is it really a totalitarian regime if the dictator doesn't have an unhinged obsession with aesthetic mass?

A Whale's Ballad (HuC6280)

This melody started with me trying to figure out the slow-burn rhythm and flow of 2000s R&B, but the meat of it was a light nod to A'Studio's Нелюбимая.

I’ve always admired the brilliance of that song - there’s something timeless in how the intricate melody and the lyrics capture that quiet, tender suffering of unrequited love. 🙂

I was going for a specific kind of nostalgia with this one - moody, 80s atmospheric anime feel. I wanted to see if I could give the bass some character while keeping the pads sleek and lingering.

Like everything else I did using DefleMask, it's done on the PC Engine, and I used sampled drums to be closer to that retrofuturistic aesthetic. I hope it will inspire you to also experiment with this bento box of 8/16-bit goodness. 😊

(Sorry for the file name... I was just hungry when I saved it)

Blunders was an upcoming RPG for the Super CD-ROM² advertised by its publisher IGS in their 1992 catalog. It was featured alongside other titles in development, such as Dansou Toshi: Stray Road - another cyberpunk RPG which also never saw the light of day. Blunders also got a dedicated preview in the May 1992 issue of PC Engine Fan.

Despite appearing to be quite far along in development, the project was canceled and never saw a release. Interestingly, my search efforts have uncovered a voice actress who listed Blunders in her professional portfolio, suggesting that voice recording, and likely a significant portion of the game’s programming, was completed.

It would have been fascinating to see how this played out compared to Phantasy Star. Hopefully, a prototype or a development build will surface online one day, giving us a taste of that gameplay.
