What is something that you can’t remember where/how you obtained it?

Yesterday a friend texted me and asked if I’d like to go out to dinner. She then said her roses were blooming and asked if she could bring some to me when she picked me up.

She arrived with three perfect, slightly opened, peach-yellow roses. I pulled out a vase, put the roses in them and placed it on the window sill over the kitchen sink. She said she liked the vase and asked me where I got it. I laughed that I couldn’t remember.

It’s a hefty, ribbed, crystal carafe; probably the capacity of a half-liter carafe but taller and narrower. I use it frequently for fresh flowers and bought it for that purpose. I think it’s a known crystal brand, but not super high end, although there are no markings etched on it. I remember thinking at the time I bought it that it was too formal for me. I remember it being in my home I moved from 20+ years ago. Today, it looks great on the window sill in my kitchen because the sunlight reflects off of the faceted ribs. I think I purchased it at one of those off-priced stores like TJ Maxx. And I know it wasn’t a gift.

We laughed that I could remember where/how I obtained things 30, 40 years ago, how I am always really good at remembering details like this, but had no clue how I obtained this carafe/vase.

What is something that you have no idea where or how you obtained it?

Marcato Cookie Press — how does it perform?

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic and want to make Spritz cookies.

The Mirro cookie press from childhood is long gone.

I’ve heard it’s best to use a press with a metal tube. Most of the new ones are plastic.

Has anyone tried the Marcato cookie press?

Questions about Y DNA results — need beginners’ level explanations

For some reason, while I can dive into most topics, reading about Y DNA is like my mind walking through a maze.

Can someone explain this to me on the sixth grade level?

In FamilyTreeDNA surname projects, how are the groupings within a particular surname created? What is the common element that makes them like each other vs the other groups with the same surname?

(All of the kits I’m referring to have taken Big Y-700. I am not one of the kit owners.)

Within a grouping, why are there several haplogroups? Some kits within the group have the same haplogroup, some have a haplogroup not shared with the others. What does this suggest?

All kits within the group share a common SNP, believed to have originated by a common ancestor nine generations back. Two of the kits have a paper trail ten generations back, ie, to the common ancestor’s father. (Both ninth and tenth are in the 1600s, in US. There is no paper trail beyond the tenth generation ancestor.) Several kits have brick walls five or six generations back — ie, no paper trail to nine and ten generations back but the SNP ties them together. This is helpful because we have a paper trail from tenth to ninth to eighth (generations back, moving to present). Working with the paper trails moving to present and the paper trails for the brick walls moving back helps us see the gaps “in the map” and therefore develop potential hypotheses, although we may never know the defined lines that connect them. Do I understand this correctly?

There is a kit that is an outlier. This kit has its own haplogroup, not shared with the others. The kit has a paper trail link of two generations that occurred prior to and perhaps in parallel to the tenth generation ancestor (specific dates are questionable), and is in England. However, it is a different surname. No one knows when either surname may have changed — the one in England and that crossed the pond is one surname; the one of the tenth generation ancestor in 1600s US is another surname. A male of the outlier’s surname has not been identified crossing to the US — it appears the female/wife ancestor and children crossed alone. What does the shared SNP with generation nine suggest in this case?

There is documentation of other sons of the tenth generation ancestor, ie, brothers of the ninth generation ancestor from whom the shared SNP is believed to have originated. Although there are living males who descend from the other sons it does not appear any have taken a Y DNA test. What might their results tell us that the current kits’ results do not? Said another way, how might Y DNA tests of those male descendants help?

Obviously, some of my inability to wrap my head around this is my lack of understanding of haplogroups and SNPs. As stated above, for some reason it is not clicking with me. If anyone can suggest a quick read that simplifies the two, I would appreciate the recommendation.

Thanks for your help!

I set up my new MacBook Air by transferring everything from my MacBook Pro via Time Machine. The MacBook Pro was set up with two users, eg, Joe 1 and Joe 2. This setup and corresponding files transferred over to the new MacBook Air.

When I tried to open Excel and Word files on the new MacBook Air signed in as Joe 1, I received a message that Office 2019 was no longer supported and I needed to upgrade the software. This was odd because the files opened on the MacBook Pro AND the Excel, Word and PowerPoint on the MacBook Pro were 2021, not 2019.

I decided to go ahead and purchase Microsoft Home and Office 2024 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to keep the software updated (not 365).

I downloaded the software and activated it.

The first thing I noticed was that Word and PowerPoint were duplicated in Applications (both 2024). Excel was not duplicated. I deleted one version of Word and one version of PowerPoint.

Signed in as Joe 1, I checked various Excel, Word and PowerPoint files. they all opened and looked normal.

I then changed users to Joe 2. Excel, Word and PowerPoint files will NOT open. (Spinning wheel and use of force quit) However, the three 2024 applications open up.

I read in a couple of places that I needed to delete com.microsoft.officeprefs.plist file. That file does not exist in the library.

Why are the files associated with the second user (same machine) not working?

How can I correct this?

I just transferred everything from my MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Air.

The font in every window is small. Looks like 8pt font. For example, tabs in Safari, the menu bar, when I open Word (Document 1, Home, Insert, Design, Layout, etc).

I went into settings > Accessibility > Display > Text > Menu Bar Size = Large... Text Size > Custom > increased from default to 42pt.

Everything is still small. Side by side comparison with the MBP and the difference is noticeable -- both 15" screens.

I was able to successfully change the size of the icons in the dock.

How do I adjust this?

Thanks for your help.

This is the link to the instructions I followed:

For example, and, of course, speaking for a friend:

#1 — Totally chill. Limited barking. Cuddle monster. Quiet and can entertain self when Daddy is working, doing chores, etc. Observes everything from across the room; big eyes don’t miss a beat. Loves to play fetch at the park. Can be trusted off leash; never ventures far; comes when called. Eats leisurely and only amount wanted. Does not like to have picture taken.

#2 — Endless energy, wound up all the time. Barks when wants attention. Barks when not being looked at. Barks when not content with the current situation, whatever that may be. Affection equals play. Can’t entertain self; watches Daddy’s every move; follows Daddy everywhere; no sense of privacy. Loves to be outside, sniffing and tasting everything. Will not play fetch — chases object, sniffs it, continues on to something else. Cannot be trusted off leash; would be a mile away in a flash; doesn’t respond to name when called. Eats like the world is ending tomorrow and acts like never fed enough. Is a total ham in front of the camera.

Sometimes this friend wonders if managing #1 and #2 is more challenging than managing two #2’s would be because #1 and #2 are so different.

(They are 5 and 6. #2 is older.)
