'Yokoso Scooby-Doo!' Series Set At Tubi; Matthew Lillard Returning

Just a little Scream Cast news...

He's baaaaccckkk!... The Lillard is Shaggy again and I can't wait... I'm gonna have to stop insulting Tubi originals because I'm already in love with this show...

Scoob and Shaggy head off to Japan unleash some monsters and all hell breaks loose.

I just get very happy when Lillard returns to the world of the spooky.

Is God Is... a wild bloody ride

Honestly, I was turned off by the title and poster but I went anyway.

I didn't really know what to expect. But it's very good. I didn't think horror when heading in but did when it was over.

An arthouse/revenge/funny/stylish/heightened/viscous thriller with some definite blood splattering horror. Not scares but more violent.

Sort of like a much smaller kill bill. Exaggerated reality in a way but also feels too real about the horrors of rage.

Based on a play but feels alive and not contained by where it came from.

Anyone else catch this?

RIP Donald Gibb... He was an 80s movie icon for "Neeeeerds", but also dipped his toe in horror with his comedic performance as Larry the Wolfman in Transylvania 6-5000

Donald Gibb has passed away. He was iconic for so many people who love 80's movies. His most famous role was as Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds and he came back for a few sequels.

He also starred in the raunchy HBO comedy 1st & Ten for 6 seasons... the one where Delta Burke gets a football team from a divorce after she finds her husband in bed with one of his players.

But to me he's Larry the wolf man from Transylvania 6-5000... if you're not familiar with this underliked classic... it's a goofy comedy where Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley Jr head off to Transylvania working for a tabloid to look for Frankenstein. They find a town with monsters like the mummy, a sexy vampire and Larry the werewolf. But they all end up having logical explanations of why they exist.

Larry had hypertrichosis... excessive hair growth, also called “werewolf syndrome.”

Donald is under makeup the whole time. But that voice still comes through.

"I started growing hair... it grew it grew, it wouldn't stop growing."

After seeing the result of the "mad doctor's" electrolysis on his stomach hair, he lifts his shirt to the torch-bearing crowd to show the patch of hairless skin "I can go to the beach now."

When his mom apologizes for telling everyone he's a werewolf they hug "Ma you stink."

He was very funny, had a great voice and delivery... I'm sad that he's gone.

Neglected... a mini A-list review (you've been warned)

Listen... I admire when anyone can get a film made. It's tough. So kudos for getting Neglected made.

Here are the high or low lights:

  • This is one of those blink and you'll miss it, tiny releases. It makes Vertical look like a studio.
  • A lot of middle aged white guys that all look alike.
  • Josh Duhamel does his best. A cop desperate to solve clues from a serial killer to save his teen (23) son's life. Sounds good, right?
  • Everyone else is kind of playing catch up to him.
  • This feels like a low-budget Law & Order-style TV procedural. It's absolutely shot like one. Acted like one. Lots of close-ups. The music. It all screams TV.
  • Speaking of that no nudity, no cursing, next to no blood... a few minor icky moments. Again... TV-MA (maybe)
  • I'm convinced this was originally conceived as a TV pilot... the kind that a lower-level CBS would have. Is there a lower-level CBS? Maybe a Tubi original procedural.
  • There's so many places for MST3K-style jokes I couldn't keep track...
    • Why does this tiny town have a media presence like a small city?
    • When there's no actual case going on, why are all the background cops running around like they're trying to solve something?
    • Why does Josh tell his friend he's leaving and not to tell anyone, then leaves literally next to a press conference with the mayor?
    • Why doesn't the serial killer just tell Josh what's up instead of playing this game?
    • Why is the game so easy? Literally Josh just goes from location to location that's been spelled out.
    • How does this kid killer know everything that's happening? The writer treats him like he's Hannibal Lecter-level brilliant, but he's just an annoying 20-year-old.
    • ADDED: I forgot but someone here reminded me... this guy Josh is a retiring cop and he recoils in terror when he sees a cut off small body part or body like he's a teenager in a slasher movie. Hilarious.
  • Then the movie ends... but it doesn't. It keeps going like the last few minutes of a TV procedural (see previous note).
  • There's a slight reveal in this that's so insane and makes so little sense, but I don't want to spoil things. If I did, it would be five more notations of how dumb it is. But it would also have been a better movie if it was just about that insane reveal.

Having said all that... if you find this on Tubi or something, you might like it while you look at your phone.

A-list has made it possible to see a lot of smaller movies that I otherwise would have missed. I'm really looking forward to the new comedy 'Driver's Ed' this weekend.

I'm sure this will be juvenile and childish humor and hated by critics... and I can't wait lol. It's from Bobby Farrelly of the Farrelly Brothers.

I love that Devil Wears Parada 2 opened huge this weekend and maybe this and Scary Movie will encourage studios to release comedies again.

But sadly most comedies now released are small indie films released on a small number of screens... and I feel like a lot of us AMC A-Listers are the ones that fuel these.

This is coming out through Vertical and it's right up my alley. I loved the mid 00s era of Raunchy teen comedies. Road Trip. Euro Trip. American Pie movies.

And this sounds just like those... with a much smaller budget.

"A group of teens who steal their school's driver's ed car to go on a road trip to help a high school senior track down his college-freshman girlfriend and win her back."

And it has Kumail Nanjiani and Molly Shannon

No new "big movie" opening this weekend. Seems weird since it's the second weekend of "summer season"

This weekend was originally ment to be the opening of Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day. Maybe that's why? But Universal shifted the date to June 12th fifteen months ago.

Colleges and high schools havent let out yet... maybe that's part of it?

I know these dates get plugged in years before but I'm surprised no one swooped in and took this weekend.

The boxoffice has been on a roll and I feel like movie-going feeds on itself and the more big weekends there are, the more people get into the routine and fun of it.

Though it'll be good for the top 3 I guess... Prada, Michael, Mortal.

Mortal Kombat II was great. It nails it.

Saw this on IMAX and looked fantastic. It's exactly what a Mortal Kombat movie should be. It gets an A.

It felt like the old days... like a 90s big fun time but for today.

Not A as in Oscar winner. A as in it's 100 percent what it should be. Fun, action packed, fighting fighting and fighting. Just gets it all right.

Karl Urban is hilarious. The whole cast is great.

If it's not your thing yeah don't go but if it is... it's awesome. IMO and the 4 friends I went with. All amc a-listers. Actually one wasn't and he paid so much for it. And he even liked it.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Phoebe Dynevor Horror 'Pendulum' Gets US Deal (Vertical)

Keep a lookout for this to ring in the new year. Opens January 1.

Guessing this will be one of those more serious horrors that begin the year... small horror surprise. Not quite big scares but something to get the year going.

Vertical picked this already completed project up. Produced by Darren Aronofsky (The Whale, Caught Stealing) and writer of Black Swan who is also directing.

Vertical does small releases... this will be in and out of theaters quickly... this is how these deals are structured. They get them into usually 1000 screens, not much ad buys, and make most of their money from VOD based on the attention the release gets from the theatrical release. Then license to various platforms for streaming.

The movie: It's about a couple played by Gorden-Levitt and Dynevor dealing with some trauma they need to get over and go to a retreat in New Mexico. And there she falls under the spell of the spiritual leader (Jacki Weaver 2x Oscar nominee) while he's suspicious there are more sinister things bubbling under the surface. Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead is also around.

Vertical screened it and seems to have loved what they saw.

I expect a bit artsy, good reviews, a lot of moody, atmospheric slow burn. But who knows.

This is seriously the kind of movie that comes and goes from theaters fast... people like it, real horror fans will be disappointed, and online people see low boxoffice and write it off, but I wanted get the jump on this... and show this is how the deals are done:

  • Finished film privately financed.
  • A small company like Vertical picks it up paying for just North American rights.
  • Both parties know in advance Vertical can't do a big expensive ad campaign.
  • and all the ad stuff and release strategy are already burned into the deal.

Front light lumen rec for LA cycling city streets + dark hills

I ride an area from Hollywood to Santa Monica regularly, streets, plus Mulholland/canyons... So I need to be seen in the city at night and want cars to be like yeah I see that AND actually see the road in the hills.

This is mostly for dusk and night. 1-2 hours.

Budget $50–$100. What lumen range makes sense? Brand suggestions welcomed.

Thanks.

I'm loving Seasons 11 and 12 are on Shout's YouTube channel... I'm discovering them for the first time first time and they're hilarious, and I'm really looking forward to the RiffTrax Experiments... Mike and the guys and Rifftrax are so amazing and a nightly ritual for me. I like them all.

But I keep thinking about how weird the fan reaction to all of the new stuff has been.

When you strip away the nostalgia baggage and the "Joel vs Mike" and "old vs new" drama, the recent fund raising history of MST3K is kind of crazy right?

Joel brought MST3K back through crowdfunding and delivered three more seasons. Fans were mostly happy but there was always this undercurrent of anger that most revivals I feel get.

Then he tries to fund Season 14, and raises $2.7 million which was 68% of his $4 million goal (6 eps), and it was deemed a failure. He could have extended the campaign easily. I think he would have hit the mark. Instead it feels like he was emotionally done, and he sells to Shout Studios.

RiffTrax and Shout... with Joel still attached as a consultant, then announced four new Rifftrax experiment eps. They raised the exact same $2.7 million. (their 20k goal was symbolic not real) but now considered a massive success. lol

Same fanbase. Same dollars. Two fewer episodes. Completely opposite narrative.

Also some fans were angry Joel put Season 13 behind the Gizmoplex paywall. But the RiffTrax Experiments will also cost money to watch. The first episode is a theater release. It's gonna cost the same as a month of Netflix. The paywall didn't go anywhere. Just the name on the webpage changed.

I love both RT and MST and can't wait for any and all new eps.

Customers there have dropped like 90 percent very quickly.

Not that long ago like last year this was a hot spot. Been there for 20 years and always busy.

This is not gradual decline this is an overnight there one minute gone the next.

This is located a few blocks west of La Brea on Sunset Blvd.

I live nearby and it was always packed or crowded especially late. I've been a few times. Now this place always for 20 years people complained about the food or the servers or the prices. But that didn't change anything. Always crowded... was open really late.

But now I noticed just recently like 3-4 months probably more it's absolutely a ghost town. It's crazy. Like night and day. They've even been closed on some days which never happened before. It's just weird to go by and see no one in there.

Does anyone know what happened? It has to be something specific. Not like I said before prices or food... this was a very quick and dramatic shift.

  • This is the first film from Gene Simmons (yes kiss)/Hamilton Productions... who are aiming to make 25 films over 5 years. Sort of fun action movies.
  • This was their first. Honestly the reviews are great for a fun B movie. 75 on RT with a 77 audience verified.
  • Magenta Light Studios released this in the US... they have US rights. And they are just 3 years old. Their previous best opening was their first, Strange Darling at $1.1 million. Deep Water nearly doubled that.
  • Magenta has only US rights, so the marketing spend was not much. This was a chance for Magenta to get themselves out there. And they did it.
  • When they sold US rights to Magenta, Simmons/hamilton knew there wouldn't be a big splash (no pun intended)... it was basically what a small startup could put together. There's a natural boxoffice limit what something like this can do with little ad spend.
  • $2 million opening, good reviews, first film out of a brand new production partnership. And the VOD window is where this one will do its real business.

She played Nurse Gwen and Nurse Able plus others.

Here's her deadline obituary. She lived a great life.

Gwen Farrell Adair, the actress known for playing various nurses on MASH has died. She was 94.

Adair’s son announced that she died of natural causes on Thursday in Sherman Oaks.

Born in Austin, Texas, Farrell made her onscreen debut in the second episode of M*A*S*H in 1972, appearing on the CBS war comedy drama as various nurses throughout the show’s 11-season run that concluded in 1983.

During her time on the show, she played Nurses Gwen, Wilson, Butler and Able, as well as an anesthesiologist.

Farrell, who was married to LAPD Detective Frank Adair, also appeared in a 1975 episode of Starsky & Hutch, as well as movies like Black Gunn (1972), Soylent Green (1973), Coffy (1973), Earthquake (1974), Towering Inferno (1974) and Billy Jack Goes to Washington (1977).

In addition to acting, Farrell began managing Los Angeles boxers in the 1970s and became the first female licensed referee in ’79. She also owned and operated a Fatburger, which her mother Lovie Yancey founded in 1947.

“But beyond her accomplishments, Gwen was so much more to her family,” Farrell’s family wrote in a GoFundMe created for her funeral expenses. “She was a grandmother, a guiding light, and a steady source of love and wisdom. She had a way of making those around her feel supported, understood, and cared for without needing recognition.”

The family added, “Her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts, one that cannot be filled. We will miss her voice, her strength, and the quiet comfort she brought into our lives. While we are heartbroken, we are also incredibly grateful for the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.”

My friend is going today and always brings back a cookie... he usually gets the big mickey shaped one with chocolate covered ears... both of us are tired of it and trying to figure out another one,

Like a big Disney specific cookie. Not just like a regular chocolate chip thing.

Inside the park not downtown Disney.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Edit: Great replies thanks. Churro Mickey and the Jack Jack cookies seem like the best bets today. But any idea why this is like 60 percent downvoted? Is this a bad type of post? (update) I've been told using Cali instead of the full California is cringe to some lol... well the world is insane... and there's no going back so I hope whoever is cringing can get over it. I was a pass holder for many years... that's what we called it when there.

Not just the leads... but even actors from season to season... who would you like to see either donning the mask or running in fear?

u/Freddy-Philmore — 24 days ago

I'm proud I got through it... the theater was empty so I was able to check the time without bothering anyone. I imagine very few of you caught this.

Big plus... It's very beautifully shot like gorgeous. Director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

It's very well acted. Everyone is giving it their all.

The story could have been great, it has elements of Ghandi and Braveheart and Gladiator... someone should have been able to whip up a fun historical epic but this just isn't it.

I think they were so intent on it being understandable for international audiences and trying to be as accurate as possible with that in mind, they missed the boat on both.

They bring up names of tribes like we're supposed to know what it means... cultural things happen without setting them up. It's a series of nice scenes and shots. You get the overall arc of the story... it's just the why was confusing a bit.

The big issue is it's just dull and waiting around until the last act. The last act is quite good but you're not really invested too much. And even then you get confused with which tribe is which... which flank is who.

But this in no way is like the worst movie ever made... many nice things about it. Just falls flat in telling the story.

Plus the title is awful. So generic. And really has nothing to do with what it's actually about.

This comes from IFC which has been putting out good ones the last few years.

My theater was LOVING this... I didn't see it coming. Going in most people would know the concept but it really moves in a wild and crazy direction.

The trailer hides a lot of stuff... let's just say that.

It's definitely lower budget but if you like Ready or Not and They Will Kill You this might be your thing.

Samara Weaving is great... as is Jason Segal... but Juliette Lewis and Timothy Olyphant are wicked good. Man what a fun time.

I wouldn't argue if this was in the horror aisle. If not it feels close.

It builds and builds...it feels like it starts as comedy then weaves its way through thriller comedy, action comedy, and tips its toe in horror comedy.

It's a remake of Norwegian movie The Trip which is described as action horror comedy.

28 of them original... not sequel reboot etc.

I'm including The Mummy... besides the title it's a completely original film.

Of the 28: a lot of nice small budget surprises like Cold Storage, Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die, Exit 8, Dead Man's Wire

Best bigger budgets: Send help, Hail Mary, 28 Years Later Bone Temple.

Worst: Protector, Psycho Killer, Mercy
