It's taken a couple of years, but I do live alone so obviously couldn't put in other people's drinks.
I'm not a knife maker (or a woodworker).
Had to make a tool to open the proprietary screw thing, but otherwise this was pretty seamless. Forget the wood type - red oak is it? Finished with Danish oil. Not as functional as the plastic grips, but a bit of fun.
I made a mallet before (the big one) and did a blind tenon. I want to make a mini mallet for my nephew and wanted to try a full tenon. This, it seems, is quite a bit harder, (non-round ones anyway, round is easy). Maybe because pine is soft, and compresses under the chisel, or because I was simply squaring off a hole (rather than a rectangle with 2 side by side holes like I see most people doing... Would this have been easier?) My chisel probably isn't quite sharp enough. I think on the real piece I'll stick with a circular hole. Problem with a test piece is that woods behave differently.
I don't know why I sanded this up to 240. Maybe because I know that secretly I'll just give him this one, he's only 5.
We don't put finishes on mallets, right?
Making a mallet using a mallet I made was fun. Working on the floor makes me think I'll absorb the skills of artisanal Japanese Miyadaiku. Hasn't happened yet....
Tasty. Everyone please go buy crosta and Mollica pizza bases so they don't go out of business.
And it's delicious! 'La Regenta', apparently... robusto. What a pleasant surprise. First third was you know just really surprisingly tasty, 2nd third was just as good, perhaps a dash harsh, and a decent nicotine hit, but I haven't smoked one in a while... I suspect the rest will be nice too.
Have a nice weekend chaps.
Squeaky bean bbq chicken, mushrooms, chillies and- for the first time ever I think - coriander guac. This was very very very tasty. Apologies to any locals - I bought the last 3 bases from tescos.
What will tomorrow's have on it I wonder?
Not sponsored, though I can dream.
I posted a couple of project updates but reddit isn't a forum so isn't great for that format. So I deleted the old posts. Here's the final thing - unfinished pine (tested some Danish oil, looked no better at all after even 3 coats), 3.6mm hardwood ply friction help in place, and 50 (for my brother in law's 50th) dice sized cubes of sapele, beech, maple, red grandis and ash. Can't post videos but it's a silent sweet type, not ticking clock.
Very pleased with how this turned out. Thanks for the help and advice on the glue ups etc - the tape around the edge then flue and fold did it.
Used my cheap table saw for the 15 degree cuts - turns out a dodecagon is s surprisingly forgiving shape, especially when I didn't bother to cut the sides to equal length!!
So I guess I need to route a groove in each of these pieces to slot the (soon to be larger, and dodecagonal in shape) 3mm ply dial in place of the placeholder piece, atop which all of the squares will sit.... This is to clearance the watch movement beneath the dial, which is about 15mm thick so it sits flat in the wall
I don't know if I'm the only person who doesn't really plan a project and instead just measures once and starts cutting, but it's not recommended...
Also how the hell will I glue and clamp the mitres? Long piece of circumference tape?
Thanks!
For my brother in law's 50th. Might do 50 blocks there, haven't decided yet, haven't finalised design. Woods are Sapele, Maple, Beech, Ash, Red Grandis, thinking of backing it with 6mm ply. I definitely measured the height of the clock hand stack shaft before cutting all of these blocks to ensure that the hands would just clear them by exactly 0.5mm. This is like my 4th project this week - I'm loving this hobby.
One meal out which you can spot by the plate, otherwise all home cooked (though plenty of delicious UPFs consumed too). Some weird combos - was a bit all over the place this month.
Well this is interesting - 40% off or half price could easily be the difference between an independent and main dealer service.
✅ Step 1 - watch a million youtube videos on bench design
✅ Step 2 - choose a design (I'm going for a very simple English/joiner bench)
✅ Step 3 - buy timber
❌ Step 4 - attempt to square and joint the boards with a number 4 jack!
Guess I need to go buy a jointing plane?
Don't judge me for my messy workshop okay
Crosta & Mollica base and I added fried mushrooms, ficken, cathedral city cheddar, caramelised onions.... I don't know how they get the base so crispy, my old wood fired ooni pizza oven doesn't have a patch on this.
Not too expensive, and deffo cheaper than a Pizza express mushroom pizza with like 1 mushroom mandolined to a 1 planck length thickness then spread out, and no vegan cheese. (Other stingy pizza establishments are available).
10/10 - highly recommend.
I followed our bald leader Mr Krueger's three simple tool mallet from 7 years ago. But I got impatient and skipped ahead IRL and glued it up without a wedge so we'll see if it holds - it's a pretty tight friction fit with loads of glue but if not I'll wedge it.
Okay look I'll be honest I did use a drill for the hole, but that was it! I don't own a brace. And to make up for it I spent most of the rest of the build sitting on the grass bare foot. The foot vice is surprisingly effective.
I didn't make the chopsticks.
The Han characters are supposed to say 'love' and 'food' on either side. They probably don't though...
Lessons learned:
1 I need a vice
2 pay attention to grain direction - initially I cut these against the grain - not ideal (also switched wood type because of what scraps I had)
3 use the right tool for the job (coping saw, not tenon saw), and hand sand before power sanding, it's often easier
4 learn, one day, that every project takes twice as long as you expect.
Please suggest me some others than don't take basically exactly like vodka.
Any why is the bracelet not connected? What glue would be best for this?
Mashallah
Discovered vegan black pudding at Asda and I think I've finally completed the vegan breakfast.
