New worry: resonant frequencies in grilles

New worry: resonant frequencies in grilles

I just saw something insane and my wife isn’t nearly as blown away as I am.

I heard this weird, high pitched noise while sitting on the couch. Comes and goes. Seemed like it might be my ceiling fan bearings going out or something. Yay, home ownership.

Well, I walk down the stairs to go take a shower and I hear it get loud as I walk past my return grille. Turns out, the fucking thing is resonating at about 1400hz. Frame isn’t loose, it’s just the blades. I can feel them vibrate and it stops if I rest my hand on it. They were pretty dusty, and it seems like that changed the airflow/mass enough. I cleaned it off and the noise almost went away but not entirely. Now I can’t unhear it and may end up needing to change it out 😂

Powder/ammo storage

How are you storing your powder/ammo?

I currently have mine in a closet, but we recently had a small fire (lithium battery) and it’s got me a little concerned. I’ve got a few lbs of powder, some primers, another few lbs of tannerite, and maybe a thousand rounds of loaded ammo. We recently had a baby, so I don’t have the money to buy a large gun safe right now. I’d like to add a bit of safety though.

Would a simple metal cabinet make any difference?

Warranty request: 2012 Charge

I’ve got a Leatherman Charge (I think from 2012, handle stamp “0512”) that I lost a couple years ago and recently found while cleaning. It’s a great knife and I’d like to get it tuned up!

Biggest issue is that the diamond file is shot. I also had it “professionally” sharpened by a company that kind of trashed the main blade. Other than that, it’s just general wear and tear.

I don’t see this model available anymore, so I’m a little concerned about what would happen if I send it in. If it’s marked “sentimental,” will they be able to fix the issues? If not, what would they replace it with if they don’t have parts available?

Best hole saw for 3/4" birch plywood?

I need to drill about fifty 2"ø holes in 3/4" birch plywood. This will be a finished product, so keeping the rough holes as clean as possible is a priority. Planning to drill a pilot hole, tape the cut, and then drill halfway through from each side.

Read some forum posts and watched the ProjectFarm test video. It seems like the Milwaukee Hole Dozer is a strong contender. My local shop has both bi-metal and carbide tooth options. The carbide is 3 TPI, the bi-metal is a little higher at 3.5TPI.

Thoughts on which one would be best here?

I'm also open to any other product suggestions or tips on getting the best results!

Timing Belt and “Tune Up”

Got my 2013 Pilot at the dealer for a wheel bearing replacement today. They’re also recommending a timing belt service and a “tune up.”

Any thoughts on this? What exactly would they do for a “tune up?”

UPDATE: My Hanklight Exploded

I reached out to Hank. Like some comments suggested, the lack of damage to the spring indicates a battery failure rather than a short circuit within the light.

I was hoping to have a bit more interest in the failure of the light body, which I believe to be dangerous.

Edit: I’m not trying to suggest there is something negligent or even unique about the D1K design. I only have this one experience, which seems to be pretty rare. That said, I have a background in medical device design. Failure analysis is how you learn to make things better. Not every failure can be anticipated, but this risk posed by similar events in the future can be mitigated.

My Hanklight exploded

Just had my D1K explode while sitting on my nightstand. The tube and tail cap ended up lodged in my ceiling. Glass blew out the front and the button popped out the side. Battery must have gone flying and ended up under the nightstand where it melted my power strip and chargers.

I’ve heard of this happening on a charger or if something gets hot or punctured, but this was just sitting. Glad my wife was home or our whole house could have burned down. Had this happened overnight, my head would have been ~1ft away and my 2 week old baby would have been across the room. I like cool flashlights, but this is not worth it.

Mattress support for vintage bed frame. Any input?

Planning to make a mattress platform/support to use in place of a box spring on a vintage king size bedframe. Current thought is to use 3/4" baltic birch plywood.

Let me know your thoughts!

Impact of fenestration pattern on bending stiffness in sheet material?

Are there any general guidelines/rules of thumb for the impact of fenestration (drilling holes) to the stiffness of a sheet material?

I am working on a horizontal structure which requires ventilation. My thought is to use plywood with a grid of holes drilled into it. Obviously, the size and pattern of the holes will impact the mechanical strength even if the total area of removed material is equivalent.

Some of my main questions are:

  • How to determine optimal hole size/spacing?
  • How does a straight grid compare to offset rows?
  • What is the optimal distance from the edge of the sheet (or the edge of the support structure, excluding overlap) be from the first hole?

Anything in here worthwhile? $10 each

Saw this post on my local marketplace. I don’t know anything about vintage razors, just started a few months ago with a Henson

Why do I like fireworks?

Everyone else in my family (parents, siblings, wife, kid) range from mildly enthused to mostly bothered by fireworks. They make me so happy on a deep, primal level.

Even as a little kid, my parents never lit fireworks and mostly complained about the noise and the mess in our neighborhood. Meanwhile, I would sit out on our deck and watch them until they would force me to go to bed, at which point I would open my window and just listen to the sound. I also love thunder and the feeling of the bass at a concert. There’s just something so viscerally satisfying about that feeling in my chest.

Where does that come from?

How/when did you start hunting solo?

Novice hunter here. I pulled a buck whitetail tag this year for northern ND, up by the border, and I'm tentatively considering trying to go out by myself.

I've taken three deer so far, one small buck as a kid with my youth group leader as a guide and two doe whitetail more recently with my BIL who is a huge outdoorsman. Also done some occasional pheasant hunting, always with a group. Never been hunting on my own though. I'm pretty intimidated by the thought, but it seems like a unique and worthwhile thing to do.

I've got basic gear, cleaned and processed my previous deer myself, and am somewhat familiar with the area. I'm sure if I asked my BIL, he would mark up some maps for me with good places to try and an overall strategy. Just don't want to get in over my head or do something stupid.

How to determine circuit routing? Adding GFCI to ungrounded outlets

Is there a reasonable way to determine which outlet is first in a given circuit?

I have an older home with many 2-prong, ungrounded outlets. I'm currently renovating a room for my kid and am planning to replace all the outlets. My understanding is that it's acceptable to add a 3-prong outlet to an ungrounded circuit as long as it is GFCI protected, and also that a GFCI can only protect downstream from itself.

If there isn't a good way to do this, would it make more sense to use a GFCI breaker or just put GFCI outlets in everywhere?

Gen 1 consumables (oil, filters, etc.): OEM or high-end aftermarket?

Got my 2013 ridgeline a few months ago and it's time to do my first round of basic maintenance. Planning to change the oil, oil filter, engine air filter, and cabin air filter.

Does anyone have a recommendation for products? Previous owner used OEM for everything. I'm not opposed to that if they're really the best.

Also, is there anything else I should be checking?

My charger is damaging my batteries

Fairly new to the hobby. I pulled out my old charger (used an 18650 mech mod back in college), but it seems to be tearing the casing on my batteries.

Is it possible to repair the wrap? I know it’s not safe to use with a torn insulator, but I don’t have a good local source for batteries. It would be great if I could repair them.

Also, what is a good charger that won’t ruin my batteries in the future?

Recommendations for a meat/bone cleaver?

My wife is Asian and her family is coming to visit in about a month. Her mom likes to make a style of curry with chopped chicken, including the bones. It's absolutely delicious but I'm not letting my Global anywhere near that. Need something dedicated.

Looking for a European-style cleaver with a relatively soft, tough steel. Carbon steel is ok if the performance/cost is going to be better. Also, I've been using a Lansky fixed angle system and homemade strops so far. Might finally try to dip my toes into freehand sharpening. A big, soft knife seems like a good place to start.

Saw something that really shook me last night (TW: fatality)

I watched a 19yo kid die yesterday. He was riding a motorcycle and a truck, driven by another 19yo, pulled out in front of him. Not sure who was "at fault" but it doesn't really matter much. I can't get the image of that broccoli-headed kid standing at the side of the road staring at a broken body lying amongst the blood and debris out of my head.

I was one of the first people on scene. I've got some training and carry a first aid kit, tourniquet, etc. but there was nothing I could do. I wanted so badly to do something, anything. I just stayed until the police came, gave a brief statement, and went home. My kid was already asleep and my wife was in the shower, so I just washed dishes for a while and then went outside to watch the sunset and throw a ball for my dog. I talked to my wife about it a bit, but she's 7mo pregnant so I don't want to put more on her right now.

Not sure why I'm posting this here. I just felt like I needed to talk about it. Another man came up to the scene after a few minutes and said something to the tune of "this is why I don't let my kid ride those things." I get the sentiment but, in the moment, that just made me so angry.

TPMS light on. Can't disable TCS. Help!

I bought my 2013 Ridgeline earlier this year. It's been amazing! Less than 45k miles, so it's in great shape.

Only real issue so far has been a TPMS error. It was on when I bought the vehicle, so it's not like it was hidden or anything. However, I didn't realize a TPMS error prevents the TCS system from being turned off. This can be a PITA when we get heavy snow.

Has anyone successfully fixed this issue? I believe it's something to do with the controller, based on some searching online.

I borrowed this reciprocating saw from my dad for a project. I'm using a brush "blade" to help scrub the last 5% of paint off some wood paneled walls I am stripping. It works great, but I can only get 10-15 minutes of work out of my 2AH batteries.

Looking at buying some larger ones. Lowes has a deal right now for 2 free tools with a 2-pack of the 5AH batteries. One of the options is the upgraded brushless saw. Would this make a big difference with power consumption/battery life?

Also, how do the PowerStack batteries compare to the standard?
