The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to GENESYS RPG | Tabletop Empire

Hello There!

My name is Nate and I run a channel called Tabletop Empire. I mostly cover the *other* Narrative Dice game by FFG / EDGE, but I am starting up a Beginner's Guide Series for Genesys as well!

This series will cover everything GMs and Players will need to know rules-wise to start playing, with some other helpful concepts and philosophies shared along the way.

This is just video 1, so a bit of an overview video to the system, but I'll be starting to fully dive deep with the next video for the Dice.

Hope you enjoy, and let me know your thoughts!

Hey its Nate / Tabletop Empire. What do you want in a Genesys Beginner's Guide Video Series?

Hello There! My name is Nate and I have a channel called Tabletop Empire on YouTube. I mostly make content on the other narrative dice game from FFG/EDGE. But I have some stuff for Genesys, with 2 Live Plays, an upcoming actual play campaign that blends the other game with a fair bit of Genesys, GM'd by Jeff aka Joress from RPGSessions.

On top of those, a few years ago I started a Beginner's Guide Series for Genesys, but I didn't get very far. That said, some people have been sharing those videos lately, but I have been planning on starting the series over now for about a year, for a few reasons:

- Making some improvements as a whole for both the Script and Editing.

- Removing the gross AI green screen background

With me finally starting to write out some scripts, and planning on videos to start on it this month, what are some things you would like to see this time around? What did you like or not like? I want to create a great resource to introduce new players and GMs to the game, and I would love to get some community feedback to take into consideration. I start filming the first video Wednesday 🫡

Thanks in advance for reading and your input!

PBE double up - Cannon “hit box”

Play a couple rounds of double up yesterday and I can’t tell you the amount of times that I went to place a unit in my bottom right corner only to have it get sent in the cannon instead.

I feel like the Cannon’s hit box is bigger than it used to be? Anybody else have this issue?

FFG Star Wars - DARK UNDERWORLD

Last year my friends and I ran a 30 episode campaign of Star Wars Edge of the Empire.

A Human, Twi’lek, Wookiee, and Toydarian navigate the criminal underworld of Coruscant in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi. It’s an anti-hero style adventure where the four chase clues of a mysterious artifact, fight for a seat of power against the other syndicates, and deal with the demons from their past that refuse to stay buried.

If interested, check it out here: YouTube - DARK UNDERWORLD Episode 1 - The Secret of the Seven-Pointed Star

Our next campaign THE UNNATURALS begins in 4 weeks, and that will be using primarily Force and Destiny, with a little bit of Genesys mixed in.

The Unnaturals - An Upcoming Force and Destiny Actual Play Campaign

Hello There! My name is Nate and I am the creator of the SWRPG YouTube channel Tabletop Empire. It has always been my goal to try to create fun, helpful, and quality SWRPG content. I have a ton of videos to help new players learn the game, most notably the Beginners Guide Series.

Throughout 2025 we ran and produced our first Actual Play Campaign titled DARK UNDERWORLD, an Edge of the Empire story set in the the criminal underworld of Coruscant just after Return of the Jedi. It’s an anti-hero style adventure where the four chase clues of a mysterious artifact, fight for a seat of power against the other syndicates, and deal with the demons from their past.

One of the goals was to create a Star Wars RPG Actual Play with as high of a production quality as we could, while simultaneously telling a great story with compelling characters. We learned a lot from our first campaign, and now we are getting ready to start recording our 2nd, THE UNNATURALS.

Premise:

As Imperial rule across the galaxy begins to crumble, something long dormant awakens in the Outer Rim. A new threat rises from a self-imposed slumber. A Human, Togruta, Kyuzo, and Nautolan-Pantoran are brought together by destiny, but will they rise to confront this growing threat, or allow the galaxy to fall into unnatural chaos?

System:

Force & Destiny, with a few Genesys-inspired changes this time around.

Our Cast & Crew:

Jeff (aka Joress), who played Kiinon last time, will be the GM this time around. He is one of the 3 great minds behind RPGSessions. He also has run games for FFG/EDGE at cons like GenCon, and has over a decade of experience running the FFG Narrative Dice systems.

My friend Simon is once again handling the cutting down of the footage, removing the fluff and silences that can bog down an AP.

I am stepping down from the GM chair to play a Togruta named Mira. I'll also still be handling much of the behind-the-scenes work: coordinating the players, creating overlays and visual assets, adding music and sound effects, providing a final pass for cutting out fluff, or anything else needed on the post-production side of things.

Noah, who previously played Ragro, will be playing a Human named Kaden. Lacey, who played Shay, will be playing a Nautolan-Pantoran named Rinni. Joe, who played Mott, will be playing a Kyuzo named Con.

We also commissioned artwork for the characters and backgrounds from Maggie Nizich. She hand-drew everything, except the channel logo SVG, and she was incredible to work with.

All of the people who come together to create these campaigns make them far better than anything I could accomplish on my own, and I'm incredibly grateful for every one of them.

So, now getting to the main reason for this post:

We start recording next week, and there are a good number of things we will be trying to improve upon for our next go around. However I would love to hear from you! Before our first campaign, I asked you all for some input before we started, and your input actually made a huge difference in how the AP was approached for the better. So once again, I am looking for some feedback.

If you watched DARK UNDERWORLD, what did you like or dislike? What would you like to see changed, or remain the same, or improved upon? If you never got around to watching, what are some things you wish other APs would do or change? And as always, if you have any questions for me, I am happy to try and answer. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

SuperScale is broken on DR21

Ive only tested it using 2x enhanced (on both a Windows Desktop (Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 4070), and an M2 macbook pro) and on both machines the exact same thing happens: Timeline wont play or export. If I try to export it freezes the entire program with the exception of the Remaining time just keeps going up with no export actually happening, and is stuck frozen until it is force quitted.

This was working fine yesterday on DR20.

My humble plea for 2 songs stripped down at VIP (Sorry im not really a singer 😅)

So its not a perfect arrangement (Absolomb is actually really hard to sing and play at the same time for like post-chorus 1 lol), I am not really a singer and I know I am not great at it, just a fan who is a little more than mildly obsessed with Absolomb and Lune, and would cry if I heard either song during the Fall tour during the show, or stripped. This video is my humble petition for either or both songs.

If you are more talented than me, here is the chord chart I pieced together using Open E chords. I would love to hear someone better than me take a stab at it.

Green Screens coming back into stock soon?

Any idea if/when these will be restocked? I'm seeing posts 10m and 4m old with this issue, did it restock and sell out since then, or have they been unavailable for the past year?

VIP Stripped Down Song Wishlist

Going VIP to Raleigh NC. Yes I know its probably APWD, Smiles, and Scarlet. If I had the special super power of being able to request ANY 3 songs stripped down:

Smiles, Absolomb, Lune

I would literally cry if I heard Acoustic Lune.

(I will be perfectly happy with whatever they choose to play)

My song ranking prediction, Before Hearing them Vs ~30 listens

So back when the track list first dropped and all we had were song titles with no music yet besides 2 singles, I stumbled across this post, ranking the songs based solely on guesses by song title. I thought the idea was fun so I chipped in in the comments with this prediction, and then forgot about the post until this morning:

  1. heaven on high
  2. everyone dies alone
  3. a pale white dot
  4. carry on
  5. subhuman
  6. neon valley
  7. Talk
  8. blackwall
  9. Unlocking
  10. Mr God
  11. Obsession
  12. Malevolent

Well, I have listened to the album probably 30 times in the past week, and I have an idea of a ranking atm:

  1. Heaven on High
  2. Everyone Dies Alone
  3. Carry On
  4. Talk
  5. Unlocking
  6. A Pale White Dot
  7. Blackwall
  8. Malevolent
  9. Mr God
  10. Neon Valley
  11. Obsession
  12. Subhuman

Funny to see I was right about Heaven on High, but the title just sounded like it could be the next It's Only Smiles, and man did the riff and the chorus and solo not disappoint.

EDA is the only song on the album to make me cry so far. That 2nd verse and pre-chorus goes hard. Part of me wants to rank it first, but I just like the chorus and riffs and solos in HoH a tad more, and I really mean just barely. Shoutout to matt's sick drum solo bit in EDA.

Carry On and Talk are also pretty much tied, but I find myself singing that last chorus to Carry On all the freakin time, and vibing to it just a hair more than Talk. The "I Refuse I rebuke" section of Talk goes hard tho.

Unlocking has been bouncing around the top of this list, but I think I just prefer Carry On and Talk, and those have grown on me and even surpassing Unlocking, which a few days ago was in 3rd.

Not sure what I was expecting from the known to be instrumental track. I think my brain was expecting like an acoustic instrumental Lune style song with lots of strings and synths and acoustic guitars. Now, APWD is the perfect closer for this album, and I do love it, but it turns out that I just liked the others above it a bit more.

Blackwall and Malevolent are close to tied, but again the chorus in Blackwall just gets stuck in my head all the time. Ive also been listening to more 4SA and Nik Mystery recently.

Malevolent is a song that didn't click with me immediately, but now around 30 listens is starting to grow on me. The riffs are sick, the violin part is lovely. I think the melody style for the chorus is more of a grower, similar to how Dracul Gras' chorus was a grower for me. Itll probably shoot up with time, but for now its still in 8th.

Mr God and Neon Valley are close calls for me. The chorus of Neon Valley doesn't quite scratch that itch for me and Mr God just goes so hard and is so groovy. That said, if this was an instrumental list, Neon Valley would probably be top 5.

Obession and Subhuman. Im not huge on death / deathcore / black metal. I love these songs, spencers vocals go hard. Will Ramos' part is brutally heavy. That said, the black / death elements to it are not typically my thing, and as such the songs happened to land bottom of the list. Again, still bangers.

There isnt a weak song on the album. The list is bound to change again over the next year.

How Many times have you listened to the new album already?

Ive been listening to the entire album about 4-8 times a day for the past near 7 days 😅

Anyone else just have it playing on repeat?

APWD Song and Album Rankings, alongside the rest of the discography

Song Ranking: Each tier is organized by album release, and song order on album. For example, Lune, Reptile, and Smiles would be at the top if it was ordered.

Album Ranking: ordered, Left to Right: Best to Worst. For Example, P3 > P5 > Jugg

Just my opinions, I already know Imma catch Hell Below for my opinion of Froggin' Bullfish. I love you love it, idk why it just has never fully clicked with me as much.

I could see any or all of these songs on APWD bumping up a tier over time. I just don't know if I can quite yet put any of them on par with Lune, Smiles, Reptile, Satellites, or any others in Eargasmic tier. But hey at one point Satellites was probably in "good" tier for me, before it just clicked. The beauty of periphery songs is they always have a chance of just clicking with the brain out of nowhere and going from good to WOW.

Another APWD Thoughts and Feelings Post

First of all to the boyos: great record. You set out to make the record you wanted to make, and you killed it. There is not a single weak track on this album.

I have listened to the album probably 10-15 times now in the past 2 days, and have hit the point of being able to sing along with a lot of the choruses. Again, there is not a single weak song on the album.

That said, I think it lands for me somewhere in the bottom 3 of albums for me. And here is why:

Periphery doesn't have a bad song. All of their songs are at least "Great" to me. But sometimes, some songs hit that level of high euphoric bliss of just being indescribably good.

P1 - Letter Experiment

P2 - Luck as a Constant

Jugg: Heavy Heart, Alpha, Rainbow Gravity, Bad Thing, Omega, Stranger Things

P3 - Marigold, Flatline, Absolomb, 💦LUNE💦

P4 - Reptile, Smiles, Sentient Glow, Satellites

P5 - WIldfire, Atropos, Wax Wings, Dying star, Zagreus, Dracul Gras

For me I think APWD has a bunch of great songs, and even a few I think that are a bit above great, but not a single song for me on this record stands out yet as that euphoric level of experience I get from some of these other songs listed above. I think the album excels at a lot of things, and in a lot of ways it is the next iteration and improvement (hello Spencer's vocals holy moley).

Overall, I am happy they made the record they wanted, I appreciate something a little different from them, and it will have a special spot for me still. I just kind of hope that this album is a 1-off for short but punchy songs through and through, and in the future we get some more epic euphoric noodlyriffage we know and love. If not, well, everything they create is gold anyways, so Ill be here for it.

So yeah, APWD is bottom 3 album for me from them, but this band is the GOAT so that isn't saying much.

S: P3, P5, Juggernaut

A+: P4

A: P2 APWD

A-: P1

B: Clear, Icarus

P.S. Just realized Goon and Lune rhyme and I dont think that is a coincidence 💦
