Look at Wayne Gretzky’s wiki page. Would a new fan be able to tell you how many Stanley cups he has? What years he played for the Kings? How many all-star appearances he has? His record as a coach?

Compare this to LeBron James’ Wiki page or Tom Brady’s Wiki page. How many championships, all-star appearances, and dates played for which team are all front and center.

This has been discussed and the common rebuttal is that team years will make the info box ‘cluttered.’ This is nonsense.

When the time comes, go to Commencement

I know a lot of people here are wrapping up their PhD in the next year so let me dispense some advice: you should (and perhaps need) go to commencement and get hooded.

You need a weekend where all the attention is on you; where everyone gushes about how incredible it is that YOU (not in general; YOU) got a PhD and how awesome that is. For me personally, it was an important emotional release that allowed me to move on. Don’t gamble with getting post-PhD blues and just go to commencement. You’ll be surprised how relieved you feel afterwards.

Beautiful opening guitar riffs?

Looking for recommendations of grunge songs with beautiful opening riffs. Not necessarily iconic but beautiful. For example, I would consider Mad Season’s River of Deceit opening riff beautiful.

Should PhDs be revoked for misconduct outside of the PhD?

I was watching BobbyBroccoli’s video about the Schön scandal where Jan Hendrik Schön fabricated data during his career at Bell labs. In the aftermath he was fired (fair; justified) but also had his PhD revoked. This is despite no evidence of misconduct during his PhD. This last action is curious to me.

Should a PhD be considered a ‘living’ document that can be revoked? Obviously 99.999% of people earning a PhD are in no danger of fucking up as bad as Schön did but, even in Schön’s case, I don’t know if a PhD should be revoked for future actions outside of a PhD program.

I saw on LinkedIn a link to a spreadsheet that is attempting to compile every PhD earned by a Deaf person. If this sheet is to be believed, ~850 PhDs have been earned by DHH people. I’m curious if any PhDs out there are not represented on this list.

By this, I do not mean the literal price of eggs. Instead, I’m curious if there exists an article that discusses these sort of political shorthands that refer to wider concerns. Google’s AI that is forced upon everyone suggests the term “bread and butter issues” but that doesn’t appear to have an article either.

Hopefully I’m not the only one who noticed how prominent that term became, especially during the 2024 election cycle.
