Barometric pressure

I am finding this is one big barrier to coping with arthritis in my neck. I understand this is a serious condition and I was able to get my levels from age 30 Level 4 to age 34 Level 3.

Now, I am finding it is hard to feel, like the whole numbness in L4 situation and waiting on MRI results. On the plus side, using magnesium and higher dose of Vitamin D3 at 2500 IU very effective.

I just feel like when the weather shifts around like in the dead of winter January to March and that pressure shifts, I am not made to have a lot of stamina. How do you cope? For reference, I am fairly thin and try to be active.

Geriatrician?

Hello

My Father's family Dr finally listened to me today about 6 major flags I declared mattered that relate to Alzheimers. For reference, their Ma was diagnosed about age 78 and my Dad just turned 76. There are major lifestyle differences between them as well. This was why they figured he was immune. His Mom was more like a stay at home, early retired lady from a glass factory, ate very well. He worked long hours in the military and also was a hobby boxer. Family Dr never even heard of CTE and I personally think it matters a lot if you have had repeat mild concussions or similar.

Did anyone find a Geriatrician to be benficial?

I'd like to be positive and say, well this is not quite Alzheimers because they question things relating to a vision loss. But today, I was asked to walk them into the public library bathroom and bring a library card...LOL so honestly, I think my suspcicious have been validated thus far.

High Quality Assisted Senior Care issues

My Mom is in an assisted care in a state I do not live in. I was informed by a medtech several medications ordered did not come to the building and my Mom was sent to a nearby hospital. It sounded like it was a blood pressure pill. My issue is they have no reasonable explanation. She gets easily upset if billed by other hospitals. Should I try to get a better answer? I was told by the Nurse they sent her to hospital for her shaking and then she wanted to know what technician reported the issue to me. I figured the technician needs to report it before it got to this problem! I was not sure her name. To my knowledge, a facility charging 4900 a month needs to do better. This can not be the norm or can it?

Do your exercises

I was a wreck 3 years ago and happily better this year. I really did not know what it would take tbh. So I know what many of your are going through.

I tried this exercise in the evenings that worked wonders. All you do is shake your ankles from side to side. It has roots in yoga for the vagus nerve. If you look any of them up on youtube, exercises for calming gas, the gut etc, WOW do they help!

My Specialist had a note about exercising and although I took it personally because I really did not fit a routine into my schedule and do not have hug muscles, he was right because it makes anything easier like releasing endorphins.

Other than that, eating warm foods but in smaller amounts can really help healing. Blessings

A tip for future LTO's

I recently learned an "LTO" I was offered way back did not show up on my record of work history (I asked for it to show if I am hired at a new board).

From the 12 days I worked there, here are some things I wish I knew before.

  1. When the Principal says they have no Intermediate French teacher for 4 classes, you have the right to ask how many LTO's have quit since starting. In my case, it was completely due to outrageous behaviours from students with serious issues.

  2. They can easily figure out by day 9 after all the planning you worked on, you can not be the ideal candidate for convenience. As much as we all say it has to do with qualifications, it can easily be due to using you and then saving a lot of money.

At the end of the day, I have a portfolio of seven quality lessons I created for this class and I know the experience helped me make connections. I still believe other new Teachers should know these games can happen if you are not aware of them.

How have you approached researching odds of being hired?

I want to collaborate with people who have reasonable research skills. In several large boards, there is limited public data about the number of people hired for perm contracts. Take Peel, in one recent year, they only hired 230 some odd perm contract teachers. Yes it is possible to earn a living as a Supply Teacher but in the long run for many, the goal is to move beyond this point. We need to source the stats where out of 3000 annual graduates, what is the expected hiring for 3 categories: Supply/Long Term/ Perm Contract

For reference, since I was hired to work in 2018, I have held just 4 LTO's because I have been practical and selective. I have earned a living all the while but now that like many I am considering trying to work a perm contract, what those chances look like. I already have taught French with no AQ in most of these contracts. I have also earned a Masters degree and will graduate next month. The reason I post this is unless these statistics are completely available, people will blindly graduate believing anything is easy to break through once people decide to retire. It somewhat concerns me because without good contracts, we are seeing too many perm teachers expected to do way too much work with too many students. What is everyone being told right now? Do you believe it?

Would you share your Microbiome tests with your GI Dr?

I had a very good report the last visit I saw my GI Dr. I had a diagnosis of IBS with anxiety triggering it. I also had it prolonged due to food poisoning that lasted 2 weeks. Fast forward to a year and half later I have waited to see them to get documentation of a jaw injury relating to whiplash. So eating has not been like before, more slower. I finally could afford to get a microbiome test and got the results reviewed with a professional ND. According to the results, my probiotic is doing its job but I have been having a form of strep travel from my mouth to the gut and taking an antimicrobial changed my entire situation. All of a sudden my sleeping is better, I am not so hot, even my back aches are way down and yes, my gut does not feel irritated.

These Drs get a lot of money and they do not believe in these tests but they also know not to overperscribe antibiotics that are not as safe as what I used (oil of oregano). I am a person who does not want to see these Drs just to complain and ask them why they couldnt figure this out before. I also had to use a different mouth wash to fix this issue. If you wanted your Dr to support you, how would you approach this.

Feeling out new schools as an OT

I am curious if anyone has been in this situation and if so, would it be worth returning to test the waters?

In the 2025 academic school year, I would come into schools I could get to from a long commute. After regularly helping an ESL Teacher who was stressed due to unknown reasons and preparing for her maternity leave, I emailed her I would be opened to taking the role. This was November to December and the role would be from January till the end of the school year. She told me she would talk to the Principal. Principal called me and I explained I would be interested and she says there are 2 other qualified Teachers she would ask and get back to me. I never heard back. I came back in May covered a different class and asked that Teacher who took that LTO role. She said the Principal asked 2 perm teachers if they would want to cover her class and there was some reorganization and no LTO was filled. Now I did not know the entire story but there were about 16 different kids needed for ESL coverage in this room to be shared with the AM ESL Teacher and her originally.

On some days, I would see staff who was there a very long time ask me if I was a Teacher because I looked young and revealed how many years I have taught but by that point, they were already arrogantly leaving the room. On other days after leaving, a random retired Teacher would dangle a key in the air and remark she had permission to keep it because she worked in the school a long time. I can not figure out if this is normal or not? If I go back, purely because of the location, how could I beat the nepotism and get meaningful work? I do not have to go back but I honestly do not know if that whole situation is common.

Prioritizing Paying a Student loan?

Hello

I have a total of 41K in student loan debts to start paying in Feb. The plan last year was to use my pay raise and live frugally to tackle the 300 a month. I have never had student debt but I truly wanted to achieve a goal of getting my Masters so here I am.

Now, I am anticipating a legal settlement because I was injured in a MVA. The situation is brutal because I am not in the clear if I can work full time just yet so typically part time work I get around 31K. If everything works out, I will be making 70K sometime later on. My question is should I try to get rid of the student loan quickly if I want to get a home? Like most people, I would like one if I can find the right one.

I am not in any hurry to get a home and I probably will not buy one unless my spouse is financially prepared as he is expecting inheritance (excess of 900K). I am totally fine waiting for a home and I have always tried to live within my means. I am just wondering with this one debt how messed up it might be for me in general for a mortgage. We know people in private mortgages also.

Graduate Department Grading

I am trying to figure out logic after a course I took ended and have submitted evaluation of the Prof.

I understand the last course has to be stringent and challenging and encapsulates a culmination of learning from prior courses. We were asked to do a research project and it could be from 20-30 pages long. The other large project was to present all the stages of learning. In this presentation, we had to discuss a lot of points relating to how we made progress from peer input. When I got both grades, it was for both of these assignments. So I did not get a chance to figure out what was missing from the Professor alone. It felt very secretive, just review the rubric and read back 3 sentences. Does this make sense? In all the other courses, I had about 1-2 weeks to figure out if anything was missing in my research goals and report how I adjusted to this. I seriously can not figure out the purpose in me finding this all out when there is no way to take the next step and get a chance to make the necessary change. On the other hand, it relates to working as a professional and maybe everyone is tasked to reflect mostly alone to prepare for the working world.

I should also add that because I have an accomodation because of 2 medical issues, SOGS advised me to request a regrade for other specific reasons which make the Professor appear VERY strict and particular or borderline inconsiderate of student needs.

Genuine Concern About Rate to Train Teachers in Reading/Language Pedagogy

Just for context, I am an internationally educated teacher. When I was reading about the rate teachers are becoming skilled via Reading AQ courses to be qualified I just have so many concerns.

In the past, there was a degree of preparation through PD and through teachers college. I know of teacher leaders who took these courses and it takes time. The amount of products connected to serving interests of companies who produce tests and not necessarily research-based work is truly something we ought to think about though.

In a perfect world, if reading is very important to teach, especially with the declining rates, wouldn't it make sense to have more than one course in teachers college than farm these out where we have to pay just to gain the needed skill? Is having the Reading specialist in Elementary schools supporting the goal of improving out literacy rates? I agree with many AQ courses there is no time for in TC but why the reading ones?

We are using UFLI in grades 1 through 5 yes? We can use DRA to check levels. We can use Acadiance to screen. For levelled practice, I have tested out EPIC and Readworks. In the past, reports have shown students need real-world reading skills to complete tasks and we should teach them how to read signs and public. So I guess my other question is for anyone who has become a Reading Specialist, what skills do you find an average teacher should get trained with on the job without spending money on these courses? Isn't there another way we can serve students when we have been falling behind for a number of years?

What are decent areas to live for someone who cant deal with Lakeshore Rd AM traffic?

I was on my way to check out a building on Speers Rd today and quickly realized I need to zone in on an area that makes more sense if I am heading towards Oakville and Missisauga regularly. Looking to rent a 1 bedroom with outdoor parking, perhaps a newer building about 2100 a month or under.

How to cut down when you are on a diet for medical reasons?

I am trying to cut down my food costs and in this day in age, I am not sure I have the correct skills I really need. When I got a raise and was making about $4800 take home, I got into these habits of buying food I wanted on bad days. My housing costs are fine but it is the food I want to take down from 650 to as close to 350 as I can. I can not eat many high fat foods or dairy. I am wondering what other people do. A typical dinner is salmon/white fish, rice and canned veggies or salad. I can not afford Costco membership right now till I go back to work.

Reality of Obtaining Graduate Bursary

Last Fall, I sat in on a very promising welcome to Western Uni about many opportunities to qualify for Graduate bursaries. They specifically advertised this as helping anyone doing research.

This year, I lost income due to an illness, I study online, I am also an injured worker and...I was basically told because I pay low rent and I do not have to travel to Uni to work and study, there was nothing offered. I went from living off 4800 a month to about 2500 a month. Now while it is true that I had something in savings to help me get through, I just do not think their description of the $500,000 in funding available works out the way it came across. So I wanted to share the explanation given when I asked about it. Maybe the next round of students won't be as shocked as I was to be offered nothing.

As part of the review, the Financial Aid Office considers a variety of educational and living expenses, including but not limited to tuition, food, housing, and other miscellaneous expenses, to establish an estimated cost of attendance. This amount is then compared against the financial resources reported on your bursary application, as well as any other resources available to you during the study period, to determine your level of financial need. Students are expected to contribute available assets and resources toward the costs associated with their study period.

MRI

I am going for a second look tomorrow. Has anyone here been told the discs are OK, but you get mild sciatica? My condition has changed because my crazy MVA insurance stopped our physio after some bozo bashed into us parked last June.

I went from 4 injections and massage, laser for S1 and C4 to 4 months later my left leg goes stiff. They really could not find anything other than a tiny cyst on S1 so I am worrying they cant figure it out after taking a long trip to get this MRI. I just feel bad because I dont want my medical team thinking it is in my head. Also dealing with anxiety which my insurance is paying for my CBT.

Getting approved for a rental

Ontario based. I have had a really messy year where I am half way done in rehab from an injury and I worked half days. I will be getting a raise when I return because I completed a MA degree. The issue is I must move to this one area to cut down on 55Km commute now that I realize the extent of this injury but this seems like the only way I can go back to work and only then have the paystubs to prove my new income. Our credit is very good. I am with the same company for 5 years.

I will be going from 47K income to now about 66K income plus my spouse will have a savings account. What should I expect? I am very nervous about this because last year after applying to a new building, I was told I needed a guarantor and there were rumours the management did not approve a lot of people.

Process to get approved for apartment rental

I am on the verge of getting a larger pay once I finish another round of physio after a MVA accident. My issue I am not sure if I have to show the paystubs first to get approved for a typical apt. I won't be able to work most likely unless I move about 30km closer to my job. Physically, I can't do the 54km commute each day. Should I count on prepaying the rent and showing my savings account? I am just stressed in general about it because I was turned down last year when my income was about 49K a year by a company that I learned was not really telling me why. My credit is very good otherwise.

Trying to gain weight

Has anyone here noticed when you eat less saturated fat, metabolism changes?

In the heat this summer, I guess I lost some of my appetite and now I need to put back 5 lbs.

Typically some fresh goat milk, olives or healthy beef work but I am trying to expand this while on the diet.

Any tips would be great.

What are some great tips you have to network

Long story short, I am in a competitive school board because of the benefits and pension they offer. I figured out when some teachers I have filled in for as a Sub figured out I had good ideas, was completing a Masters degree, they would often not invite me back. I have receipts. So as annoying and petty as it is, it was a big lesson for me about insecurities.

I know good administration who would recommend me anyways but in general, what are some tips that worked for you to move ahead? The degree I am obtaining was not easy, many would not want to work through it as it focuses on building curriculum design both in schools and colleges and I am completing it this month. I learned more about assessments, equity and the topic of my choice than I did through my school board so I think it was worth my effort.

I honestly do not know what to do because most of the people who have invited me back to fill in for them have no ego issues and are men. So out of about 25 teachers, only 4 have reinvited me back and made me feel completely welcomed.
