"Forced" Retirement

Hey all - has anyone noticed a trend where teachers with more seniority are being assigned significantly more complex students (or just several extremely complex/difficult students) than in classes with younger/newer teachers? Perhaps with the aim of making the senior teachers' lives difficult in the hopes of goading them toward an early retirement?

I'm seeing this in my school. Maybe it's just my principal, or maybe it's a bit more nefarious than that - some sort of on the down-low guideline?

Placement supplies

P/J stream
What would you recommend to start getting in preparation for student teaching placements in the fall (laminator? Arts and craft supplies?)

I'm wondering if it would be wise to start seeking out deals and start a stock pile for when placements roll around

If you've already been through a placement I'm P/J, what supplies did you use?

Are your kids played tv shows during lunch breaks?

My kid has said this is happening regularly in their school. And they use YouTube. I emailed the teacher to at least switch to TVO online link to avoid kids showing unfiltered ads on YT. But that was before I knew it is a daily thing.

We as a family are very particular about no screen during meal time. Our kid is easily distracted and comes home with a barely touched lunch.

Is this the norm now? As parents do we have any say on this?

Thinking of Leaving Teaching — What Did You Switch To & Do You Regret It?

Has anyone here actually left the teaching profession? If so, what did you move into?

I’m honestly at a point where I don’t know if I can keep doing this long term. I went into teaching because I genuinely cared about kids and wanted to make a difference, but the reality of the profession feels completely different now.

The burnout is unreal. There’s barely any support, behaviours are escalating, and there are little to no consequences anymore. It feels like expectations for teachers keep increasing while supports keep getting cut year after year.

What’s also been hard is the unprofessionalism and disrespect I’ve experienced from some colleagues/admin. I expected collaboration and support entering this field, but sometimes it honestly feels isolating and toxic.

I’m also exhausted from the instability. I’ve spent a few years supplying/LTOing, constantly trying to prove myself, and it feels impossible to land anything permanent unless you know the right people or get lucky with timing. Meanwhile, I’m carrying huge student loans and wondering if all of this schooling was even worth it financially. I went back to school as a mature student to pursue teaching, so this career path was a very intentional decision for me.

I feel guilty even thinking about leaving because I do care about students, but I’m starting to question whether this career is sustainable for me mentally, emotionally, and financially.

For those who left teaching where did you end up? Do you regret it or was it the best decision you made?

Do you NEED a principal reference?

Hi, I’m fresh out of teachers college and am shaping up to apply to upcoming OT list postings that I was told by a VP should be coming up in my district soon. I am wondering (more like worrying) that if I don’t have a principal reference on my application that that’s an immediate no. I have all 3 of my previous ATs as references, and good letters or recommendation and practicum reports, I’m just lacking a principle reference unfortunately. Will my application likely still be considered? I’m really hoping to get on the OT list for my board so I can start supplying in September. Any advice is appreciated!

PETL union reps

This is a post from Felipe Pareja’s wife’s account. He is having an affair with another PETL VP Vickita Bhatt…. Kind of sad news considering collective bargaining is coming up. I wonder how many late night hotel rooms were paid for with our union dues.

trying to get into teachers collage after health issues and uoft killed my GPA

i had a bumpy undergrad with health issues and 1 really bad year in particular dragging down my entire degree average. However, if some schools look at my top 10 full credits--my average for that is a 77-78%. Even the schools that look at just top credits--am i still a bad candidate because of my overall gpa (its like a 69%). I did an education studies minor which had me do a 100 hour internship in a kindergarten classroom, and i volunteered a bit at a pediatric speech-language pathology clinic. I did a psych major and linguisitcs minor as well. getting an honours BSc. I'm applying for the next cycle this fall (programs starting in May). I wanna teach Primary. should i even apply? would it be worth taking a couple summer courses to boost my top 10 credit average to an 80? I can explain my health circumstances but don't have super solid proof as it was a complicated autoimmune disease. I do have a strong upward trend in my whole degree that reflects a turnaround point after i discovered how to cure myself. I'd like to go to western or uoft but i know it's competitive. My school (uoft) is notorious for marking harshly but idk if teacher colleges care at all 😞 --like commonly in psych courses for my last 2 years I'd get a B range grade, however the course average for the class would be a C or even C-... My transcipt shows course averages so that may put my average in context. Anyone with a similar profile that got in? Also do schools care if you did some semesters part-time? Should i try other provinces--Ualberta is somewhat appealing to me. Can i save myself for western by studying well for the Casper?

edit: I know how to spell college, idk how i made that typo lollll

Trying to Become Qualified in All 4 Divisions. Need Advice on Senior ABQs

I would like to become qualified in all four divisions. My undergraduate degree qualified me for Primary/Junior, and I recently passed the OISE Math Competency Exam so that I could enroll in the Intermediate Math ABQ, which I am currently completing.
I did not realize that becoming Intermediate-qualified does not automatically make me eligible to take a Senior Math ABQ. I am wondering if there are any Senior ABQs that do not require a teachable prerequisite.
I have quite a bit of free time this summer and would love to continue expanding my qualifications, but financially I am only able to take one additional course.

Any suggestions?

Is there anything I could do with my degree if don’t get a job teaching in the future?

Not sure if anyone has done this degree pairing before, but I’ll ask anyway. I am a concurrent education student doing an integrated studies BA (english teachable J/I) and BEd. Has anyone done this and can you do anything else with this degree or did I just confine myself to teaching positions only? I’m only asking bc I’m scared there won’t be enough jobs for me to apply to when I graduate in 5 years..

EDIT: thank you for all your responses! i’ll look into them all

Are you happy with your wages/salary?

Hey all, I may be moving back home to Ontario. I've been overseas for nearly a decade, so I know salaries vary by district. I want to hear from a couple of people how they feel about their income and what kind of lifestyle it affords them.

I've looked at some school board incomes but I feel like I always struggle to properly envision what it's like on the ground because so many factors are at play.

So if you could please share it might help me get a clearer picture.

DDSB secondary supply

Has anyone else noticed that supplying for secondary in DDSB isn’t steady anymore? This time last year I was getting calls everyday and now I’m lucky to get a half day a week. What is causing this slump?

Quick question about teachables

I want to become a high school teacher in Ontario. I am a history major and human geography minor. Could these be my teachables (primary and secondary respectively), or are they considered the same thing? I'm asking because a co-worker of mine was locked out of teachers collage due to being a history major and poli-sci minor, with both being considered under the same teachable.

Thanks!

Brock U’s B.e.d of Technology: fully online?

Hi there!

I’m an animator who is looking for some alternative options as my industry continues to explode into a thousand pieces. I’m also a college prof so I figured that teaching high school kids could be a good option for me.

I have a toddler and a growing family, so attending classes in Burlington isn’t an option for me. Of course my practicum will be in person at a closeby placement, but other than that, is the program fully online?

Anyone who’s currently attending that could answer would really help me out by answering!

Thank you in advance.

TDSB OT/ETH Application - no verification email?

I withdrew my March 2026 application and applied again for the new hiring cycle, as per the advice of the TDSB website and some commenters on here.

This time, I am getting zero confirmation email that I successfully applied after hitting “Submit.” I tried it twice and got nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just a glitch?

TDSB No Supply Offers

I got onto the TDSB high school supply list a month ago but I haven’t received any calls for supply work. I called the number I was supposed to and on the SFE website my status is “Registered”, and I never even see any available jobs whenever I look at the website.

Is this normal or did I miss a step? It feels weird that there are so many schools in TDSB and I haven’t been called or seen any jobs a single time.

teachers college in the UK??

I’m going into my fourth year at university, so i’n starting to now really look into teachers college programs, and i was kind of thinking about doing it abroad like somewhere in the UK.

I’m wondering what peoples experiences were like. And also is it hard to get accepted? what are some good teachers colleges in the UK? How expensive would it be (including rent and groceries and stuff)? Is it harder to get a teaching job in Ontario if i studied abroad instead of Ontario?

i’m so conflicted because i moved home after my second year at Laurier bc i was super home sick so it would be hard to be away from home but at the same time im pretty sure it’s only like a year so it’s better than a whole four years
