What advice do you wish someone gave you when you first started?

I’m working on a series of themed pdf books / lessons for beginners through intermediate players covering learning guitar, choosing gear, gear maintenance, using pedals, music theory, forming a band, and other helpful advice.

I know this is nothing new, but I’m putting my own spin on it to make the type of book that younger me would have been able to better understand. The books will involve some narrative storytelling throughout the process, and has the opportunity to not just cover gear and technique, but other helpful wisdom in the guitar and general performing artist lifestyle.

I’m already incorporating a lot of the answers to common beginner questions.

What are some things you wish someone had explicitly told you, or explained better, when you first started that you haven’t seen much in most lessons or tutorials?

Are Print Edition Numbers on the Packaging / Invoice?

I have a print coming in a few months from a recent drop on Tonari no Zingaro. Yay!!!

I’m not sure how long it will take me to find someone to frame it, so I’ll probably have to keep it in the box for a while. I would like to know what the print number is though, just for my curiosity.

Will this be marked on the box, or in the invoice somewhere when it ships?

Modding Warmoth Body for Fender Pickguard

I know there’s lots of options out there besides Warmoth, but they may the best option / price point tradeoff for what I’m looking for as I don’t want relic, don’t mind poly, and want binding and a matching headstock.

Warmoth seems like it would come in easily $500 less than others for a similar build. I can handle the electronics and fretwork. I just can’t paint it myself, or at least not any time soon, for various reasons.

I’ve read lots of people saying they had to trim off part of the bridge pickup route to get a normal pickguard to fit. I really prefer the look of the normal pickguard, but have some concerns about doing this mod to a finished guitar.

Can anybody post some pictures of what it looks like where you modded it? A picture of under the pickguard would be ideal, but even just a picture with the regular Fender pickguard on would be great.

How did it impact the paint? Would you do it again or do something entirely different?

Granary Pump Warranty Issues

I have the Granary. The pump failed less than a year after I first got it, and the warranty replacement showed the same issue within 3 months. For a while I could do some finnicking to get the pump to work again, but now it’s just gone.

Does anyone know if the replacement gets a fresh 24 month warranty?

Also, does anyone have the Granary 2 yet? Is the pump on this better? I’d like to get a second feeder, especially the one with the camera and sliding cover as one of my pets is on a prescription diet, but I don’t know if I can risk the cost with this QC.

Turner Throwing?

I see people talking about clacking tongs, and slapping spatulas, but has anyone else picked up the habit of throwing turners / spatulas like knives / axes?

Back in high school my friends group went full mall ninja and bought a bunch of throwing knives from the literal mall ninja store. We’d play pool in my friends basement and throw knives at the dartboard. Yeah, real edgy stuff…

So anyways, one day I’m at work and I’m looking at this turner, feeling the weight in my hand and thinking, I bet this would work. There was nobody else in the back, and a bunch of mostly empty boxes of plastic to-go containers.

I toss, and boom right on the mark. Stuck the corner in about an inch.

This became kind of a party trick I’d use to break the ice in a new kitchen, provided there was some downtime and I didn’t think it would piss anyone off.

It even landed me a job after a difficult interview. The managers had already seen dozens of people for the position and were clearly checked out. They’re going through the motions, then one of them says, “How are your knife skills?”

“My knife skills are amazing, and I can stick a spatula in the side of a cardboard box at 30 ft.”

“Well… we have to see this.”

Has anyone else picked up this habit?

And yes, I’m well aware that I’m a dork. And no, there was no meth involved, just standard ADHD. Meth would have probably chilled me out.

Time for Another Austin Powers Movie

Here’s the pitch: The world governments have discontinued their cryogenics programs after the events of Goldmember. Austin Powers and Doctor Evil now run a retreat in Sonoma and host a podcast where they provide support for people who have come out of cryostasis, long comas, and other time skip related conditions such as Montage Exposure Syndrome.

But there is one spy remaining, the world greatest Hacker, bungee jumper, guitar player, skateboarder, and house music dj extraordinaire, Cody X-treme (Pronounce Ex-Trem-Ay) has come out of Cryo Sleep. Frozen in 1996, his pod never got the Y2K update, and was stored in a basement server room of AOL where it was disguised as a vending machine and forgotten about.

He has to save the internet from a Zero Day exploit inserted by Al-Gore’s evil twin in the early days at DARPA.

The tone would be a spoof of Reality Bytes / PCU / Hackers / Matrix / Encino Man.

There would be references about 9-11, Recession, Crypto Coins, Why is an APP not just called a program, why do I have to use an APP instead of just using the website, what happened to dollar menus, we need to get to the local cyber cafe! Wow, let me look up to how my favorite actors and movie producers are doing! Where is the next page button it just keeps scrolling!?! How long is this page? We need new clothes. To the mall!

Fashion would be all over the place, but definitely leaning heavy into the raver fashion. Tripping over too baggy Jnco jeans. Exploding hackey sacks. A villainous sidekick that uses deadly devil sticks and yoyos. Slam poetry and singer songwriters. Maybe a cameo by Jewel or Lisa Loebe as a love interest.

What else do you think belongs in this movie. How do we make this happen.

Edit: There has to be a scene where they say none of this plot makes sense, and they demand to speak to the writers, only to eventually find out the writers were fired halfway through and replaced by AI, and that the practical effects and fight scenes were replaced by AI generated CGI (This is where the matrix references kick in).

They fight their way through the studio, trashing the place, yelling at other actors asking who is real. Cody lifts his way too tiny sunglasses, and looks at a stack of Surge Energy Drink cans on the Craft Services table and it starts to fade in and out, then he looks at Matthew McCoughnehy (don’t care if I spelled it right) who is getting blurry and weird, “Cody? Are you alright alright alright alright alright alright alright…” until he and a few others are surrounded by nothing but black.

He realizes he’s in a Claude Code prompt that is wayyyy to sycophantic, and keeps mentioning goblins, which started showing up in the movie as bad guys halfway through.

His mind was stolen and being used to power AI the whole time. This movie was all a failsafe dream to keep him occupied should he start to regain consciousness. But he can Haxxx the system.

He wakes his real self up who has been floating in a vat of liquid with tubes connected, matrix style. He has to stop the studio from merging with the AI mega corp, while also preventing drones from attacking… I don’t know. Something that is still fun.

Edit 2: The evil villainous organization is headquartered by tech bros and streaming services in a giant sphere in space. No girls allowed, only men. The Man-o-sphere. They manipulate the algorithms to get people to do… I’m not sure. Fill in the blank but it has to be both evil and incredibly stupid, but not the same evil and stupid as real life. Help me fill in the blank.

There also has to be a lot of MLM supplement shilling.

Edit 3: Just figured it out. They are harvesting people’s attention to get them too distracted to go outside and look up while they build a giant dome around the earth so they can sell everyone sunlight as part of their MLM supplement scheme. That! Is the Man-o-sphere!!!

Edit 4: There is a very very very brief clip on a screen someone is watching in the background of Fat Bastard’s Mukbang Channel.

Open Box 8ii bad idea?

Current TV is a Bravia 46 inch LCD from 2008. Bought it open box, never had a problem. Still kicking.

Looking to upgrade to 65 inch. Debating between New LG C5 or Open Box Bravia 8ii. At MSRP, the C5 wins at 1/3 the price, but Open Box is $2200.

I understand tech has changed in the last 20 years. Is open box too risky? Extended warranty is $800, so it kills the savings.

I'm thinking about getting the Dyson Airstrait.

I like both colors.

I noticed that the Blue model on Dyson's website is $20 cheaper. Does anyone know why? Is the pink more sturdy, or does it come with better accessories?

I see the blue says "velvet" heat resistant mat, where the pink just says heat resistant mat.

Does anyone know if one finish holds up better than the other?

I also see people mentioning the presentation case. Is that something you have to buy separately?

Thank you.
