TODAY’S SKETCH | QUEZON MEMORIAL 🇵🇭

On Quezon Day, today’s sketch looks at one of Quezon City’s most iconic landmarks—the Quezon Memorial Shrine, designed by Filipino architect Federico Ilustre of the Bureau of Public Works.

Rising 66 meters, its three monumental pylons represent Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, crowned by three Art Deco mourning angels holding sampaguita wreaths.

At its base is the Museo ni Manuel Quezon, preserving photographs, documents, personal belongings, and memorabilia from the life and political career of President Manuel L. Quezon. Beneath the shrine lies the mausoleum, where Quezon and his wife, Aurora Aragon Quezon, are interred.

A monument, a museum, and a place of remembrance—standing at the heart of the city he helped establish.

Today’s Sketch ✏️

Panorama House

Tagaytay, Philippines

Jim Caumeron Design | 2019

A compact weekend retreat that creates its own panorama.

With only a 100 sqm footprint, Jim Caumeron Design carved two powerful horizontal cuts into the house—bringing in views, daylight, and the breeze while creating a sense of spaciousness within a modest footprint.

I particularly love how the architecture turns air and light into part of the design. The sunken living area frames the park outside, while carefully positioned openings encourage passive cooling through the house.

A quiet, sculptural response to the Filipino climate—and a reminder that sometimes, less house can mean more experience.

What are you thoughts?

TODAY’S SKETCH

" GT Tower, Makati"

One of Makati’s unmistakable vertical landmarks.

Designed by G.F. Formoso & Partners in collaboration with Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), the tower’s sharp geometry and reflective façade capture a certain image of Makati: ambitious, dense, efficient, always moving upward.

But the city has another relationship with water.

When heavy rains arrive, the same streets beneath these towers can quickly become difficult to navigate.

Makati’s floods today remind us that a city is not defined only by how high it builds, but also by how well it manages what happens at ground level.

Have you been inside this building? How does it feel working here?

Navitas Haus — Poblacion, Makati

https://navitaslife.com.ph/

Architects: CELLLO Design Collective

A 50 year old Poblacion home given new life through adaptive reuse—transformed into an experiential, community-centric space that feels fresh, organic, and welcoming.

A reminder that good architecture doesn’t always mean building new. Sometimes, it means reimagining what is already there.

-Interesting curvy form! You dont normally see high rises like that here in the PH...

-Have you seen this building along EDSA? How is it like working/working there?

Whenever I see this building it reminds me of the stretch of EDSA always with heavy traffic. 🤣

"House In Sampaloc"

Heritage/Ancestral Houses

Before corner glass windows, limewash finishes & "WPC" clad modern houses, there were homes like these.

Quiet witnesses to generations of stories, they stand with weathered walls, wooden windows, and memories that no modern house can replace. Every crack, every shadow, every line is a reminder that a city's soul isn't found only in its newest buildings—but in the ones that refuse to be forgotten.

This sketch is my small tribute to old Manila and the beauty hidden in its everyday streets.

"Architecture is not just about what we build next, but what we choose to remember."

"Ayala Triangle Gardens Tower 2"

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), in collaboration with Leandro V. Locsin Partners as Architect of Record and landscape architects AECOM, the project reflects both international design excellence and a strong sensitivity to the Philippine urban context.

Architect's Notes:

-Height: 195 meters (40 storeys)

-LEED Gold-targeted sustainable design

-The tower occupies a minimal footprint to preserve and expand Makati's green open space.

-Its custom-designed façade mullions are shaped to capture and diffuse natural light throughout the interiors.

-The landscaped podium seamlessly connects the building with the historic Ayala Triangle Gardens, inviting pedestrians to move through—not merely around—the architecture.

Have you visited this building? How is it integrated to the park below?

Reality Check for every Pinoy Adult... (saw this on X, had to share here)

The highest form of wealth is not a number in your bank account or even your net worth. It is the ability to wake up in the morning and do whatever you want, with whoever you want, for as long as you want.

Many people chase money, but they do not use it to buy the real signature of wealth. Freedom.

The only real goal of finance is to buy back your freedom. Everything else is a mirage.

What you want is time, autonomy, and control over your life.

Research has shown over and over that material things themselves do not satisfy. A bigger house. A nicer car. A bigger salary.

These things look glamorous, but if you are still under the control of someone else, they become nothing but an expensive prison.

Many people trade their autonomy away without realizing it. They are fixated on the wrong currency.

They take a higher paying job that owns their schedule.

They buy a house that chains them to decades of mortgage.

They build a lifestyle that requires them to keep earning at the same rate just to maintain it.

As a result, they make good money, but they still feel caged.

Others allow other people to take them to a lifestyle they cannot sustain without that person.

Or they win lovers by promising to keep them on a certain lifestyle.

Which becomes an indefinite loan they must keep paying, reversing the whole idea of freedom.

Money is never the goal. Freedom is.

The goal is to have options. The power to say no. The ability to walk away from things you do not like.

It does not matter what you drive or where you live. If you can afford to choose your life and your associations, you are wealthy.

Wealth is not about what you show off, but what you are capable of.
