TODAY’S SKETCH | Artemio Reyes Residence, 1959

Araneta Avenue, Quezon City

A little piece of the "Space Age" along Araneta Avenue.

Designed by architect Marcos C. de Guzman, the Artemio Reyes Residence is one of those rare Metro Manila buildings that seems to have arrived from another time—or perhaps from the future imagined in the 1950s.

Its architecture plays with the familiar flying-saucer form: sweeping curves, dramatic cantilevers, thin projecting planes and a strong sense of horizontality. There is an almost weightless quality to the composition, as if the upper volumes were hovering rather than sitting heavily on the ground.

What I find interesting is the optimism behind the architecture. Postwar modernism was not always about the rigid box. The Space Age allowed architects to be playful and experimental, borrowing imagery from aviation, rockets and the excitement surrounding new technology.

Today, surrounded by the visual clutter and density of Araneta Avenue, the Reyes Residence feels even more unusual—a surviving reminder of a period when Filipino architects were willing to imagine what the architecture of tomorrow might look like.

Sometimes the future we imagined in the past is more interesting than the future we actually built.

BAHAY NA LUPA

The first fully Rammed Earth House in the Philippines

I had the chance to visit "Bahay na Lupa" during its construction last year. It was fascinating to see the rammed earth walls and architectural forms slowly come together — witnessing the beauty of architecture in the making.

What makes this project even more meaningful is its connection to Regenerative Architecture — an approach that goes beyond minimizing environmental impact, and asks how architecture can give back to the land, work with nature, and create a more meaningful relationship between people and their surroundings.

As Ar. Ronnie Yumang often advocates, architecture should not simply take from the earth, but learn from it.

A quiet appreciation of earth, material, craftsmanship, and the possibilities of building in harmony with nature.

TODAY’S SKETCH | IVATAN HOUSE

A quick study of the traditional Ivatan house of Batanes—a beautiful example of architecture shaped by climate and place.

Built to withstand the strong typhoons of the region, Ivatan houses traditionally use thick stone walls, cogon roofs, and compact forms that provide strength and protection from the elements.

What I find fascinating is how the house is not simply designed to look beautiful—it is designed to survive.

Architecture, at its best, is a conversation between people, materials, culture, and nature.

Tagô — Mañosa Properties, Tagaytay

Tagô means “hidden”—an apt name for this tucked-away residential community in the hills of Tagaytay.

What makes Tagô interesting to sketch is how the Mañosa philosophy transforms the traditional bahay kubo into a contemporary home without losing its Filipino character.

The architecture responds to Tagaytay’s cool climate through wide openings, open-plan spaces, deep roof overhangs, sunshades, and natural ventilation. Bamboo, adobe stone, woven materials, coconut, and responsibly sourced wood bring the landscape and local craftsmanship into the architecture.

I particularly like how the design doesn't treat sustainability as something added afterward—it is embedded in the way the house breathes, shades itself, uses local materials, and connects indoor and outdoor spaces.

Another beautiful Mañosa detail is the señorita staircase, a contemporary interpretation of traditional Filipino house design that makes the home comfortable for different generations.

I wanted to explore the building’s forms and volumes—how the different masses stack, shift, and come together to create its distinctive silhouette.

Nothing too detailed today. Just a quick study of the proportions, lines, and overall character of the building.

Sometimes, a few minutes with a pen is enough to understand a building a little better.

The tallest building in the Philippines 🇵🇭

Metrobank Center, formerly known as the Federal Land Tower and also known as the Metrobank Financial Tower, is a 66-story mixed-use supertall skyscraper in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Metro Manila. Standing at a total height of 318 m, it is the tallest building and structure in the Philippines, surpassing the previous record holder, the PBCom Tower, by 59 m

The building's pinnacle height is 318 m while its height up to its roof is around 259.1 m.

Wong & Ouyang, as well as Casas + Architects Inc. were the architectural firms behind the Metrobank Center. Ove Arup & Partners was responsible for the wind, structural, and seismic engineering of the building. Arup devised its damp outrigger system to make the building resistant to seismic shock and wind. Concrete outrigger walls were installed in the Metrobank Center's two mechanical floors.

Belson House — EDSA, Mandaluyong

A familiar piece of EDSA’s commercial streetscape, Belson House stands at 271 EDSA, Mandaluyong, in the Wack-Wack area. Its address has long been associated with offices and businesses along one of Metro Manila’s busiest urban corridors.

One of its long-standing occupants is Belson Securities, Inc., a Filipino-owned stock brokerage established in 1969 and a registered broker-dealer and Philippine Stock Exchange member.

Interestingly, the building also houses companies connected to construction, engineering, and building materials, making Belson House a small snapshot of the diverse business ecosystem that has grown along EDSA.

Notice the interesting Spiral Staircase giving the building its iconic facade.

TODAY’S SKETCH | QUEZON MEMORIAL 🇵🇭

On Quezon Day, today’s sketch looks at one of Quezon City’s most iconic landmarks—the Quezon Memorial Shrine, designed by Filipino architect Federico Ilustre of the Bureau of Public Works.

Rising 66 meters, its three monumental pylons represent Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, crowned by three Art Deco mourning angels holding sampaguita wreaths.

At its base is the Museo ni Manuel Quezon, preserving photographs, documents, personal belongings, and memorabilia from the life and political career of President Manuel L. Quezon. Beneath the shrine lies the mausoleum, where Quezon and his wife, Aurora Aragon Quezon, are interred.

A monument, a museum, and a place of remembrance—standing at the heart of the city he helped establish.

Jim Caumeron Design | 2019

A compact weekend retreat that creates its own panorama.

With only a 100 sqm footprint, Jim Caumeron Design carved two powerful horizontal cuts into the house—bringing in views, daylight, and the breeze while creating a sense of spaciousness within a modest footprint.

I particularly love how the architecture turns air and light into part of the design. The sunken living area frames the park outside, while carefully positioned openings encourage passive cooling through the house.

A quiet, sculptural response to the Filipino climate—and a reminder that sometimes, less house can mean more experience.

" GT Tower, Makati"

One of Makati’s unmistakable vertical landmarks.

Designed by G.F. Formoso & Partners in collaboration with Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), the tower’s sharp geometry and reflective façade capture a certain image of Makati: ambitious, dense, efficient, always moving upward.

But the city has another relationship with water.

When heavy rains arrive, the same streets beneath these towers can quickly become difficult to navigate.

Makati’s floods today remind us that a city is not defined only by how high it builds, but also by how well it manages what happens at ground level.
