What is your opinion on the law requiring husband's permission for married women to get abortion in TW?

What is your opinion? Should it be kept or should it be struck down ASAP? Executive has been trying to take it down since 2003 but no progress made.

Why do some countries (like Taiwan) have way more egalitarian suicide male/female rates?

Yet some feminists claim that "It is only cause men are more likely to succeed" when there are countries(like taiwan) where "succeed" rates are so similar...

Thoughts?

Is SG one of the rare places that being female is better than being male? How do SG males even stand all the discrimination?

Taiwanese woman here. I see lots of taiwanese folk on the internet complaining about female privlege but I did a research and seriously sg seems like another level. I wrote this post in shock cause growing up in TW i already thought I was very lucky to live in such an egalitarian society, now looking at laws from many countries, especially yours, it seems like it isn't true

NS is 2 years in SG,very low pay, cannot defer for college, while SG has no external threats. Seems like a punishment for being male.

Taiwan has huge threat, 1 year for men born after 2005,4 months for men born before 2005, can deduct days off if taking defense lessons in hs/college, can defer up to 33, pay is much much higher, very close to the median wage in taiwan.

A survey in 2023 had 41% of taiwanese women agree on including females in conscription;while in SG, only 22% agree.

Exemption rate is real high in tw, with flat feet, myopia and obese being exemption reasons. My husband didn't serve in NS(Also taiwanese) due to mild aspergers

SG alimony is only for females or males incapacitated. In taiwan, alimony is exactly the same for both sides.

Husband's maintenance duty exists even during an intact marriage in SG. In Taiwan the maintenance duty is gender neutral.

In SG, if a parent dies, an unmarried daughter of any age is legally entitled to apply for maintenance from the deceased parent's estate. In contrast, an adult son can only apply if he is under 21 years old or physically/mentally incapacitated. In Taiwan it is completely gender neutral.

unwed biological mothers automatically receive paid statutory maternity leave and government subsidies. Unwed biological fathers receive zero paid statutory paternity leave or government cash gifts, as paternal rights require a legal marriage to the mother at the time of birth. In Taiwan,as long as there is legal acknowledgement, males get the same rights and benefits for having the child as the unwed mother.

Recruitment Expos only for females. Mind blowing since Taiwan has none of these. If someone planned something like that in tw they would be fined by the govt.

Abortion without spousal consent in SG. In taiwan, abortion requires spousal consent and doctors who perform abortions to married women without spousal consent could be jailed up to 5 years.(I hate it too, i wish abortion no longer requires spousal consent, but just pointing out the difference)

Caning only for males.

Corporal punishment in schools only for males. Taiwan used to have corporal punishment pre 2006, for both sexes, and as a Taiwanese woman, I received corporal punishment too intact as a kid with late diagnosed aspergers behavior I was usually treated the worst.(wasn't diagnosed yet back then)

Adoption of female kids is banned for males in SG. here in taiwan its legal for single men to adopt female kids

SG has hair length limit for males only in schools, jails and other professions. Taiwan had hair length limit before 2005 ish in schools but applies to both genders, female hair length limit was usually no longer than Bob-cuts.

R@pe in SG is defined as male against female, while in Taiwan its both ways

Males in SG are banned from taking care of young kids in SG kindergartens. In Taiwan its totally legal.

SG has very strong DEI hirings to boost female participation but is not very fair for males. In taiwan even if corporations do DEI they barley touch the crust of it.(I mean DEI hiring at companies, not progressive laws)

Singapore has nanny to take care of in-laws while in most of the rest of asia (including taiwan where i live),wives of their sons are expected to take care of grown ups in family.

Heck,Tax reductions for mothers and fathers are very different in SG. In Taiwan the exact same applies to fathers and mothers

Elective egg freezing legal, but sperm freezing not legal in SG. In taiwan both are legal.

In sg female children have to sign agreement if they are ok with being inspected by male doctor. Male children cannot choose. For Taiwan there is no gender consent rules. Only parents can "request" they want to be examined by doctors of specific gender.

HPV vaccinations only free for females in SG. Taiwan made it free for males in 2025.

How can you singaporean males even stand all these double standards????

Me and my husband's love story, from growing up neurodivergent in East Asia.

I'm a Taiwanese 29F, have a husband (Also taiwanese, 27M).I'm an only child. My dad went missing when I was 3, mom got abusive at me when I was a child due to depression. Classmates mocked me for my stimming, the way I talk, me being interested on numbers and astronomy as a child.

Taiwan didn't ban corporal punishment until late 2006 and people were very unhelpful and not understanding towards special needs students, so even my teachers gave me the worst punishments.

I got depressed over all of that suff around 5\~6th grade and wanted to end my life back then. When I was in 7th grade, I was severely beaten up by mom one night and school counselors helped me. They had a lot of procedures and then sent me to a children's home. One of the social workers took me to the hospital to get psychiatric check and I was diagnosed with depression and aspergers'.

It was real bad for my early teens, all I could do was read more books and write more stuff.

Later on when I was 15 I attended lessons for autistic teens in Taipei and I met this boy, 2 years younger than me,diagnosed with aspergers at 11, who had this angst carried cause he wasn't happy about taiwans hierarchical system and rote learning education. We talked a lot about our values and writings. We ended up exchanging our numbers and we met each other after school.

I was in Taipei first girls' high school, the best girls' hs in Taipei, fierce academic competition, but my depression only got less and less miserable due to finally having a friend that truly understands me. We started going on trips.

When I was 18 and he was 16 ,when i finished hs, we started dating. He was still in chien kuo hs (best boys hs in taipei) I loved taking him out to different restraunts, paying full date night bills with the money I earnt as a tutor, even brought him on many different trips.

I remember when I was in my first year of college, I was joining an event hosted by his hs club, and the club leader scolded him into tears which I stood up and defended him.

I studied engineering(materials science) at NTU , best uni in taipei and later on he entered NTU too, studying accounting. We met daily. I moved out of childrens house at 20, doing multiple tutoring jobs and using disability subsides to pay for rent. He moved in with me when I was 21 and he was 19, and he did the cleaning, cooking, laundry etc. We both didn't drive. Taipei is easily commutable by MRT.

I started working in a semiconductor R&D position and two years later, he started working at a trade company.

We married each other in 2025.

Got married last year, want to have kids, but feel weird about abortion laws

Taiwanese 29F here , work as a semiconductor R&D. married to 27M husband who is an accountant last year(also from taiwan) . we met when I was 15 and he was 13 in a support group for autistic teens.( Both of us are autistic), started dating when i was 18 and he was 16. Married last year. Want kids (I want kids more than my husband does but he is ok with kids too)

Where I live in Taiwan, abortion is allowed up to 24 weeks in 6 criteria for married women

1.) The pregnant person or spouse has hereditary, communicable, or psychiatric disease detrimental to reproductive health.

2.)Anyone within the fourth degree of kinship of herself or her spouse acquires a hereditary disease detrimental to reproductive health.

3.)By medical consideration, pregnancy or delivery may cause life threatening risk or detrimental to her physical health.

4.)By medical consideration, risk of teratogenesis may present for the fetus.

5.)Pregnancy as a result of rape or incest

6.)Pregnancy or childbirth is likely to affect her mental health or family life.

If a married woman wants an abortion that comes from the 1st\\\~5th criteria, spousal permission is not needed.

Yet abortions that only fit the 6th criteria needs spousal permission to perform it.

The majority of cases are from the 6th criteria, since the 6th criteria is very vague, it basically means "every abortion outside of abortions of that fit the first 5 criterias"

There has been drafts to fix the law since 2003, but reform stalled since.

The law is actually enforced, with pregnant women serving jail time of less than 6 months, and doctors performing those abortions serving jail time up to 5 years.

Divorce cannot happen without both parties consent, or proving to the court that the other party is abusive etc and have the court rule it.

Therefore some husbands in taiwan demand entire share of money after divorce or he wouldn't allow abortion

(Taiwan law puts all assets earning before marriage as strictly the person's own property, but the money earnt AFTER marriage is put together and split OR one party could agree to give it up)

Also many women choose to overdrink to severely harm their health to receive unconsented abortion

ID has marraige status here btw, they will check your ID.

I want children and I trust my husband but it just feels weird that someone else has control over my pregnancy it feels weird. I look at posts (ghost stories) on local taiwanese forums like dcard and it just feels weird. That is why I spammed many posts in different subreddits.

Just a little rant here.

Do mind, Taiwan has an online gender war too, but most politics are focused on relations with China. Online gender wars are mostly about whether women should be introduced into conscription, who pays for the bill on a date(i used to pay full bill when i dated my partner), and sexual harassment. Rarely its about the ridiculous abortion law.

What do you think of requiring husband consent for abortion?

What is your opinion on this?

p.s: online gender wars in taiwan are about paying on dates, conscription, sexual violence, rarely about this. Taiwan has a 40% female percentage in legislative and had a female president.
