Why do some “friends” act so differently online and in real life?

I’ve been trying to understand something about friendships. How can someone clearly dislike you or talk badly about you behind your back in real life, hide things from you, hurt you or treat you differently when you’re actually around them
But then online they’re completely different. They’re constantly sending you messages, reels and memes, checking on you and acting like they genuinely enjoy talking to you. Sometimes if you only knew them through the way they act online, you’d probably think they really liked you and cared about you
That’s the part I don’t understand. How can someone’s behavior be so different online compared to how they actually treat you in real life? Do they genuinely enjoy interacting with you online despite how they feel about you in person, or is the online behavior just fake? And if they really dislike you, why put so much effort into talking to you online?
I’m genuinely curious how people can separate these two sides of a friendship so much
