Advice for dealing with a committee member going feral
US/New England.
I live in a town of ~30k where I am an unpaid appointed member of a town commission dealing with environmental issues, outreach, and as an advisory to Zoning and Wetlands boards. I have been a member for a few years now and enjoy being able to make a little bit of a difference to make our town a better place to live. This is a commission that is statutorily limited to the number of any particular political party can be a member of (the rest unenrolled) in order to foster equality and balance in opinions and action.
An issue has just started to fester, however, that I am not sure how to react as it plays out.
There is one member that routinely sends out group emails to the rest of the commission. They are not the only one, and up until now every note/link has been related to areas our commission has some level of local purview. The most recent message, however, went off the political deep end. It was images and links regarding certain taxation issues in other States that even the most deluded of participants would realize is about nine area codes away from anything we handle. Trying to be as tactful as possible, I sent as a group reply:
"What relation to Commission business are we to be considering here?"
to which another member responded:
"I agree with this comment. I hope everyone has a pleasant weekend, try to stay cool!"
In response, the original sender went completely unhinged. I won't post the full response, but there was talk of the "extortion by the crooked and corrupt, criminal, communist, socialist, entitled, marxist, demonic, treasonous, narcissist, state government psychopaths who insanely believe they all walk on water"
So yeah, that...
Now, this Commissioner had already asked about the procedure for resigning at the last meeting, and was given a comprehensive response. My question to everyone here is, should I respond to this with something along the lines of this:
"I am sorry to hear that you are considering resigning from the Commission. As xxxxxx (Town employee that runs our meetings) had detailed the process for this at the most recent meeting, I am sure they would be more than willing to review this with you."
I know it seems somewhat passive aggressive and I realize nothing is going to piss this person off more than remaining 100% professional, but I still have the urge to send it regardless.
