Building a writerDeck for editing.

Building a writerDeck for editing.

To start this off, I plan to pick up a Freewrite in the near future as a first draft device. I have two typewriters that I love to pieces, but I'm in a masters program. It's one that's closely related to creative writing, so I need to be able to draft work quickly. Also I'm supposed to start work on a thesis / book, and I'm going to have to turn in pages. So working with a typewriter, although fun, isn't practical.

So the Freewrite will work for me, but the re-writing, the editing, correcting, re-arranging text, I'm going to need a more featured word processor, and ideally I would like it to be as distraction free as possible. Originally I was playing with the idea of finding an old word processor machine like this one, but bringing it into a modern process could be difficult, expensive (I'm already going to be shelling out for the Freewrite after all), and might not be reliable because of the old hardware. I was also thinking about building a machine from Raspberry PI — but it felt like when it was all said and done it was too much work.

So I started thinking about what I would want in this machine -

  • Cloud connectivity, where my work is automatically backed up, and accessible on other machines. Also I'd want to be able to drop in a couple of files from my work computer if something comes up.
  • Able to read any research files, PDFs, images, etc.
  • Shut off from the rest of the internet, no Wikipedia, Google, no online dictionaries, AI chatbots, social media, and so on.
  • However, it can access Apple Music or Spotify, and the CMS for my blog.
  • A modern word processor. So I can copy, paste, rearrange, create copies, export to different formats, etc. Also I'd like to be able to open more than one document at a time.
  • Easy to set up, nice keyboard, good screen, The screen doesn't need to be e-ink, but it does need to have a nice clean resolution. Also it would be nice if I could have some fun customizations like wallpaper. So it goes without saying I want this WriterDeck to be more graphical.

Obviously, starting off with an old laptop is the beginning. I have a 2015 Macbook Air kicking around. Except for the battery, it's in great shape.

I was thinking WriterDeckOs, and it's a good project, but I didn't feel like it would work for me here.

So then I installed Linux Mint. I got it on the Airbook easily enough, but getting it to install apps and customizing it to be what I needed was a pain in the neck. I didn't want to spend my time fighting with the machine when I should be working.

So I remembered that I was playing around with ChromeOS Flex a year or so ago, and it's installable on the old Airbook. I realized if I install it, and if I use a "child" profile. Like a profile with parental locks, I can lock everything out but Google Drive, Google Docs, my blog, and Apple Music. I can then set up a shared folder with my main Google account so I can easily move files in and out of that ecosystem. Also when I do get the Freewrite, it'll be pretty easy to get the files onto the editing writerDeck.

And as a bonus, its a real laptop, so I can have more than one screen or hook up a mechanical keyboard if I want / need to. Also since it's ChromeOS if something happens to the Airbook, in a pinch I can just get a Chromebook, or install ChromeOs Flex onto a different laptop and pick up where I left off.

Installing ChromeOS Flex was really easy, it took me an hour or so to set it up on the old Airbook and then maybe another 30 or 40 minutes to get the user account set up. All I have to do is remember to ditch my phone so I'm not tempted to unlock reddit, or another time waster.

So if you made it this far, thanks for reading. I thought this could help someone out.

TL;DR: I made a writerDeck from an old Mac Airbook, and ChromeOS Flex.

Generic Vyvanse Effectiveness

So I've been on the generic Vyvanse, lisdexamfetamine 40mg for just over a year now. I skip weekends, unless I have to work on a final project for a class for my masters. I have off from work on Fridays during the summer, so I skip it then too.

Sometimes though, I've noticed that it's completely ineffective. My mood regulation is out of whack, and my attention span is total shit. Is this normal? I read somewhere that there's issues with generic medications, but I don't know. I'm getting them from legit pharmacies.

I've also lost a ton of weight in the past year, so I'd imagine it'd be a little stronger in my system. But I'm not a doctor, I'm not sure if that's how it works.

Anyway, does anyone else have this issue when it comes to their medication?

It may or not belong here or it might have been done, but...

I didn't like how she >!resolved the major conflict, for the same reasons why I didn't like how Superman did in Man of Steel.!< The action was fun, Millie did a good job acting as Kara. She read the script and understood the assignment.

The plot line was a little derivative maybe, but I was still invested. All around it was a good way to blow two hours in air conditioning with some movie theater popcorn. FFS, we're not talking prestige entertainment here — it's a superhero movie and you're not supposed to take it that seriously.

Also, I don't want to talk about Millie's looks (I'm not exactly gorgeous here) but MIllie isn't ugly at all. She may not be a traditional beauty like Helen Slater or Melissa Benoist — but she's such a cute person and I think it served her well here. At the same time though, this version of Supergirl wasn't about her love life, or her sex appeal. It's quite literally about a person who lost her home and is trying to come to grips with that.

Take this how you will. I'm not trying to white knight Millie or this movie, but I don't think either has been treated fairly.

Subletting Resources?

Hey All,

Me and my partner are looking to possibly own an apartment, but it would be nice to get a little extra income. Our current apartment is in Bay Ridge, near the ferry, express bus, and one stop from the express train. We're also near three other bus lines that are really useful.

It's also a one bedroom, with a nice view of the harbor, and we pay $1125, rent stabilized. I think we could rent out the apartment for a bit more, probably 1,700 or 1,900. We don't want to be greedy, but we do want the extra money for mortgage.

I'm not sure what to ask, but if you were in a similar situation, and if you wanted to sublet where would you start? And, what's the easiest way to sublet an apartment?

Thanks in advance!

Viynl Sticker paper for a home laser printer?

Hey all,

I know this could be a bit out there, but I'm looking to make some stickers. I have a black and white laser printer (a Brother HL-L2405W). Can anyone recommend any glossy sticker paper I can run through it? I'm not sure if vinyl is out of the question.

I need it to label a few things and print out some personal designs / slogans, nothing too special.

Thanks!

Hey all,

I have a Trek FX2 (2017 I think). I like it, it's probably the best bike I owned, and maybe it's me, or the position that I'm riding in but it's a bit of a bear up hills and when I get into head winds. Also the drive train gets out of wack way too easy. I'm a little tired of waiting for the absolute perfect conditions to ride, and frequent trips to the shop.

I'm thinking about looking for a vintage road bike, I never had one before but I hear that they're lighter and easier to get up hills and cut through headwinds. Also, I'm thinking that the mechanics might be simpler and are easy to adjust and repair myself. I really would love to learn how to be my own mechanic, so simple would be great.

My weight is about 240, I'm on a weight loss journey and I want to bike more to help out with that. I live in NYC, so I'll be riding mostly on streets. Also I would like to do longer distances and maybe do some bike touring.

Am I looking in the right direction, or should I consider something else?

Any advice would be great!

Edit:
*Also forgot to mention, I'm trying to do this on a budget. I'm hoping to spend no more than $500, maybe a little more if it's in perfect condition.
