Hard decision between 2 Taylors

Hard decision between 2 Taylors

I have been looking for a 14CE series, preferably a 414CE the last few weeks. I have bought a couple of Martin's from Empire Music so I looked to see what they have available.

They have a Trade in promo going right now and I have a Les Paul Modern that I don't like even though it's a beautiful guitar.

I am stuck between this guitar, a new but heavily discounted 2023 Custom Select 714CE (original price $4499) that I would get 23% discount on top of the already discounted price, OR..

A 2026 414CE standard. They both would be $2700 but the 414CE would only be discounted 15%.

My brain is saying 714CE but I have to wonder why it has gone un-sold for 3 years...

The options if allowed...

2006 410CE thoughts

I can get a 2006 410CE for $1000. Any thoughts on the year, the guitar and price? I have been looking for 14 series Taylor to accompany my 2 000 Martins, but I see this guitar been for sale for a while.

I would like to play it first but trying to gauge thoughts before I decide to make the effort.

Built this Mini Tele for 9 year old Nephew

I have no idea if he will even play it but it was a fun build and it’s perfect size for him. I was surprised how good it sounds hooked up to a Boss headphone amp that I m giving him also.

The last pic is size comparison to my first build.

If you were a 9 year old boy.....

I have 2 guitar kits that I can build for my 9 year old nephew. I can't decide which one to do.

  1. Solo Guitar Mini-Tele with a 22.5 scale and I have a Boss headphone amp for him

  2. Solo Parlor Acoustic with a 25.5 scale. He would not need a amp or anything with that.

I plan on finishing one of them and giving it to him on the 4th of July while they are visiting us.

Parlor guitar strings for a 9 year old

I am building my nephew a Parlor size guitar and wondering what size strings I should use. He is good size kid, but he is only 9 and never played guitar.

My plan is to have it finished and give it to him on the Fourth of July. His favorite color is blue so doing a custom clear coated blue stain body and headstock.

I also had water slide decals made for the headstock. His name is Austin and nickname is Aut, so I did AUTEEO then Austin 7-4-26

New TMP. Fender FR or Studio monitors?

I just received my TMP on Tuesday and have played it through my headphones and into the front of my TM Twin Reverb.

I am hooked on the TMP, so I am going to move away from the TMTR even though it's only a couple months old.

I only play at home in my office/guitar room which is about 10x10. I will probably play quite a bit through headphones but need to decide on a Fender FR (12 or 212) or studio monitor like the Kali LP-6 v2 or Adam T5V for when I want to play without headphones.

I am also going to upgrade the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x to Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO X headphones.

Any thoughts on FRFR vs Studio monitor?

New TMP today.

I just got my TMP and of course I I had just bought a TM Twin Reverb a couple months ago. I ran my cable into the front of the clean side of my amp and played around with the pre-sets and came away impressed. I was not bypassing the amp in the pre-sets.

Is this a problem? It sounds really good but am I missing out by not using say a FRFR?

It seems to me that using the TMP on the clean side basically does what a FRFR does. Am I correct? I had my amp EQ all at 5. I did plug it into the Vibrato side with effects zeroed out, but it really didn't sound quite as good.

I will say the TMP has already put a huge smile on my face! Best purchase in while.

Gilmour Tribute is done(for now)

I finished up the build this weekend. I’ll say they CS Fat 59, CS 69 and Senior Duncan SSL definitely has a different voicing. I did string it with NYXL 9-42. The pick guard and pickups came with Gilmour Signature GHS Boomers 10-48. I’m not sure if that would make a big tone difference or not.

I just ordered a TMP, be here tomorrow

I kind of had a crappy day yesterday, so I said screw it and treated myself.

I have been watching videos like crazy to try to be ready. I plan on using it through my Tone Master Twin Reverb with the 4-cable system. I also have studio monitor headphones that are going to make my wife very happy. Any tips?

App issues

I have been unable to load money on my app for 2 weeks now. It keeps saying it's declined but no declined charges on my apple card. I have always used Apple Pay to reload the app, but it won't allow me add funds.

I've even tried another card, and I get the same thing. I messaged DB customer service and finally got a response that it should be fixed and they added 2 free drinks. Well, the 2 drinks are on the app but still can't add funds.

I've deleted and downloaded the app numerous times, and I left it off my iPhone for 48 hours the last time per customer service suggestion. It did not help.

Gilmour Strat opinion

I am building a Gilmour Strat. The last piece of the puzzle is being delivered today, an acrylic pick guard with all the correct pickups, 4” trem bar, green letter knobs etc.

Here is my dilemma. I bought a Warmoth roasted maple neck and it’s much darker than it looked in the pic. Now I’m not sure to use it or not.

Thoughts? The pic with roasted maple is from YouTuber Landon Bailey and the other one is a Custom shop replica from Sweetwater. My neck is about as dark or darker than this one. I found a vintage tinted neck with a neck profile I like on EBay but can’t decide if I should get it

My first build. Lessons learned

This was my first build, a Solo Tele kit. One thing I would not do again is have the veneer, It is just too thin. You can see light spot on the left side. The veneer lifted despite being very careful.

I was able to save it but was a bit dye shy on the part so it ended lighter. Overall I am happy and would welcome constructive criticism on the fretwork. That was the most stressful and enjoyable part for me. I know it could be better but they are very smooth.

I am doing a Solo Spalted Maple Telecaster with a paper thin veneer. After applying a thin coat of sanding sealer I noticed the area I marked in the first pic bubbling in places.

In a panic I grabbed my heat gun and stole some parchment paper from the wife’s baking cabinet.

I heated the bubble areas up with the heat gun to hopefully activate the glue and used the parchment to apply pressure rubbing back and forth across the bubbles.

It seemed to work but I am leaving it alone for a few days. The 2nd pic is last night after cleaning with Naptha showing what I hope it to look like when finished.

This is my first Tele after saying I didn’t like them. Then I went to see Jason Isbell and that all changed. I was going to get the Jason Tele but I don’t like a 7.25 radius, but that’s the look I wanted.

I was ready to pull the trigger on Tele Ultra Luxe but at the last minute I went on Guitar Center used and saw this Ultra in Plano, TX. I called them and was told it was just traded and was basically like new. They weren’t kidding, it was some pick marks on the pick guard but that’s it.

It looks and sounds amazing especially after a new set of NYXL 9-42 strings and a good cleaning.
