Raphael Lea’i’s hat trick just sent his club Central Coast to the first OFC Champions League final in their history

Raphael Lea’i’s hat trick just sent his club Central Coast to the first OFC Champions League final in their history

just weeks ago, I made this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOldZealand/comments/1v9loc2/once\_considered\_oceanias\_next\_big\_talent\_raphael/) detailing Raphael Lea’i’s decline since becoming the first Solomon Islander to play professional football in Europe before struggling in his return back home.

since the start of the OFC Champions League, however, he’s returned back to prime form, winning 3 MOTM awards and scoring 4 goals in the tournament!

after a 2-1 defeat in the first match of the group stage to Auckland City which saw them control most of the match, Central Coast have since gone unbeaten in the tournament. in the semi-final match against Vanuatu’s ABM Galaxy, Lea’i bagged a hat trick and secured the winner in the 117th minute to give Coast a 3-2 win in extra time.

the victory has made Coast the first Solomon Islands club to reach the OFC Champions League final since Koloale in 2009; no club from the country has ever won the competition. they will play Auckland City in a rematch to decide the winner - City have won 4 consecutive titles dating back to 2022 and have won 13 overall in their 22-year existence!

Solomon Islands Football Federation breaks rank with Real Kakamora and declares its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino

Despite strong urging from one of the nation‘s most popular clubs Real Kakamora to withdraw its backing of Infantino, SIFF has decided to follow suit with its neighbours Papua New Guinea in declaring its support for the re-election of FIFA’s embattled president. A disappointing decision to say the least - a response is expected from the club in the coming hours

Over the course of the past two weeks, Gianni Infantino has…

- announced a corrupt private investment plan to sell shares in the World Cup to investors (including the brother of Trump‘s son-in-law) and offered small nations $40m if they voted yes in a blatant attempt to bribe them

- intentionally kept multiple high-ranking FIFA officials out of the loop about his plan while exploiting scared junior staff members to help develop it

- initially tried pushing forward with the proposal but ultimately axed it after facing serious backlash from UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC, and parts of Oceania

- offered Morocco to let them host the 2030 World Cup Final match if they continued to support him as President of FIFA

- attempted to secretly bribe the administrators of the Solomon Islands league to permanently ban the club Real Kakamora from all competitions after they posted a statement opposing Infantino

- privately promised the federation of Mexico that he would help them leave CONCACAF for CONMEBOL if they publicly backed him to retain his position

- not yet directed FIFA to pay eleven USA cities the $1M he promised them last year to host World Cup matches

- faced allegations that he used UEFA’s money to pay off his ex-girlfriend during his time as general secretary

- been accused by blackmail by the former vice president of FIFA and the current head of Jordan’s FA because he initially refused to pay the country its prize money for reaching the Arab Cup Final match

how has this man not been forced out of power yet??

Gianni Infantino attempted to bribe Solomon Islands league to permanently suspend Real Kakamora from footballing activities after the club criticised FIFA’s Forward Enterprise proposal

Reports from the Solomon Star newspaper in Honiara today suggest that FIFA made multiple offers to the administrative board of the Solomon Islands S-League to permanently suspend the licence of Real Kakamora in exchange for upwards of SBD$2 million in funds (roughly €215,000), a record-breaking amount of outside funding for the competition.

Kakamora made headlines the previous week after becoming the first Oceanian club to voice their disapproval with the proposal, calling it “in direct opposition to the values and ideals that have made world football what it is today.” Their statement was reportedly influential in helping organise backlash within the region to the plan, whose approval Infantino was counting on in order for it to succeed.

Kakamora have already been suspended from the top flight since 2025 the league vaguely denied their licence application due to “non-compliance with league requirements“, and are waiting until the next three-year licencing cycle opens in 2028 to rejoin the league. In 2024, they had recorded their best-ever finish in the competition and nearly qualified for Oceania’s Champions League and made history after losing all 22 of their matches played the previous year, attracting international attention.

Kakamora’s ban has been a point of contention between the league’s administrative board and the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF). The SIFF wanted Kakamora to remain in the S-League, but were unable to intervene with the board’s decision following a 2015 stipulation that allowed the board to operate completely independently of the federation.

Infantino had offered $40 million in funding to nations who agreed to back Forward Enterprise, making the proposal appealing to under-funded nations in Oceania, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. After seeing Kakamora criticise the proposal as a bribe and helping steer other Oceanian nations away from approving it, he was reportedly infuriated at the club’s actions and looked to have them permanently suspended.

The S-League board did not reply to Infantino’s proposal amidst trying to manage the league’s 2026 season, which kicked off 3 weeks ago after months of delays.

Once considered Oceania’s next big talent, Raphael Lea’i is back in the Solomon Islands league at the age of 22

when Solomon Islands wonderkid Raphael Lea’i moved to Bosnian side Velez Mostar in early 2023, he became the first footballer from the country to play professionally in Europe.

back with his home club, Henderson Eels, Lea’i scored 91 goals in 44 matches, including a league-record 11 goals in one match against the winless Real Kakamora in 2020, and had drawn interest from scouts in Argentina’s top flight but could not move due to visa issues.

however, since his move to Bosnia, Lea’i has struggled considerably on the pitch. after scoring twice in 12 appearances for Velez Mostar, he left back to Oceania due to homesickness in 2024 and joined NPL side Adelaide City for the remainder of the year. there, he was only able to score 2 goals in 9 matches, and when he moved the next year to Wollongong Wolves, he could only score 4 the entire season.

in the inaugural OFC Pro League, Lea’i signed with his home country’s club, Solomon Kings. however, he only scored a single goal in the competition, and after disappointing the country’s fans and facing injury issues, he was dropped from the starting lineup.

he showed a brief flash of his old talent in the FIFA Series friendly earlier this year against Bulgaria, becoming the first Solomon Islander to score a brace against a European opponent.

ahead of the 2026 Solomon S-League season, he signed with two-time defending champions Central Coast, who were looking to significantly strengthen their title defence by signing 9 former Kings players.

he made his debut for the club last week against a young Marist side, the club debuted with in 2018 when he was 14-15 years old. despite Coast’s massive attacking firepower, they struggled to break through the Marist backline until the 94th minute when Lea’i assisted national team defender Javin Wae for the winning goal.

it’s pretty disappointing to see him return to the S-League at such a young age, and I can’t help but think that he’s struggled mentally over the past few years (only 9 club goals in the last three years) but still has more than enough talent to play at a high level. he‘ll have a chance to prove himself again on the international stage in a few weeks when Coast play in the 2026 OFC Champions League!

Fabrizio Romano again facing heavy criticism for deceptive engagement farming practices: “He represents everything wrong with modern football and the shameless greed that corrupts our society”

The latest controversy in a series of incidents for embattled football journalist Fabrizio Romano transpired yesterday after Florian Plettenberg accused him of jumping the gun on Yan Diomande’s transfer, claiming Romano posts updates to be first rather than using confirmed sources. The two proceeded to engage in a lengthy dispute on Twitter. After receiving backlash, Fabrizio unsuccessfully threatened to leak DMs that Plettenberg had sent him years earlier:

Popular Oceanian club Real Kakamora, who were blocked on social media by Romano last September after similarly accusing him of engagement farming by making over 100 posts about Diogo Jota’s death in 24 hours, came to Plettenberg’s defence today in a lengthy statement.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DbTaA2bkdZq/?igsh=MTcwYjNpcngxdTdibw==

The post reads:

”After Florian Plettenberg rightfully criticised him yesterday for sharing false transfer updates and stealing other journalists’ reports as his own in an attempt to get more views, Fab was so rattled that he threatened to leak years-old private DMs that Florian had sent him.

Keep in mind he’s taken payments from agents to defend Mason Greenwood, deliberately created fake rumours to unsettle clubs during transfer windows, replaced most of his graphic designers in favour of AI slop edits, and tried to farm engagement off of Diogo Jota’s death last year by making 100 posts about him in the first 24 hours after the tragedy.

There is nothing this man will not do for more likes and money. I can’t believe that I used to even look up to him years ago. He represents everything wrong with modern football and the shameless greed that corrupts our society.”
