NSV 10 Years ago and Today

Much has gone on over the last decade - but I feel closer to my teens than my approaching 60th in 2028.

NSV 10 Years Apart

There’s much more that happened in the last decade - but I feel better now than in my 20s when I was athletic as well.

My unintentional hip check last week

Finally was able to grab the clip. Pickup game last Wednesday evening. I changed on the fly to left wing. F1 exited his zone but did not have full control of the puck until he was right at the red line and was joined on his right side by F2 off his bench with a 2 on 1 developing to my left. I knew I had trailing help on the right side so I got between F1 & 2. He had his head down and I stayed on the puck and stick. He apologized and said “Sorry, I had my head down.” I was just happy he didn’t get hurt and stuck the landing. It was less than 0.7 seconds from when he got control of the puck at the red line until impact about 12 feet later.

Had to represent at stick and puck today

Yeah I’m a right hand shooting wing, a foot shorter, and almost 40 years older than Schaefer, but I will represent here in the Carolinas. One of my favorite people at the rink turned out to be a lifelong fan growing up here. LGI!

My kid is 8 and has finally become a relatively strong skater. How do I properly tie his skates?

My 8 y/o kid has been playing hockey for four years now and is starting to become a proficient skater (can fluidly skate forwards and backwards, use inside and outside edges, crossover, ankles aren't collapsing, etc.). Until this season, I'd been buying him cheap, soft skates and I would always lace them as tight as possible from the bottom to the top. He wants a pair of more expensive "stiffer" boots this season. Not thrilled about the idea of paying an excessive amount for something he'll grow out of next year, but such is the life of a hockey parent these days.

My question is: what is the proper way to lace skates higher-end skates? I've seen various suggestions from keeping them tight only at the bottom to synching them all the way up and everything in between. I know a lot of it comes down to preference, but I want him to understand and experience how a stiffer boot should be laced so that, if he continues to progress (and eventually start tying his own skates), he knows how to do it the right way.

TIA!

Hockey cardio

Had a great skate last night. 5 v 5 pickup with 2 goalies and 3 on the bench rolling for each side. Whoever said just skate and eat a banana for conditioning was probably right.

Unintentional perfect check in a pickup game

So this was an adult C/D pickup - great bunch in Hillsborough NC. I’m not sure if I was the oldest, but I think I was the shortest and lightest at 5’3” and 135 at 57.

We were about 1 hour into our 90 minute game. I was holding my spot on left wing in the neutral zone, just outside my team’s blue line when another player tried to come past me with the puck- he turned right into me and I just essentially leveled him.

It was clean and unintentional, just straight up defense and being strong on my skates.

I picked him up off the ice and he apologized for running into me, said he had his head down. I laughed and was happy he was absolutely fine.

It’s amazing to me because a few weeks back he probably would’ve knocked me on my ass, but my skating has improved so much and my positioning is back as well.

Last month a guy, easily 250, could not skate in an A-D pickup game. Basically landed over me and I took both of our weights right on my right butt cheek. I got right back up. Still black and blue. I think if that happened today, I would not have gone down.

I’ve had more than a few collisions, but this one was definitely the most intense and frankly, even though we’re not in the checking game, probably one of the more enjoyable hits I’ve made over the years.

Update - hockey and Continuous Glucose Monitor - coming off

(This is after using fixing agents and patches)

For ice hockey players using a continuous glucose monitor:

I made this post 4+ months ago (link in comments)

Long and short-I used just a fixing agent (recommended by Abbott) for months and lost 1 sensor. Past 3 weeks, with or without a cover, takes 1 game of sweating and it’s out. I know part of it is I’m playing harder and have much less fat in last 4 months.

Currently using Libre 3+ - can switch to Dexcom G7 - which allows alternative placement. Anyone made the switch? Any better luck?

TIA!

My favorite part of my C2 Draft League Game…

Going over to congratulate the goalie regardless of the outcome, and then our team handshakes followed by the opponent handshakes. It’s just two teams in this C2 league. We play each week and sometimes we will swap players.

I’m old-fashioned but to me watching the end of the Stanley Cup series and finals every year and then the Olympics every four years and watching everyone beat the crap out of each other, but shake hands at the end—yeah maybe it’s corny but I think it’s one of the best parts of this game.

Razz and chirp away.

First league game and I did not completely suck!

After about 6 pick up games, was able to make my first of 8 league games. C2 Draft League.

Once the got familiar with my team (2nd game of 8 and my first) I started getting into better position, skating, and passing. Line changes and changes got better.

Was either -1 or 0 (we don’t keep stats) at left wing. Need to warm up more on game day but wasn’t terribly winded.

Messed up puck in skates - have to work on this and new glssses script — and missed a coverage (wasn’t my man but I should have abandoned my spot and rushed to him at the point). My skating was very good but my communication was meh. Not much stick handling or shots but not bad for my first time in 43? Years in a league.

I love this game!

Repost - contacts not an option - I wear a full cage - anyone switch to single vision glasses just for hockey?

Contacts are not an option - I wear a full cage. I’m finding I cannot visually pick up the puck well at my feet well because I’m looking through my readers in my progressive lenses.

Here is my current set up: my current progressives and cage
