Looking for flexible aurora tours in Whitehorse that run with small groups/solo

Hi everyone,

Travelling solo to Whitehorse at the end of November. Looking for recommendations on Northern Lights tour companies that are flexible.. ideally ones that will re-accommodate if the first night isn’t ideal weather-wise.

Bonus points if they still run with small groups or even just one person.

Any suggestions or experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Anyone stayed at the Quality Inn Whitehorse recently?

Hi all,

Heading to Whitehorse solo in mid-to-late November for some aurora viewing. Currently booked at the Quality Inn & Suites. I know they’ve done renovations, but I’ve seen a few concerning reviews about mice in the guestrooms.

There was a Booking.com review from just a couple weeks ago with photos of mouse droppings and urine on the bed covers. The hotel’s replies have been pretty vague.

Anyone stayed there recently? Any experiences to share? Really don’t want to deal with that on the trip, but this place is in my budget with a airport shuttle.

Thanks!

Traveling with a Canada Goose Parka – is checking it in a bag okay?

I have a cold-weather trip coming up and need to bring my Canada Goose Parka.

I already asked in the airline sub and most people suggested either wearing it or stuffing it in the overhead bin. I don’t think either option is practical for me given the size of the jacket and length of the flights (5 hours + another 2 hours).

I’m planning to check a bag and carefully fold the parka into it. Has anyone done this with a Canada Goose before? Any advice or experiences traveling with this jacket?

Thanks!

Is a short mid/late November Whitehorse trip worth the trek from Ontario?

Hi all,

I’m trying to decide whether a short Whitehorse trip in mid-to-late November is worth it.

  • Flying Toronto → Vancouver → Whitehorse, arriving 11:30 pm Wednesday
  • Staying Thursday, Friday, Saturday
  • Flying out Sunday at 5:00 am (Whitehorse → Vancouver → Toronto)

I’m not a huge winter person, but I’ve always been curious about the North. I’m interested in an aurora tour, dog sledding or snowshoeing, and the hot springs. The hotel has an airport shuttle, and the tour operators do local pick-ups, so I wouldn’t rent a car.

Because of time off, four days in November is the best I can manage. The hotel is covered through work, so I’d only be paying roughly $500 for flights. Then of course activities and spending money. I know I might not see the aurora and I’m fine with that — I’d still like to try.

I've mostly done warm-weather trips, plus the Middle East and Europe. I’ve been to Banff (beautiful but way to touristy for me). Is Whitehorse unique enough to be worth a short November trip for someone coming from Ontario?

Can I gate-check a bulky Canada Goose parka

I need to go to Whitehorse for a few days in late November and I’m trying to figure out the best way to deal with my Canada Goose parka.

Route is Toronto → Vancouver → Whitehorse. I was planning to travel with just a carry-on and a backpack, but the jacket is too bulky to pack and it would be ridiculously hot to wear on the flights.

Is there any way Air Canada will let me gate-check it? Or do they have another option for something like this? Has anyone dealt with a similar situation on northern routes?

Blue Water Bridge NEXUS hours late evening

Hi everyone,

Crossing the Blue Water Bridge from Sarnia into Michigan next week in the evening — aiming for around 10 PM, maybe later. Does anyone know if the NEXUS lane into the U.S. is open that late / 24 hours, or does it typically close earlier?

Also helpful if anyone has info on the NEXUS hours on the Canadian side for the return trip.

Thanks in advance!

Farm Boy vs. Fortinos/Longo’s vs. Nature’s Emporium: Worth the Premium?

I try to be fairly frugal overall, but when it comes to groceries I’m willing to spend a bit more on higher-quality foods and ingredients.

I always assumed Farm Boy was a good spot for healthier options. Their produce is usually excellent, but beyond that, I find a lot of their selection is similar to what you’d find at other major grocery stores, including plenty of highly processed foods.

I really like shopping at Nature’s Emporium and often stop in for a few items when I'm in a bind, but I’m not sure doing all of my grocery shopping there would be realistic from a cost perspective.

For those who shop at Farm Boy, how do you think it compares to places like Fortinos or Longo’s in terms of quality and value? And for anyone who does most or all of their shopping at Nature’s Emporium, how much more do you find you’re spending each week compared to a traditional grocery store?

TD U.S. Dollar Visa Approved but Not Received....Will Apple Pay Work in the U.S.?

Hi all,

I applied for a TD U.S. Dollar Visa last Thursday and was approved immediately. I'm in the GTA and was hoping to have the card before I leave for the U.S. on Monday evening, but it wasn't in today's mail. I should have one more mail delivery on Monday before I head out.

In the meantime, I was able to add the card to my iPhone's Apple Wallet, even though I haven't received or activated the physical card yet. I wasn't able to add it to my Apple Watch because it requires the CVV from the back of the card.

Has anyone successfully used a newly approved TD credit card through Apple Pay before the physical card arrived? If so, did it work normally for purchases in the U.S. (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.)?

Thanks!

Merged Account Discounts?

Hello,

My wife and I are both using TELUS. I am on an EPP plan, and she has a winback plan. If we merge our accounts, does TELUS provide an additional monthly discount? If yes, do I have to call in or would this be automatic?

Question About Aeroplan Family Sharing and Supplementary Cardholders

Hi all,

My wife and I currently each have our own TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite card and separate Aeroplan numbers. We also participate in Aeroplan Family Sharing and pool our points.

We're considering cancelling her Aeroplan card and adding her as an additional cardholder on my existing card instead.

A couple of questions:

  1. What happens to the Aeroplan points we've already accumulated through Family Sharing? Do those points remain available to us, or could any of her points be affected when her card is cancelled?
  2. Will she keep her own Aeroplan number and account, or will future points simply be earned under my Aeroplan account as the primary cardholder?

Has anyone made a similar change and can share their experience?

Thanks!

How does CRA attribute interest income once married couples combine finances?

Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5?

My wife and I recently got married and are in the process of combining our finances. Her total cash will be moved into our joint checking account, and I will use some to finish maxing out my TFSA. We'll likely put the remaining funds into a non-registered GIC so it's not sitting around doing nothing.

What I'm struggling to understand is how the interest income from the GIC should be reported to the CRA. I keep reading that interest from a joint investment should be reported based on each person's contribution, but once the money is pooled together it starts to feel like a grey area.

For example, if the GIC only exists because my wife contributed additional cash to our joint finances, does she report 100% of the interest? Technically I wouldn't have opened it if we didn't influx more cash into the account.

Side question: when combining finances, is it generally better for a spouse to maintain their own credit card separately, or does becoming an authorized user on mine have any downside? Technically her pay and any transfers to pay the card happen from our joint checking. We already own a home and have no debt outside of our mortgage, but the bank did say this could affect credit building for her.

Body Shop Recommendations for Rust Spots

Hi all,

I have a couple of corrosion spots on my vehicle that I'd like to get fixed this summer. I realize this involves removing, sanding and repainting the full panels. Does anyone have any recommendations for fairly priced/good work body shops in Vaughan that can take care of this? I was recently quoted $1300 for the work by one place, but I am not sure if that is a good price or not.

Thank you

For a February escape: Maui or Tenerife?

Trying to decide between Maui (South Maui/Kihei area) and Tenerife (likely Costa Adeje / Playa del Duque) for the first week of February for my wife and I.

Flights from Canada are roughly the same cost. Though Tenerife is direct from where I am. Accommodations seem slightly cheaper in Tenerife.

Main things we care about:

  • Dry/warm/hot weather / good chance to sit by the pool and tan (maybe beach too)
  • Nice beaches
  • Good shopping
  • Good restaurants
  • Safe / comfortable feel
  • Not somewhere super packed with loud obnoxious tourists, sports bars, or cheap party-strip vibes

For anyone familiar with both, which would you choose?
