Old 2.1 speaker system: replaced the main filter capacitor, still getting humming

I'm looking for some advice on an old VS2421 2.1 speaker system. It's a very cheap multimedia speaker set, but it has sentimental value so I'm trying to repair it instead of replacing it.

The issue is a constant low-frequency hum (I'd estimate around 100 Hz) that starts as soon as the system is powered on, even with no audio cable connected.

Based on previous advice, I replaced the main filter capacitor (Samxon 4700µF 35V, ~20 years old) with a new Nichicon PW 4700µF 50V 105°C(the big green top right of photo 1).

Unfortunately, the hum is still present. It may be slightly lower than before, but it's definitely still audible.

Here are a few observations:

  • The hum is present in both satellite speakers and the subwoofer.
  • The master volume control has no effect on the hum.
  • The bass control affects the subwoofer. Increasing the knob increases the hum from the subwoofer.
  • If I turn the bass control all the way down, the subwoofer becomes silent, but the satellites still have the hum.
  • The subwoofer cone can be felt vibrating slightly from the hum.

I'm attaching a picture of the PCB.

Based on these symptoms, what would you investigate next?

Would you suspect:

  • other electrolytic capacitors around the amplifier,
  • the power supply,
  • the bridge rectifier,
  • or simply the design of this very cheap amplifier?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :-)

Need help diagnosing a constant hum in an old 2.1 speaker system

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to restore an old VS2421 2.1 speaker system. I know it's a very cheap multimedia kit, but it has sentimental value to me, so I'd really like to keep it alive if possible.

The kit works fine, but as soon as I turn it on (even with no audio source connected and no music playing), the subwoofer produces a constant low-frequency electrical hum/buzz. It's more of a deep "mmmmmm" sound than a high-pitched coil whine, and it's clearly audible from my listening position.

The noise seems to come from the subwoofer enclosure itself. I can also feel the woofer cone vibrating very slightly in sync with the hum.

I opened the unit and found that the power supply is very simple:

14.2 VAC transformer (2 A)

One main Samxon electrolytic capacitor rated at 4700 µF 35 V

The rest are just smaller capacitors.

The 4700 µF capacitor doesn't appear swollen or leaking, but since the kit is around 15-20 years old, I'm wondering if it could simply be worn out.

Could replacing this main 4700 µF capacitor realistically reduce or eliminate this low-frequency hum, even if it looks physically fine? Or is this more likely to be a transformer issue or just the normal behavior of a very cheap amplifier design?

I'd appreciate any advice before I start desoldering components. Thanks!

Am I the only one who thinks the official explanation for floaters is incomplete?

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, and I find the standard explanation for floaters a bit unsatisfying.

We’re told that floaters are simply physical debris or collagen clumps inside the vitreous casting shadows on the retina. While I don’t doubt that there’s a physical component, I’m increasingly convinced that part of the mechanism is being overlooked.

For example, I take retigabine (ezogabine) for tinnitus. It’s a potassium channel opener that affects neuronal excitability. During the period when the medication is active, my floaters become almost invisible. They’re still physically there, yet my awareness of them drops dramatically.

As the drug wears off, the floaters become much more noticeable again. Sometimes it even feels as if new floaters are appearing, or at least entering my conscious perception.

This makes me wonder whether sensory gating and thalamic filtering play a much larger role than is currently acknowledged. The brain constantly filters out huge amounts of sensory information. We don’t normally perceive our nose, blood vessels, or many other visual artifacts. So why would floaters be purely an eye problem?

My experience strongly suggests that the brain’s processing of floater signals is at least as important as the vitreous opacities themselves. The physical structures may generate the visual input, but the degree to which they become intrusive seems heavily influenced by central nervous system mechanisms.

I’m not claiming that floaters are “all in the brain.” Obviously there is a physical source. But I suspect there’s a missing piece involving thalamic processing, cortical attention networks, or sensory gating that isn’t fully understood yet.

Has anyone else noticed changes in floater visibility when taking medications that affect neuronal excitability, attention, or sensory processing?

1.12 client is really a piece of crap

I don't understand how some server still base their version on this outdated piece of shiet, even with all the fixes etc its still FAR inferior to 1.14 or 3.3.5a.

Other players movement feels slow and eratic and the lighting is a joke + tons of other drawbacks

Why does it feel like everyone does insane damage in Ranked ?

I'm currently in Ultra, and honestly, it feels like enemy Pokémon are dealing way too much damage.

My held items are around level 20-30, so it's not like I'm running completely unupgraded builds, but the moment I run into an enemy, I just get deleted. Every match feels like I have no time to react.

What's even more frustrating is that every melee Pokémon seems to have a gap closer, while ranged Pokémon somehow play perfectly, constantly hitting and running without ever being caught.

My last match against Dragapult and Typhlosion was ridiculous. The second they appeared on my screen, I was basically dead.

I usually play squishier ranged attackers like Decidueye, Duraludon, and Zapdos, but I also play all-rounders like Metagross and Ceruledge. No matter what I pick, it often feels like the enemy team has way more damage than I do.

Am I missing something important about positioning, item builds, or the current meta?

Choosing moves before match is complete non sense.

What the hell is this decision?

One of the best parts of Pokémon battles is being able to adapt your moveset to the Pokémon you’re actually facing. Team preview already gives information, but locking your moves before the match removes a huge layer of strategy and flexibility.

Instead of rewarding adaptation and prediction, it feels like you’re just hoping your preset moves happen to match your opponent’s team. To me, that’s less strategic, not more.

I really miss being able to adjust my moves after seeing what I’m up against. It made battles feel much more dynamic and skill-based.

Ryzen 7 5800X - Recurrent WHEA 0x124 crashes even after PSU replacement. CPU, motherboard or something else?

Ryzen 7 5800X - Recurrent WHEA 0x124 crashes even after PSU replacement. CPU, motherboard or something else?

Hi everyone,

I'm troubleshooting a very stubborn issue on a Ryzen 7 5800X system and I'm running out of ideas.

Specs:

  • Ryzen 7 5800X
  • ASUS Prime B550M-A WiFi II bios version 3621
  • GTX 1060
  • 2x DDR4 RAM
  • Windows 11

Symptoms:
The PC was completely stable for about 3 weeks, then started crashing with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (0x124) BSODs. The crashes have gradually become more frequent.

The system is generally stable during web browsing and light use, but crashes mostly occur while playing World of Warcraft.

What I've already tried:

  • Clean Windows reinstall
  • XMP/DOCP disabled
  • RAM running at JEDEC/default speeds
  • Tested each RAM stick individually
  • Replaced the PSU with a brand new be quiet! System Power 11 650W
  • Monitored temperatures (45-55°C while gaming, max ~73°C)
  • No CPU or memory overclocking

Crash information:

  • WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (0x124)
  • Machine Check Exception
  • Failure bucket repeatedly reports: 0x124_0_AuthenticAMD_MEMORY__UNKNOWN_FATAL_IMAGE_AuthenticAMD.sys

I also get:

  • WHEA Logger Event ID 18
  • MCABank 27
  • APIC ID 0

What's confusing me is that replacing the power supply made absolutely no difference. The same crashes still occur.

The RAM kit had previously been used for about two months in another Ryzen 5800X/B550 system without any issues, which makes me less suspicious of the memory itself.

At this point, would you suspect:

  1. Defective Ryzen 5800X (IMC / Infinity Fabric)?
  2. Faulty motherboard?
  3. RAM despite previous stability?
  4. Something else entirely?

Has anyone experienced similar MCABank 27 / WHEA 124 crashes on Ryzen 5000?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Support always taking bot lane in casual mode.

Hello !

Came back to the game after a long pause.

I play with my gf and we always choose bot lane, we indicate it before the game start by choosing it with the option at the character sélection screen.

But 90 % on games There is a Chansey, Eldegoss or Mime that come with us, they never heal or help us and refuse to leave, they only farm xp and try to fight alone and never help despite playing support.

The result is the top laner being alone and i have to help him.

They sometimes make weird left right movement.

Are thèse people bot ? Or just really brain dead ?

We are Master and ranked game are really though, but casual are really 100% win for us and we are mvp every Time, its like we are playing with 5 years old.

Thanks
