I am a 25M in Canada with a decent job.

I am planning on getting married (don’t know who to) in next year couple years. I want a very simple wedding - simply because I believe the money can be reinvested somewhere else. I have a decent job so I’m getting immense pressure from my relatives to have a “grand” wedding.

I can afford a “grand” wedding but as mentioned, I’d prefer a smaller one. The problem is my relatives are saying people will think my job is no longer good if I arrange a smaller wedding. I personally don’t care what people say- however, they think this small change, (I.e., having a small wedding) will somehow ruin my life as I’ll be disrespected in society (which I know is not true).

They are also saying my wife will be “below” my level if I do a small wedding which is crazy to me because I’ve never thought that way. Our family friends had a wedding and it cost more than $150k- they also invited 500 people which I’m not planning to but getting a lot of pressure as my relatives think I’ll be compared to them. I’m planning on inviting 50 people max from my side.
