We need your help! (Steam Frame TL;DR Board)

Hello everyone! This is a call for help to anybody who's able.

As many of you know, as with Steam Controller and Steam Machine, many members of the Steam Hardware community have been tracking shipments of all three products using sites like importyeti.com and importgenius.com. Recently our maintainers on the Steam Frame TL;DR Board have run into a roadblock with this.

Due to shipments having been announced in a "town crier" type format up until recently (with the publishing of our Steam Frame TL;DR board), we are currently unsure of how many shipments of "Virtual Reality Devices" Valve has shipped from China to the United States. We are also not entirely certain of their destinations, shipment dates, and exact weight. We have a lot of shipments documented, but this discrepancy has thrown our calculations far off our expected numbers.

That's where you guys come in. If any one of you have paid for subscription access to one of these import logging sites, we'd love to work with you to verify our information and document this on our TL;DR board for future reference and speculation.

Thank you so much!

Steam Frame TL;DR Board

Hey y'all, a few weeks ago, some mods and members of the Steam Frame Discord and I got together and decided that there have been far too many repetitive questions about Frame, and that it just isn't easy to get up-to-date information about Frame. So we made this: the Steam Frame TL;DR Board!

It is still a work in progress but we are committed to maintaining it up till and past launch, so please feel free to send feedback, comments, and concerns either below or on the board. I hope this helps all y'all (whether you're newbies to Frame or just aren't interested in digging through the internet for specifics) get the information you're looking for in an easily digestible way.

Happy Schizoposting!

https://www.figma.com/board/jnxPfXnyJM48ATQ072Oq1t

Edit: Thank you all so much for the outpour of support! This project is very community focused and a labor of love by all those involved so we really do appreciate every single one of you.

To celebrate our first day of going public, and to make it easier for you all to share when that one newie asks about the mobile app button for the millionth time, I've attached a shortened link under the original post and in the board itself for use as a copypasta. Our board is meant to be public so please, by all means, send it to anyone and everyone you'd like!

The idea that anyone in the fandom cares about tadc more than gooseworx is absurd.

You, yes you. If YOU feel targeted by the title, I'm talking to YOU.

Art is worth whatever the maker believes it to be worth. If an artist doesn't care that much anymore about their work, it doesn't mean you care more about it than they do, it just means it meant something to you. Big whoop, that's good for you. But that artist ultimately has say on whatever that art is worth and what it means. And if they seem to care just a little bit less than you do, it's probably because your own enthusiasm ruined it for the artist themselves.

This fandom as a whole (I'm not talking about the people that didn't. Good voices are rarely the most vocal) has basically destroyed gooseworx and their care for their work and it is this fandom's fault. The immaturity, the nagging, the whiney bitchiness of this fandom has almost certainly killed gooseworx's interest in ever touching this goddamn IP again.

If you think you can tell the story better or think that gooseworx should care more or what have you, take a look in the mirror and really ask yourself. Are you so self centered that you think a story you have no input on is better off with you whining about it?

To reiterate, yes. YOU. If YOU felt targeted by that YOU are the problem. So fuck off and grow up. Jesus christ.

Edit 1: Just something to add; something I should’ve said. When you didn’t make something, it is your privilege, not your right to have an opinion about it. If we don’t like a show, we can stop watching it. Nothing we do is going to change it. Sure, we can point fingers at external factors but NEVER the creator. NEVER EVER.

Edit 2: And if anyone think that the actions of a few don’t speak for us, they absolutely do. Our silence is a void filled with the voices of literal children. So do you want this fandom to be made of children who speak for you or are you going to speak out and shut down this bullshit?

Edit 3: I should clarify some stuff I worded badly on my end. It’s not nescessarily value in art but effort in art. The passion behind it. A third party CANNOT get into the head of an artist and presume to know what’s best for it. That effort, that passion, that value is lost on us. We just see the surface level. Our understanding of the passions behind tadc (as much as it is) only scratches the surface. So again, it doesn’t give anyone the right to judge gooseworx’s attitude towards it all

The steam frame problem

My friends the time for the steam frame launch is fast approaching and we got an issue on our hands: vr support. Do we think it’s likely from a technical perspective for the steam frame to stream just fine from an arc card (in my case a b580)? I’m genuinely worried I’ll have to get a secondary nvidia card just for vr

What I think the best choice for valve is (pricing wise) as well as my view on this community as a whole

I'll start off with my view since it's seemingly impossible to make a case in the discord without dogpiling.

The frame, at least according to some sources, is probably something like 650 bucks. That's been circulating for a while so, with the benefit of just not knowing any concrete information, set that as our baseline. Valve doesn't like to subsidize their hardware, that's a well known fact. Especially recently we've seen the steam controller and the SD oled go for well above cost. That said, even though everything else like shipping and R&D cost money as well, I can absolutely see the steam frame going for 699 for the base model. I say this not out of naivety but purely out of pragmatism.

Consider this: No matter what anyone says, the quest 3, as of right now and likely as of launch, IS the steam frame's direct competition. It sells about at cost for 599. It does almost all of the same stuff whether we like it or not. The lenses are comparable, the displays are comparable (don't cherry pick and say they're different, I KNOW they are. But they're close enough to be comparable). When considering the two you have to weigh pros and cons. For example, passthrough on the quest 3 is just better and it costs less for more storage. On the other hand, the dongle makes the frame infinitely better than the quest 3 at pcvr in every way. I've seen some people arguing that the steam frame is "niche" or that it's a "premium product". No, sorry, it absolutely is not. It's about in line with what all the rumors leading up to its announcement was: a vr steam deck.

With that knowlege, it's pretty clear to me that the steam frame's base model will have to be priced at 699 or 749 simply for the fact that it must stay competitive. Valve knows it's going to be immediately compared to the quest 3 so they've made every effort to make it worth an extra 100-150 dollars because, in my view as are a lot of other people here, it IS and overall better product. Back to the point of some people calling it a premium product and that it's more in line with a quest pro, until the next gen quest pro is announced NOBODY outside of the existing VR community will even consider comparing it to what amounts to smoke and mirrors.

So again, at least in my opinion and what makes the best marketing, PR, and business sense for valve: 699 or 749. Feel free to agree or disagree. I could be wrong, you could be wrong. We could ALL be wrong.

That said, just some food for thought for this community as a whole, particularly on the discord. When someone even thinks of suggesting 699 or 749 or something maybe a little bit lower than what you think, maybe it's not so good of an good idea to outright claim that your own opinion of "oh it's GOT to be $800" or "It's definitely gonna be at least $1k" is gospel and try to shut down any notion of it being any less. It kills discourse and is incredibly unhealthy for a community. Especially one that would do good to try and be a little optimistic. This isn't me ragging on your opinions, they're all valid, but JESUS can some of yall not be assholes? And this isn't me speaking for myself. I've been quietly watching and it's genuinely bizzare how toxic it can be. I know not all yall are like that, much love and respect to those who are, but damn. If the vocal minority is that toxic, we have a massive problem. Not trying to be an authority (I'm definitely not), just trying to promote positive discourse in here.

Question about quest 3S airlink

So I'm interested in getting a wireless pcvr headset. Right now I'm waiting for the steam frame, but since the price is likely gonna be anywhere from 700-800 bucks for the base model (local games isn't something i'm too interested in), there's entirely a chance that it ends up out of my budget. Because of that, right now I'm looking at the Quest and it seems a compelling choice, but I have to ask yall, is airlink likely gonna be any good for a quest 3s in my situation?

I get around 500-550mbps average down and 117mbps up on the wifi extension point (wifi 6e) I have connected to my pc via ethernet. I plan on gaming in the same bedroom as that access point and it is within eyeshot (like 6 feet tops) from the play area.

I ask this because one of my friends keeps telling me how shit airlink is. Horror stories like half the screen freezing etc and I was like "damn, that sucks ass, it's definitely not worth it for me" but again, if it's serviceable, I'll for sure consider it.

Anywho, whadda yall think? Any horror stories of your own or caveats I should know about?

Edit: I should probably mention that my wifi extender is an extension of the main home verizon 5g router so there's a lot of people and devices on the network. Looks like that's gonna make it a world of hurt but if it is, then it's just not worth it for me

First, Yeah, it sucks that the SC2 got released in the middle of a work day, but from a business perspective it made sense. Only people who care THAT much will go out of their way to buy it, and of course that means they can get numbers on their demographic and it won't sell out in 5 seconds or crash the servers. I know it was bad yesterday, but imagine how much worse it would be on a weekend.

Second, they didn't know what reception of it would be. I don't think a lot of you guys understand how BAD the og steam controller sold. I picked mine up when they were selling them off for 15 bucks a pop. Safe to say, they had a reason to be incredibly paranoid over how much stock they should keep of this thing.

Third, this is by far NOT the worst launch of a product ever. Just a few in recent memory.... the ps5... the switch 2.... the OG switch too... hell, the steam deck too. It could've been a whole lot worse. Hell, yall remember the ps2 and wii launches?

If anything we should be glad we're all so excited and want a SC2 that bad. It means that our community proved all the nonbelievers right and it means there's a good future for the steam controller. And again, I know it's a bummer that a lot of us weren't able to pick one up, especially those of us who have been waiting for over a decade, but try and at least have a glass half full mentality and give hats off to the incredible engineers and product managers that got us back here

Edit: That said, fuck scalpers and I hope Valve will be able to figure out a way ot stop them. We can't stop all of them, but at least we can try. Oh and for the love of GOD none of you dare buy any from the scalpers. I want them to starve.
