My Resume/CV is worthless - How can I improve it?

Hi,

I have different concerns about my CV.

What to do with irrelevant experiences?

I have about 8 jobs listed on my CV for the last 10 years. Experiences are all over the place. I have a mix of customer service roles, mailroom roles or more creative roles (website management, graphic design).

My most recent experience from the last 5 years have been mostly customer service related, so my professional path that have been unsuccessful is becoming less and less relevant, as well as my school.

Right now, instead of detailing everything, I have a section "Relevant Experience" where I describe relevant jobs. And after I have another section "other experience" where I just list the position I had without any further details.

Is that ok?

Sometimes I just wish I could remove all my experience and start from scratch because my CV is kind of working against me in some ways. Too many different experience = Hard to find jobs.

Skills

This week someone told me that on the CV, I should focus on acquired skills instead of just listing what I did at the job. It made me wonder two things. Using AI, for my most recent mailroom job, I get:

  • Mail reception and sorting: Receive, sort, and check incoming envelopes and parcels while applying security procedures and strong attention to detail.
  • Document handling: Scan, open, and route documents to the appropriate teams while maintaining steady pace and consistent accuracy.
  • Internal circulation: Move carts and ensure smooth circulation of documents between teams until final archiving.

Is that a good format I should use for all my previous jobs? Normally I just put job description/tasks.

I still have a skill section, but don't want to repeat myself in two places.

-----

Anyway, the worst in all that is that I hate all jobs that my CV make me stuck in.

How do I make a career-pivot CV?

Thank you

All American Robins are gone in a single day. Is it a sign of failure?

Hi,

There was Robin’s nest in front of my door on a nearby tree. I observed them for a month.

Two weeks ago, 4 little babies were born. it was quite a success at that time, but it turned out very weird after.

Earlier this week, they were getting very big, and the nest is quite small. After a very hot day, one died.

Two days ago, the remaining three were getting ready to leave the nest. In the evening, only one was left in the nest.

Yesterday, it was weird. I saw one remaining on a branch and the mother was feeding him. And suddenly, the mother cleaned up the nest or something, because the first one who died fell off the tree (dried out - skeleton-like) and another fledgling fell off dead.

So, that makes two dead, one unknown and one alive.

In the evening, I went to see what was happening. Everything was silent. The dead body was gone, and I saw a blue jay feather on the ground (I didn’t see them for at least a month). Since then, no sign of the Robins. Not just the family in front of my door, but all the others too.

I’m just wondering… Are they just hiding in silence to protect the young ones, or they failed (baby eaten) and they are gone?

Last year I found one little fledgling on the ground hidden in a bush. I did try to look everywhere and I didn’t see anything or any American Robins flying.

Thanks

One baby American Robin is dead in nest. Should I leave it like this?

EDIT: They are four babies! I Just saw a third head alive. But one is still dead. 😢

They are getting big. About 3 weeks old. Red appearing on their body.

Hi,

There is a nest of American Robins near my house. I love observing them with mom and dad feeding them.

They were three babies, but now there is one not moving. Yesterday there was a storm, lot of rain, and today is very hot and humid.

I don’t think it’s sleeping, because the other two are awake and breathing heavily to not overheat.

I don’t want to take the dead baby to disturb the nest and the other two. But I don’t want rodent to come or them to get sick.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Group projects in the era of AI - I hate it

Hi,

I joined a short online program earlier this year and I'm very motivated and all. I study the best I can (even if I didn't find the right method to retain everything yet) and so far, I'm loving it. We have a group project to do and I thought that everyone in this program were on the same page and as passionate as me about it.

But I guess it's not the case.

People join the call 30% of the time, are taking shortcuts using AI even if they are in their 30-40s.

So, I really don't know what to do. I did my part and all, but I feel like about half of the team are just passive on this project.

I don't know what to do, because I didn't do everything and people came up with some great stuffs at first, but I just feel like I do more than them for the writing part. I had to rewrite some parts because AI suck.

I thought I would love doing a project with people having the same interest as me, but I guess people don't care as much as I do. For me it's for the future me. Maybe for them it's just a side-learning program...

Right now, we need to send back our draft to professors and then work on a final version until this fall. I know some people will do way more works as I don't have the skills to create appealing videos, etc.

I guess I can do the work now and let them do the rest for the second part?

How do I cool inside the house?

Hi,

without using AC, is there a way to really cool down inside a house?

So far, we tried:

  • Ceiling fan: Just making wind. Can cool only 1 degree.
  • Opening windows at night: It’s 15° outside, still 22° inside despite opening all windows.

We have an old house with bad insulation. I just don’t get how can heat keep getting stuck inside and not get out.

Seeking to study in the UK as a Canadian - Need advice

Hi,

I'm Canadian and I spent the last month searching for study program to go back to university in my 30s.

I searched across Canada, Europe and the UK, but only the UK really keep my interest by its dynamic programs and hands on approach.

However, I would love to hear from people who actually did it.

The price scares me a lot. I'm not use to pay in the $35-40k for something (school) that is now worthless.

So, I would love to hear about:

  • Your experience studying in the UK.
  • Your experience living in the UK.
  • If there is any monetary help from the UK or Canada for international students?

Thank you very much for your help and support.

Searching for a clean academic citation style

Hi,

I'm looking at a citation style similar to APA, but without commas separating the last name and initial of an author. I personally find this confusing to separate who's who.

My main criteria are:

  • No commas to separate last name to initial.
  • Italic journal name
  • Year between parentheses

One I found is Springer Basic but doesn't have italic for the journal/website name.

If nothing exists, I guess I will just take APA.

Thank you

How do you properly cite references on a paper in Natural Science/Marine Biology?

Hi,

What's the most commonly used citation style in Natural Science/Marine Biology?

I've spent 2 hours looking online and I can't really find the answer. I need to add references to the small document I'm writing (it's not a paper) and I just want to follow good practice.

Precision: Must be used in Europe and Internationally.

So far, I found different formats like APA, Vancouver, Nature, Springer, and I really like JoVE format too. However, there are so many options that I can't really pick one. I'm using Paperpal Generator.

Thinking of hiding browser from my phone.

Hi,

I feel like I use browser way too much on my phone. I deleted social media apps, but still use the browser for researching stuffs, going on Facebook or Reddit.

So, I want to try something new. Hiding the browser, so I only use it when really necessary or someone messaging me with a link.

I really want to get back to the early 2000 life when the computer was the device to go on the internet and the phone was a phone.

Probably I should do the same with YouTube no?

At one point I used a time limit to use those apps, but was always cancelling that because there is always something interesting to see.

What do you guys think?

How do you self-learn Spanish effectively?

Hi,

it’s been a long time since I want to learn Spanish to be able to understand people speaking it and be able to converse a bit.

I did learn Spanish a long time ago in high school, but even with English, I was really bad learning languages. I truly picked up English when I started traveling alone.

Now about Spanish, it’s not a language I can use daily. That’s the first problem since I can’t really practice. I only go to Spain once every 5 years…

I installed Drops on my phone, but it’s a complete waste of time. Yes, you learn words, but who said the 5 minutes limit was a good way to learn?

I also installed Tandem to find people on a kind of language exchanges. But I don’t get the time and motivation right now to launch myself into that.

I also tried watching movies or videos in Spanish, but it’s so fast-paced that I barely recognize words.

Any tips about learning a language that you don’t really use?

Sometimes I just feel like the only thing that may work is to go in a Spanish country for months and be immersed in the language.

Thank you

Feeling overwhelmed - Outdoor clothing

Hi everyone,

I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed trying to build a small, functional outdoor capsule wardrobe for summer. Right now, I only own shorts, jeans, and T‑shirts. I own nothing technical (activewear) for actual activities.

I’m planning to do a mix of things this summer:

  • Trekking and hiking;
  • Walking around town and traveling;
  • Camping;

The problem is that every activity seems to require different clothing, and I don’t want to end up buying five pairs of pants, multiple shirts, and several pairs of shoes. That kind of defeats the whole idea of a capsule wardrobe.

I’m especially stuck on trousers. Hot weather, humid weather, insect protection (ankle drawcord), hiking, casual wear… it feels like each situation needs something different. I want to stay minimalist, but I'm scared of the fact that yes, I need all of that to build my outdoor wardrobe from scratch.

Any advice on how to simplify this, choose versatile pieces, or build a small outdoor capsule would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

How to design a review system without actual booking?

Hi,

I'm building a website to help people find accommodations based on a specific theme. However, there won’t be a booking system, but I still want to have some kinds of reviews.

My first idea was to guests to write their reviews and put their reservation number and date of stay before being approved by the host to show review. However, I feel like this idea isn't that great because of fake account that could be created, or host just declining all low reviews.

Now, my idea is to get the reviews reviewed by the admin team, but not too sure how. Booking confirmation? Receipt?
Just having a booking number doesn't mean anything when you don't know if it's true or fake.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Any of you started long-term travelling in your later 30s, early 40s?

Hi,

I just need a bit of motivation right now. I’m 32, and I’ve always dreamed of going abroad for more than a couple of weeks to volunteer, to work in hostels, or just to travel slowly and really experiencing the world. But life kept getting in the way, and I never managed to take that long‑term trip.

Now I’m realizing that most Working Holiday/Youth Mobility visas end at 35, and I’m not in a stable enough situation to take a full gap year yet. I’m thinking about going back to school next year, and at the moment I’m working close to minimum wage, so it feels like the window is closing.

I’d really love to hear from people who started long‑term travel later in life. Especially in their 30s or 40s.

  • How did you make it work?
  • What visas did you use?
  • Where did you go?
  • How did you manage the logistics and the money side?

I know Europe has the 90‑day limit, but I’m not sure how it works in other regions or what options exist for older travelers who still want to volunteer or work abroad.

Any stories, advice, or encouragement would mean a lot.

Thank you!

Edit: I’m from Canada.

How do you figure out what you really want when you have two conflicted ideas of what your future can be?

Hi,

I’m 32 and I feel torn between two very different futures. In my 20s, I always dreamed of doing a Working Holiday, living in quiet hostels, traveling slowly, and experiencing the freedom I never had. I never got to live that life, and it still feels unfinished.

But in the last couple of years, I discovered a new passion through a citizen‑science expedition and some marine‑related courses. That experience made me feel aligned in a way I hadn’t felt in years, and now I’m drawn toward a future in marine conservation.

So now I’m stuck between two dreams:

  • Old Dream: the life I always wanted but never lived. Working in a quiet hostel by the beach, learning to surf, meeting people with similar values.
  • New Dream: the life I’ve recently discovered. A future at sea, sailing, marine conservation, something meaningful and aligned.

The problem is that time feels limited. As a Canadian, most Working Holiday Visas end at 35, so choosing the New Dream first might mean losing the Old Dream forever. But choosing the Old Dream first makes me worry I’ll fall behind or regret not pursuing the meaningful path while I still can.

Not only that, but I want to go back to university (even if right now it's too expensive) and if I go at the end of 2027, it doesn't give me much time...

It feels like whichever one I choose, I’m closing the door on the other. And I’m scared of making a decision. I know I want to pursue marine conservation, but I also know I want to live abroad for a while and experience the life I missed.

So, how do you figure out what you truly want when you have two conflicting futures and choosing one feels like losing the other?

Maybe I should forget about the past and focus on the path forward, even if it leaves me with regrets?

How do you cope with regrets?

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if any of you have big regrets in life and how do you cope with that?

I’m in my early 30’s and I just feel like a completely failed my 20’s. I should have done more things I actually wanted to do. Maybe it would have help me career wise too.

I spent my whole 20’s working in retail, while trying to find a professional job. And look where I am now. Nowhere! 😭

And working at minimum wage made me scared of spending too much money… But I had so many dreams and things I wanted to do. For example, doing a working holiday visa in Australia and New-Zealand, working in a hostel to meet people, surf... Actually, just learn to enjoy life.

But here I am now, coming closer to 35 years age limit for any youth visa, but wanting to get back to university too.

I should have done everything earlier, take a gap year or two. Now I’m squeezed and can’t do anything.

That’s my biggest regret, to not have lived.

Thank you.

AIO about getting a job in a field I don't see myself in anymore?

Hi,

So, I spent years (5+) trying to find a job in my field of multimedia (web, social media). Now I'm in a sort of transition figuring out what to do next. I'm looking at going back to university in a field I love much more.

Anyway, someone I know gave my contact to his boss and he wishes to discuss with me.

For real, I'm a bit scared to get stuck in a situation where I can get a better job than what I have now, but this field isn't me anymore. At some point, I wouldn't care to work in a digital agency, creating content, making website, etc.

But I realized last year that I hate algorithms, coding and everything that is fake.

So, I don't know how to approach this opportunity.

On one part, Plan A didn't work, but now "maybe" an open door. Plan B which I enjoy the most, but uncertain as I didn't really start yet. In both cases, I don't really have experience in anything so... I just know that I don't see myself in Plan A anymore.

Maybe I'm just overthinking and after discussing with the boss, he will see I'm not a good match... I just don't want to deceive the person who recommended me and the family that push me through it.

Thank you

Where do you find your maps?

Hi,

I'm new into QGIS. I'm trying to learn through different tutorial online, but I have difficulty understanding how and where you are finding your maps (first layer).

  • Single country
  • A single area in a country
  • Natural stylized map

Right now, I was only able to get OpenStreetMap and found a connection to ESRI map for satellite.

I did try Natural Earth II with Shaded Relief and Water, but it looks like I can't zoom-in as it become pixelated.

Here are some examples I like:

Ideally, I would love to have the possibility to isolate a country (make surrounding lighter color), or have OpenStreetMap without labels, but only borders or rivers.

Here is me just trying to do some random stuffs. The water is very dark on ESRI map... What is the best free satellite imagery?

Is there any tutorial on that?

What do you prefer?

I’m right-handed and I have the weird habits to change which sides my letters are tilted in the middle of my note-taking.

Tilted to the left/center = more legible, slower to write.

Tilted to the right = Faster, less legible?
