Hey everyone! Version 2.6 of TileMakerDOT is officially live, free and open source for GODOT!

For those who might be new to the project, TileMakerDOT is a completely FREE and OPEN SOURCE 2D map editor, and it is built specifically for the GODOT engine!

In this update, I focused entirely on a brand new quality of life feature that I’ve always felt was missing from other mapping tools: The Annotation Notes Tool!

When working on large or complex maps, it’s so easy to lose track of details, like remembering to finish a wall, place an NPC, or set up a script trigger. Instead of keeping a separate notepad, you can now drop visual note pins right onto your map to leave yourself reminders. They save directly into your project file so your TODO list is right where you need it!:)

What I am working on next:

The foundation is set, and I will be working on the next big workflow improvement: Native file launching. What is that? Well, soon you can double click any exported .tmdot project file directly from your Windows File Explorer, and the editor will boot up instantly and load your file automatically without the need to open the TileMaker DOT app first.

❤️ Support the Project

TileMakerDOT will always be free and open source, but your support keeps development moving! If this tool is helping you build your projects, please consider supporting my work:

TileMaker DOT is now 100% Free and Open Source under the MIT License!

After so many recommendations in many past posts about this tool, I finally decided it is time to open source it:)

If you are a game developer building 2D games, you can now access, modify, fork, and build upon the entire application framework without any restrictions.

TileMaker DOT is a custom map creation tool engineered to eliminate layout overhead and drastically speed up your environmental design workflow. All assets included (tiles, objects, NPCs) are completely unrestricted for commercial use.

Whether you want to deploy the compiled binaries into your workflow, study the custom Java code, or expand the tool code for your own custom engine pipeline, everything is open.

I would appreciate if you could drop a star on the repository, rate or comment the itch.io page, check the quick start tutorial, or grab the build package using the links below:

Hey guys, a new v2.5 Update for Free TileMaker DOT Map Editor Tool is finally live!

I’ve spent the past two weeks doing a massive under the hood refactor of the editor. It wasn't the most glamorous work, but I completely rebuilt the core architecture and refactored most of the main classes. The result is an editor that should run faster, is even more stable, and is set up for me and you in the future to easily add bigger features, because now is easier to open source it in the near future!

Along with the performance boost, I added some memory to the brush and NPC Walk area tools so they remember your previous selections and now you can toggle them off instead of having to select an item to exit them. I also removed the annoying 0,5s - 1s lag when opening some menus like the Application Legend. I also fixed the pathing bug for the custom ID lists, because before it read the .txt file from the .exe location instead of the selected 'assets' folder at the startup of the tool.

If you want to see how to use TileMaker DOT, as always, here is a video tutorial series:

You can download the latest version for free over on Itch.io:

Thanks to everyone who has been using it and testing it out and sending feedback! Let me know how the new update feels!:)

Update for TileMaker DOT Map Editor is out now

After some feedback, I’ve been working on a few quality of life updates to make building levels feel less tedious:) The biggest change is a new "Locate Item" feature. If you have a map with hundreds of objects, you can now use this tool to click any tile, object or npc in your library and have the editor instantly highlight that asset on your canvas. It also adds a live count to the status bar so you can see exactly how many of those objects are placed on your map.

I also fixed the focus issue with the filter bar. It will no longer grab focus, capturing keyboard input when you first launch the app, so you can get straight to work with your shortcuts.

You can see how the tool works in this tutorial series: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fiajGU32Jg\]

TileMaker DOT v2.3 is out now with filtering functionality for Unity

Hi, after some feedback I’ve been working on improving the workflow for the map editor, especially as projects start to get larger. Finding specific tiles, objects, or NPCs in a long list can be hard, so I’ve added a new filter bar to the sidebar:)

You can now type the name of any asset, and the editor will instantly hide anything that doesn't match, keeping your workspace clean and helping you find what you need without all the scrolling. It also dynamically hides tabs that don't have matching results, so you aren't clicking through empty folders.

I also added a quick "X" button to clear the search, and made sure that the filter bar is shortcut aware, which means you can type your search queries without the editor accidentally firing off hotkeys.

I’ve updated the in-app Legend (press L) and !also fixed some UI alignments.

You can grab the latest update here:

And if you want to see some video tutorials, I made a 3part series here:

Let me know what you think of the new filter:)

TileMaker DOT is now 100% free for everyone

I’ve decided to retire the paid version and merge all those features into the main app. My goal has always been to support the indie community, and I want everyone to have the best tools possible without any barriers

I’ve just pushed a massive update that brings the Modern UI and Dark Mode / Light Mode to the free version. I’ve also spent a lot of time under the hood fixing bugs to make the whole experience smoother and more stable

The app is now fully on par with what used to be the "Pro workflow" version, meaning you get the advanced workflow, the clean UI, and all the export features for free

If you’re new to the tool, I made a quick tutorial to get you started:

Hey everyone! I just pushed a major update for TileMaker DOT that I think a lot of you are going to find useful.

I’ve just added full TMX and TSX export support to the v1.9 on itch.io. My goal is to make this the easiest starting point for 2D level design, so I wanted to make sure these formats were available for everyone to use.

If you’re working in Unity, Godot, or GameMaker or other engines, this is a huge time saver. You can design your maps in TileMaker DOT and drop them straight into your engine without having to rebuild anything from scratch.

Grab the latest update here:

If you need a quick walkthrough on how the tool work, I made a tutorial series here:

I'm really trying to make this a go-to tool for the community, so if you have ideas for what I should add next, let me know in the comments, preferably on my itch page! Also, if you’ve been using the tool and like it, please consider leaving a rating on the itch page. It helps the project stay visible and keeps me motivated to keep adding features xD

Hi guys, I just pushed a new update specifically for the Pro Workflow version of TileMaker DOT. This week wasn't about adding flashy new buttons, but about making the ones we already have work faster and better.

I spent some time refactoring the core logic to make the app feel smoother when you're handling large maps or massive asset libraries. I also took the time to update the in-app Legend (the help guide) to make it easier for new users to get started. I also took some time to do some Bug fixes for a more stable dev environment.

If you’re new to the tool or want to see how the Pro features like the Spreadsheet Importer and Dark Mode actually work, I’ve got a full tutorial here that covers the whole workflow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fiajGU32Jg

I know these "under the hood" updates aren't as exciting as a new tool, but for professional work, stability is everything.

If you’ve already picked up the Pro version, the update is ready for you to download on itch. If you haven't tried it yet, the Pro version is what unlocks the Godot/Unity exports, dark mode, and advanced tools.

Check it out here: https://crytek22.itch.io/tilemakerdot

Thanks to everyone who has been supporting the project! It really helps to keep me going
