I thought I was mixed until I was 12
This is my most embarrassing secret, but it’s genuinely so funny I need to share it.
I grew up not having a dad around at all. I had a single mom and she was so incredible I truly never felt like I needed a dad or wanted any relationship with him. I only asked to see what he looked like a couple times, only enough to have a general picture. My mom had this one Polaroid of her, him, and their friend at some party. Now I don’t know why I thought this, as I am pale as snow, but I always assumed the guy in the photo who was black was my dad. My mom never pointed to what one was my dad but she didn’t think she had to given the fact that I am not black. I never even looked him up on social media or anything which I SHOULD HAVE. I told all my friends I was mixed and would talk about being black in China where there is a lot of racism. I cringe remembering it genuinely what was wrong with me. I found out the truth when I was talking to my mom about slavery ( we were learning about it in school at the time ) and I told her how sad it made me feel to think that my ancestors were probably slaves. She looked at me like I was an idiot. She said our ancestors were probably not involved with slavery in America because we’re Chinese. I was like wtf?? No. I’m half black so my ancestors were slaves. I said this thinking she somehow forgot I was mixed, and she just laughed in my face. She asked me why the hell I think I’m black and I told her that my dad is black so I’m mixed. After she stop genuinely howling in laughter she searches him Facebook and shows me a man who is most certainly NOT BLACK. I am devastated. My entire identity gone, taken from me, even though it was genuinely NEVER EVEN MINE. It messed me up for a while after and I had to tell all my friends I was JUST Chinese and they thought I lied about being mixed for attention. I am so glad nobody In my life knows this but i genuinely think it’s so funny
