How do you respond to "What salary are you looking for?"

Whenever a recruiter asks me this I am reluctant to give a number

The range listed is 60k - 105k. Honestly the position is in LA, I am looking for a minimum of 100k.

Is it okay to say 100k - 120k? I replied with "Salary isn't be the main thing and I would like to meet the team". But the recruiter replied "I need a number to push you through"

I currently make 95k for ref.

What can I do (on the side) as a structural engineer in infrastructure to get into Anduril

I’ve always been told “you lack experience” or for entry level “you are overqualified”

I have designed bridges, high rise structures, went to UCSD for structural engineering. Went back for a masters in CS as well.

What can I do on the side (to build a portfolio) that would make me at least get an interview or be an option

Mechanical Engineer major who received an offer as an entry level controls engineer

Hello,

I am a mechanical engineering major who received an offer for a controls design position in oil and gas.

I’m curious if controls engineering is a good career that pays better than mechanical engineering and what the future outlook of PLC/Controls is.

They are saying 5 days on site and in SoCal offering 94k.

I could use some advice since I am new to this. They did mention I would be using PLC and RsLogix

Is it normal to have an interview cancelled <24 hours?

Entry level / mid level role. Was really looking forward to the opportunity to interview.

Just got an email saying the interview is cancelled (no reasoning) just an email showing the calendar event being called off.

I’ve honestly had a horrible experience (but yet it can be normal in this industry so that’s why I’m asking). First interview, recruiter never showed up. Rescheduled. Then interviewer was 30 mins late. Then ghosted.

Now with a different company. My interview gets cancelled when I requested Time off at my current company.

Am I getting the rough end or is this typical?

How long after a recruiter reaches out for an interview?

A recruiter reached out to me for a L3 position in Sunnyvale and Fort Worth. The asked for my salary range. I told them that it depends on the city really and asked if they could provide a typical range for each city since the COL is different from where I live.

They replied saying they need a range to push me through. I just replied saying 110-150k (this is an engineering position)

Haven’t heard anything since. Was my range not realistic? Did this prevent me from getting an interview?

Painted our house 6 months ago now random green spots all over

I honestly don’t know why this is happening, but we have random green spots throughout the house and the painter doesn’t even realize what is going on

We used Sherwin-Williams paint

Has anyone experienced this?

Had 3 rounds of interviews, 4th one coming up and I kind of don't think I'll like the job. Should I still go?

It's in a very niche field (Radiation) and I'm worried it will Pigeonhole my career (I'm 3 yoe currently). The commute would be 45 mins too.

Honestly I'm quite burnt out, 30% of my team got laid off 3 weeks ago and 20% just left as of today.

I know I need a new job but. I don't want to step into a situation where I will be back in the same situation doing work I don't enjoy

Also I know it’s not a guarantee that I’ll even get the job

Stop code errors. Systems randomly shuts off. IT Says it’s a BIOS (2.7.3) error on Dell pro max 16

My computer iust randomly shuts down, it’s unpredictable.

I get these codes when the “your computer needs to restart” screen shows up

**Stop code: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (Ox1E)**

(This shows about 80% of the time)

**Stop code: Registry_filter_driver_exception (0x135)**
What failed: PGDriver.sys

Have you met anyone that has transitioned careers and landed a role?

I am a structural engineer (4 yoe, MS in Structural Eng, MS in CS, and a PE) and have worked on skyscrapers, bridges, water tanks, etc. All infrastructure. I am looking to land a role as a structural engineer in aero/defense. I apply to entry level but people say I am too experienced yet for mid level, I lack exp.

Looking for some of your success stories I guess? I see some positions at Anduril but not sure if people would value my experience.

Do you need to hit every requirement to be considered?

I really want this one position at a LM location that isn't as big as the majority of them since it is clise to my family, although it states "Security + Certification is required".

I can get that down the line, but just curious if LM is strict on these requirements. I meet the rest of them.

Recruiter asked for Salary Range but not sure about the COL

A reruiter reached out and asked me to answer a few questions regarding two L-3 Engineering positions (Littleton and Fort Worth). I know Forth Worth (TX) has no income tax but not sure about the grand scheme of things.

I live in LA (CA) right now and everything is expertise, I don't want to provide some crazy range. Is there any website you would recommend that serves as a good estimate? Or im also open to hearing your thoughts.

Both positions are for Aero

Did you take a break from applying to land a role? Is it a bad idea?

For context I have been applying since August and have only gotten 3 interviews (3, 4, and 4 rounds not including the HR screen).

I don’t have your traditional background. I have:

BS in Structural engineering
MS in structural engineering
MS in computer science

3 years of experience in structural design but in infrastructure. I have been trying to get into aerospace targeting stress, airframe, or any mechanical/structural role.

Applied to entry level (told I’m overqualified) applied to mid level (told me I lack experience).

I’m honestly burnt out, yet nothing has even started. I use my weekends to do side projects like stress analysis in CAD or random stuff I enjoy and find online just to gain some sort of exposure.

I’m considering just taking a break from applying but worry that will just hurt me. Little things are starting to get to me. For instance, I had an interview with NGC scheduled and they didn’t even show up.

My last interview I thought I landed the role but they told me they went with someone with more experience and referred me to a couple other roles (I appreciate them telling the recruiter to help me land a role)

Also I have seen less jobs pop up

Did you jump ship after getting a PE?

Pretty disheartening that everything is going up in price except my salary.

I’m 5 YOE, PE, Transportation industry, making 95k in Orange County, CA.

Is this normal? I like my team right now but I’m sick of living in a studio to save money. It’s been about 9 months since I got my PE.

What roles should I target to increase my chances of getting a role given my background?

I have been trying to break into Lockheed Martin for about a year now without much success. I have not received a callback, and I feel like I am in a somewhat unique position because my background is in structural engineering for critical infrastructure, including bridges, high-rise buildings, dams, and water tanks. However, I would like to transition into the aerospace industry because it aligns more closely with my interests.

My background includes:

• B.S. in Structural Engineering
• M.S. in Structural Engineering
• M.S. in Computer Science
• Professional Engineer (PE) License
• 4 years of experience in structural design and analysis

I feel that if I am going to make the transition to aerospace, now is the time to do it while I am still relatively early in my career. The challenge I am running into is that entry-level roles often view me as having too much experience, while mid-level roles tend to require direct aerospace experience in areas such as propulsion, flight structures, or aerodynamics.

To help bridge that gap, I have been building a portfolio of personal projects on the side, including a UAV altitude controller in Python, stress analysis of aircraft components in SolidWorks, and other engineering-focused projects.

I have also interviewed with several defense contractors and made it to the final rounds, but I often lose out to candidates with more direct aerospace experience. For reference Northrop took me 5 rounds then told me they went with "someone more senior".

Given my background, do you have any advice on how to position myself more effectively for aerospace roles? I would greatly appreciate any insights you may have.

General Atomics Interview Timeline

I had an interview at GA a couple weeks ago and haven’t heard anything.

I know there’s Memorial Day so people were off and 9/80.

Just curious when it’s appropriate to follow up and ask?

Recruiter told me that after my interviews there were a couple more people who had interviews after me (they were working on scheduling them).
