Recipes with fresh dill

I have a beautiful bunch of fresh dill. Other than pickles*, what dish(es) would you suggest? I love dill, and I know that it’s great with salmon, eggs, chicken, etc. I’m looking for a recipe that will use a lot of it.

* If someone has a recipe for a half sour pickle that tastes exactly like it came from a Jewish delicatessen, bring it on! I’d have to use store-bought (or hopefully farmers market) cucumbers, but I have all of the spices/whole seeds I would need, and I have Ball Pickle Crisp granules.

Thanks!

LBL/FDL, 2.5 weeks PO - current and before pics

Starting with a pic of my cat to ease you into the post-surgical photo and my before photo, which also isn’t pretty.

I had my LBL/FDL (no muscle repair) on June 12. I’m thrilled with the results so far. There’s still swelling, obviously, and the red marks are all from blisters that formed under my dressings (keep an eye on those Tegaderms!).

I’m 60, and I lost 130 lbs.

My recovery so far: a post of encouragement

I’m 1 week PO — LBL, FDL, BA.

Note: I didn’t have MR, which is the primary reason I’m having a comparatively easy time with my recovery. I can’t imagine how painful that must be, and my heart goes out to you if you’re in that position. 🩷

I’m amazed at how good I felt even a couple of days after my surgery. I did have an ON-Q pain reliever pump for the first 3 days, but I didn’t (and won’t) need the oxycodone I was prescribed. I’ve only taken Tylenol twice, and one of those times was because I had a headache. They have me on gabapentin, but I’m not even taking the full dose.

The most painful thing for me is lying on my back. It’s uncomfortable for the incision, but totally manageable. The first few days, coughing hurt like a MF, but it’s gotten way better.

My personal challenge has been very low blood pressure (top number ranging from 60s to 80s), but I tend to run low anyway. I fainted on my front steps coming home from my follow-up appointment (3 days PO) and I guess I overdid it in the heat. Luckily my husband (sort of) caught me, so I didn’t land very hard or do any damage.

I actually have to remind myself not to do too much, so I don’t wreck anything. I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging or gloating, but there are so many terrible experiences people have posted about that I want to share the other end of the spectrum, so people facing a similar combination of procedures can maybe reduce their fear and anxiety.

I was so afraid of what recovery would entail, but it’s been much easier than I expected. Feel free to ask me any questions about my experience. Best wishes to you all! 🩷

My hoyas are outgrowing their cabinet after 6 weeks

I had a collection of compact hoyas, perfect for this small IKEA cabinet. I put them in the cabinet maybe 6 weeks ago (maybe less) and they’ve exploded with growth. The chouke in particular, and it seems to have a peduncle too! Side view to show how many vines are hunting for a trellis. I like the crowded hoya jungle look, but I’m concerned they’re going to grow together in a tangled mess (and wrap themselves around the lights). Two Barrina T5s per shelf, 12 hours a day. GT’s Flower Focus, plus TPS Silica and SuperThrive, with every watering, in diluted quantities. And Gnatrol.

Bulk share glitch

When I bulk share my closet, I filter by Available. When I filter this way, the 41st item in my closet disappears. The item isn’t always the same one, but it’s the one in the 41st position, and when I share, that item drops to the bottom of my closet. I have my items grouped in “departments,” so I have to fix this every time I share. This is driving me nuts. Has anyone else experienced it? I’ve tried making edits to the items, relisted them, double-checked that the items are actually categorized as available, and I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app.

Post-op questions for serious houseplant people 🪴

I’m having a lower body lift, and a possible FDL. Without muscle repair; with butt augmentation.

I have great help at home, fortunately. I’ll be fed, watered, and assisted as much as I need. But I’m so worried about my plants.

I know I can’t carry water for a while. But when should I reasonably expect to do even the smallest plant chores? I know everyone is different, but I just wish I had an idea of best- and worst-case scenarios.

If you’re still reading, you might be a plant person too. 💚 My little jungle is 140 plants, mostly aroids, with 26 of them on sphagnum moss poles. A few small collections (carnivores, fittonias) need a lot of attention.

I’ll be recuperating solo in a large room (see photos of a few of my roommates). I’m moving as many plants as I can (plus 30 propagations in glass containers) into that room. Even if I can’t do anything, I can make sure someone else does.

I’m grouping everything else by care requirements to make it easier for my husband if I need him to pitch in. Which he will, but he’s already got enough to do.

I’m in the process of putting watering inserts (the IKEA ones) in all the moss poles, and my husband will keep them filled. I’m going to pre-portion packets of nutrients for him to put in the water.

If you have a large collection, how did you make it work during your recuperation? What else can I do to prepare, and how worried should I be about what’s ahead of me, at least in the context of plant keeping? I’m worried that I’m underestimating how sick I’m going to be for a while.

Unfashionable request

I’m looking for something that is the opposite of fashion: a lightweight, short sleeve or sleeveless, button front, knee length nightgown or house dress. Something your grandma might wear.

I’m having a lower body lift / butt augmentation in about two weeks (I lost 130 lbs). I need something to wear during my recuperation that’s comfortable, not too warm, and has a full button front so my drains will be accessible (and it’ll be easy to get on and off).

I’m seeing a lot of polyester, but I would like something that’s at least a blend with as much cotton as possible. I’m going to need a few of them, and I‘ll never wear them again, so I don’t want to spend a lot of money if I don’t have to.

If anyone reading this has been through this procedure and wants to offer advice on any aspect of recovery, I’ll gratefully take it!

Kerrii advice

I got this little kerrii cutting today as part of a FB Marketplace haul. Should I prop it in water or sphagnum moss? Any other tips? I’m new to hoyas and this is my first kerrii. I understand they’re slow growers. Do they also take a long time to develop roots?

Please help me prep!

I lost over 130 lbs (F 5’4”) and I have a lot of loose skin. The first surgeon I saw found me to be a good candidate for a LBL, and referred me to a colleague, as he doesn’t do that procedure himself. I’ve researched the second surgeon, and saw her last Wednesday. I feel good about her and decided to move forward with it. I’m in Boston, and the doctor is Amy Colwell. The procedure will be performed at Massachusetts General Hospital.

She had an opening for June 12, and I took it. (Otherwise I would have had to wait until the end of the summer.) This gives me less than three weeks to prepare.

I’m having the LBL, possibly with a FDL (she’ll make that determination during surgery). I will not need MR. She also suggested buttock augmentation (my own tissue), which I agreed with.

I would love to hear from people who have had that specific combination of procedures. I have so many questions, and so little time!

A few of my concerns:

What kind of recovery am I looking at, considering I am not having MR? The doctor estimated that I would be able to work from home after a couple of weeks. Does that sound right to those of you who have had this done? Without MR, is the whole thing less difficult than I anticipate?

Do I need to get a power lift recliner, again considering I won’t be recovering from MR? I put a deposit on one today, but I don’t really have the room for it and I don’t want one long-term. I do have access to an adjustable bed.

How soon can I climb stairs?

Am I going to need a bidet?

For those who are completely healed, did you have a significant change to your clothing size and/or weight? (I’m already at the low end of the healthy BMI range for my height, and I am a little concerned that this is going to make me underweight on paper.)

What do I need to do to prepare?

What should I expect during recovery?

What else do I need to know?

Thank you so much in advance!

Question for moss poll people

This is my Fernando’s Fire. Usually when I do a moss pole, I plant two vines and keep the stronger one once they take off. (I don’t have any idea if this is a worthwhile practice, but it’s what I do.) I forgot to take off the second vine on FF (see photo 2) and they’re both pretty chonky. Those leaves are about 9” long.

Should I remove the second vine now? I would think it’s only going to size up more, and they’re going to fight for resources. I would prop the one I remove.

Also, the roots are coming out of the bottom (photo 3). Does it want a bigger pot? If so, would that still be the case if I take out a vine?

Interview suits, round 2

A couple of weeks ago I posted some suits I was considering for interviewing. I appreciate the feedback I received, and I’m back to show you the suits I selected, along with the shoes (which I already owned).

One commentor implied that these are old lady suits, because she asked if I was 60. I am 60, so I guess it’s appropriate for me to wear old lady suits. 😂 My turkey neck is a permanent accessory.

Question: do I have to wear stockings? I really hate them.

Let me know what you think! (I’m “mature” enough to handle criticism. 😉) Note: as much as I would love to wear heels, I have a fake ankle, and I can’t physically wear them.

Fittonia Factory

I just gave my mixed fittonia planters a much-needed trim. The pink angel variety is growing like mad, and was crowding out the others. I’m propping all the cuttings in water with Prop Drops. In the past I’ve used rooting hormone and put them directly into soil with some degree of success, but today I’m in the mood to use every last unoccupied propping vessel in my collection. (I buy glassware at the thrift store.)

Glitch or my mistake?

When I bulk share my closet, I filter by available items and then select all to share. I have one item that disappears from the listings when I filter by availability, even though I’ve confirmed it’s correctly labeled. Is there another tag in the listing that I need to edit? I can’t figure out what it would be.

My Shangri-la is turning into a Champs Elysees

I just cut off a piece of my Shangri-la to prop, and I noticed the new leaves are losing their crinkly texture. But they have gills now, like a Champs Elysees.

Does anyone know what’s going on here? Or do Shangri-las always have gills, but we just don’t see them because they’re so curled up?

Jade?

I had a random cutting that took about seven months to root in water. It was found mangled on the floor of Home Depot last summer, and there were jades and goldens hanging above it.

When it finally did get decent roots, I put it on a moss pole and it TOOK OFF. That newest leaf is 9”!

The discoloration on the bottom leaves is damage, not variegation. This plant gets a lot of light (12 hours/day) and there isn’t a hint of variegation on the healthy leaves. Do we think it’s a jade, or is it a low variegation golden?

Structure question

We own a manufactured home and I’m shockingly ignorant about its construction. I understand it had to be transported in sections, and I believe they join at the master bedroom/living room wall in the floor plan I’ve included.

What is going on inside that wall? We use the master bedroom as a second living room/family room, and we’re trying to locate a stud to mount a large screen TV. We’re hitting something solid behind the drywall that’s much larger than a stud. We can’t figure out if it’s a vertical object or horizontal. Before we cut out a section of drywall to see what the deal is, can anyone give us any insight? I’m guessing it has something to do with how the sections of the house are attached, but I’m probably wrong lol.

The house was manufactured in Quebec in 1998 by Marcoux Homes and we’re in Massachusetts.

Shangri-la reverting?

My little two-vine shangri-la on a moss pole had a rough winter in my underheated basement. It has been relocated to the upstairs for rehabbing, but I noticed the new growth is coming in without the curl on both vines. Is this due to trauma, or some other factor? In spite of its cold environment, it was receiving adequate light and diluted nutrients the whole time. Will the curl come back?

What’s happening here?

I’ve had this nepenthes for about 10 months and it’s always seemed really happy, but all of a sudden it’s got a few leaves turning black.

Is this normal? Is there something I need to fix?
