For those who don't wanna watch the video, it's a comedy skit ranting about how Anglicisms have "made Japanese worse" since it is both harder and longer to read and it invalidates the work learning kanji and native Japanese words. An example he gave was「ニューインフォメーションがネゴシエーションとパブリックオピニオンをインフルエンスした。」vs. 「最新情報が交渉と世論に影響を与えました。」

I kinda feel this learning German, since Denglisch terms, while super convenient for me, also have pronunciations inconsistent with both German spelling and English pronunciations (<A> in "das Laptop" is not /a/ but /ɛ/, which is not English /æ/) making it sometimes unpredictable, and sometimes it's jarring for me to hear English terms and slang in otherwise formal language where more native terms would be expected (i.e. in the news)

I know the main function of these words is to pair them with auxiliary verbs for extra tense/mood information. (i.e. Мен кітапты оқып отырмын. I am reading the book. / Ол қазақша оқи алады. He can read Kazakh.)

But are these kinds of words used outside of such constructions?

Ever since I was a kid, I always considered :P as being a derp face with a tongue sticking out, due to how the mouth is straight and the tongue is off to the side. Sometimes I use it as a less serious form of ":/"

Yet I see a lot of people use it as a playful face like the corresponding emoji 😛 which is clearly smiling; if I wanted to express that I'd just use the emoji instead or maybe :>

Me and my friends are playing Liminal Industries (launching through Curse), and every now and then when playing, I experience these sudden frame drops PC-wide. They're for me only, when streaming through Discord my friends see full regular frames.

Killing any process (Minecraft, Chrome, Firefox, Discord, Curse) doesn't solve the issue. The only fixes I've found is either to just fully restart my PC, or to alt-tab into Firefox (haven't test anything further yet to see if it's context specific or if switching to other applications works).

Any ideas on what may be causing my frames to die?

Hallo! Ich (24m) suche nach einem/einer Language-Exchange Partner*in, mit dem/der ich mein Deutsch über können. Derzeit schätze ich mich als B2 Sprecher (habe die Prüfung noch nicht belegt um dies zu bestätigen), allerdings gibt es mir einen Verwendungsmangel, weil ich in den USA lebt und deswegen es ist nicht nötig, Deutsch in meinem Alltag zu benutzen. Das langfristige Ziel ist, C1 zu bekommen– gut genug, dass ich Deutsch zuversichtlich lehren und wohl in DACH überleben kann.

Auf Deutsch möchte ich nur natürliche Interaktion während Aktivitäten, damit ich spontanes Sprechen und Denken und Hören auf Deutsch verbessern kann. Auf Englisch kann ich dir helfen bei allem, was du brauchst; ich habe große Interesse auf Linguistik und Sprachenpädagogik, also ich kann klare Erklärungen bei Sprachenverwirrung auch geben.

When it fails, I either get "Internal Exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset" or "Disconnected".

For more context, we're playing Liminal Industries (https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/liminal-industries), we had a 4 hour play session yesterday with no issue, and also are VC'ing through Discord with no issue.

I allowed OpenJDK Platform Binary through my firewall settings and I flushed my DNS as described here (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC/issues/MC-227913). The server logs also don't point to anything useful as to what exactly is happening, just saying "Took too long to log in". I added this (-Dfml.readTimeout=120 -Dfml.loginTimeout=120) to my additional arguments in curseforge, but it didn't seem to do anything. Lowering chunk settings didn't do anything either, nor did restarting my router.

I'm not sure what other fixes are available to me.

Stayed up late to do this, my inner Faruzan did not want to let this go.

This was inspired by u/Jazzlike-Razzmatazz1's recent post, though they did not go very in depth which slightly disappointed me, so I went deeper and translated what I could find from her animations.

BTW I am not someone educated in either Latin or Ancient Greek, just a linguistics nerd. I'll gladly accept corrections from anyone better versed in these languages!

Normal Attacks

This section will correct a bit from the original post as when I double-checked them, they seemed to have been slightly mis-transcribed and mistranslated by the translator that u/Jazzlike-Razzmatazz1 used.

NA1

Her first normal attack consists of multiple lines of text with one that's clearly readable. This line is translated as "DECHOU TEN HEGEMONIA_" (last letter is either N or U) which corresponds to Ancient Greek "δέχου τήν ἡγεμονῐ́ᾱν". This can be roughly translated as "Accept the supremacy!" (an imperative command, presumably telling whoever is being attacked by Nicole to submit to her).

NA2

Nicole's second attack spawns "DECIDUNT TUR", though due to how the attack is animated (R is barely visible most of the time), it's possible that the second word continues on and is just not fully rendered here. DECIDUNT is Latin for "they fall down". TUR could be short for "TURRES", or "towers", which would make the full sentence "The towers fall down", though this is purely a guess.

This line as well as another line found in Nicole's Skill could be in reference to a stanza found in Horace's second book of Odes, specifically the third stanza of the 10th poem, which reads in English as:

>The vast pine is more often moved
by the wind and the high towers fall
with a more serious fall and the lightning
strikes the highest mountains.

NA3

The third attack renders out the words "SEMENEI OLETHROS MONOS", with the line partially repeating the first word at the end of itself. In Ancient Greek, this roughly translates to "To the holy, a sole destruction".

It is interesting to note that in this Greek sentence, the "holy" is a singular feminine entity, though which entity this could be referring to I'm not sure (Celestia maybe?). I'll leave the theorizing to those more caught up on the lore.

Nicole's skill creates a shield which has flickering text that slowly scroll to the left. The text is composed of four different lines, from top to bottom:

1: SEMENEI OLETHROS MONOS – This is the same as her NA3

2: FERIUNT FULGURA MONTIS – Latin for "Lightning strikes mountains." Not sure what this could be referring to, if anything. Does sound cool though.

This line as well as Nicole's NA2 could be in reference to a stanza found in Horace's second book of Odes, specifically the third stanza of the 10th poem, which reads in English as:

3: PARCAM SUBIECTIS – This is hard to translate for me, as someone who has never studied Latin. Per Wiktionary, "SUBIECTIS" can either mean the "thrown" (the past adjective form of to throw) or "subjects" (as in subjects of a ruler), while "PARCO" (base form of "PARCAM") can mean a number of things: to be frugal, to spare/have mercy, to omit, and to abstain.

My guess here would be that "SUBIECTIS" means "subjects" and "PARCO" "to spare/have mercy", leading to the sentence "I will have mercy on (the) subjects." I would guess this is referring to humans as they are the subjects of the Heavenly Principles, and Nicole as an Angel is wont to help them out.

Alternatively, this and the next line might be in reference to Virgil's sixth book of Aenid, an epic poem telling the story of Aeneas who traveled to Italy after Troy fell and became the ancestor of the Romans. The full quote goes:

From what I can find, Latin uses the masculine gender for a group of mixed genders as well as for an all-masculine group, much like Spanish plural pronouns. Again, no idea which group this could be referring to in Genshin.

Looking through her second idle animation where she ponders while twirling her pen, I found 6 unique lines of text that constantly repeat themselves before she accidentally drops her pen:

1: SI OMNIA FICTA – "If everything is fictitious"

Potentially a reference to Ovid's 13th book of Metamorphoses, where it's found as a description of Scylla, a mythical sea monster who with her counterpart Charybdis haunt an ocean strait.

This is where lack of Latin study is getting me. "IPSE" is a determiner, akin to English "the", which seems to additionally be emphatic/selective in nature. "DIXIT" is the 3rd person singular form of "DICO" (to say) whose temporal tense (past, present, future) seems to depend on context. Maybe "This will say"? Latin nerds please help me out here.

(Thanks to Cloud Retainer's comment) This is a Latin phrase which represents an assertion without any proof, or in other words saying "that's just how it is" in order to defend a claim. It was coined by Cicero in his work De Natura Deorum (On the Nature of Gods) when describing the types of arguments used by disciples of Pythagoras.

3: RISUM TENEATIS – "Would you all hold laughter"

"TENEO" (base form of "TENEATIS") seems to have several definitions, all revolving around the possession of something, whether literally or metaphorically. Thus, the exact meaning of this sentence might actually be different.

(Thanks to TinyBluePebble's comment) This Latin phrase (link in Italian) is likely taken from Horace's Ars Poetica, specifically from the first 5 lines. As translated (by Leon Golden) into English , the full sentence is:

Around 4 PM EDT today, Canvas's parent company Instructure experienced a hacking attack by ShinyHunters, a hacking and extortionist group. In their attack, they uploaded this image to Canvas explaining their intents:

This was quickly taken down by Instructure, who replaced it with a "currently undergoing scheduled maintenance" message.

In the .txt file attached to the hackers' message, they list ~1300 schools and universities whose users' sensitive data have been hacked. UNC-CH is in this list, as well as Western, ECU, and NCCU.

The sensitive data involved was comprimised in an earlier data breach that occurred on May 1st. Said data includes names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages sent among users. However, Instructure has found no indication that information such as passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers or financial information have been comprimised by the hackers. According to ShinyHunters, the data breach affects over 275 million people across nearly 9,000 schools (Bleeping Computer)

UNC ITS has released a short statement regarding the attack; because the last day of finals is also today, the attack should not have affected exams. It may however affect grade submissions, which are due on May 11th.

Sometimes I do this myself when I communicate more formally/explicitly, i.e. "the company to which he was partnered to". I'm aware this is strictly wrong grammatically, but I am wondering how common this is among other English speakers.
