Feeling awful or yelling!

My son has gotten back into throwing things, and unfortunately this time it’s become expensive. Most recently, he broke our TV ).

When I see him pick something up that looks like he’s about to throw it, my first instinct is to yell. Not out of anger, but because I’m hoping it distracts him long enough for me to get to him and take it away. Sometimes it works, but other times he grabs it and throws it immediately.

The part I’m struggling with is that my reaction can sound pretty intense in the moment, and I always feel awful afterward. At the same time, we can’t just stand by and let him keep breaking things.

For those who have dealt with this, what has worked for you? How do you intervene quickly without escalating the situation or making your child feel worse?
