When I was about 10, my dad told me I was his favorite son (I have 2 brothers). It didn’t feel good. It felt like a burden. Here’s a song I *think* I’ve finished about it through the lens of the biblical story of Noah and the Ark. I’m interested to hear any feedback.

Lyrics for anyone interested:

The Flood

For forty days and forty nights
You swell up the rivers to your heart's delight
For you
For only you

Rain coming in from the country side
There's a riot in the streets won't you come inside
With me
To be with me

And oh
Why am I so terrified
Of everything

I serve the Lord with all my might
I pour out my heart in the dirty street light
For you
For only you

And do you love your children when we let you down
Now the city's underwater and you let them drown
But me
Why only me?

And oh
This charm you've placed around my neck
This crown you've placed upon my head
It's heavy
It's heavy

Tell me tell me
Show me show me
You blind my eyes
Your rain it stings
What is this love
The storm it brings?

Lift me up and I'll sail away
On the backs of my brothers in a nameless grave
For you
For only you

An empty sea, this empty space
My empty eyes, when you hide your face
From me
From only me

And oh
This charm you've placed around my neck
This crown you've placed upon my head
It's heavy
It's heavy

This song is called "Death of the Party" and it's a punchy pop song about a broken relationship. What do you think? Should I produce it?

I grew up in a household ruled by fundamentalist religion. This song is to my younger self, and anyone else caught in the tangle of fear and shame of organized religion. I think it's my best work lyrically.

They taught it to you solemnly before you learned to speak

It was a lie for them, and now it’s one for you

They gave you every truth before they told you you could seek it

They deny it when you find a different truth

Yes they deny you when you find a different truth

But when you fall apart

you find your heart

You struggle to discern and unearth all the little secrets

to guide your feet and guide your heart and guide your hands

And if it were your own designs you would never believe it

You don’t see yourself, I hope one day you can

No you see see yourself, I know one day you can

Cos when you lose all else

you find yourself

And don’t you know that it will be okay for you to

just let go

of the stranglehold of faith, of fear and shame and

You will know what’s right for you

For you

And when the mold they put you in, it makes you feel confined

You’re so deceived and it’s so difficult to be

The truth you need, the shape you are is already inside you

Just believe in it, your truth will set you free

Yeah just believe yourself, your truth will set you free
