tl;dr - Dess is unwillingly trapped by the knight, and the thing Kris promised was to help Carol break Dess out

This assumes dess is the knight* and the voice lost in the code,
and Carol is the person you get phone calls from

Whatever asgore failed to prevent with dess, resulted in her getting trapped in the bunker, and engulfed in darkness, swallowed by the knight. Meaning she's stuck in a frozen, unchanging comatose state, which is how she could've survived in the bunker for so long, and why the voice lost in the code can't do anything to escape.
This could also explain possiblities for the knight having existed prior to Dess, as they're separate entities, with Dess making the knight stronger, and giving it the ability to travel in the light world

I think the knight and dess are separate entities that, after so long together, now rely on each other. Like Kris and the soul, or mew mew and the ghost.
Darkness must surround dess for them to be in the light world, which is why they always take people to the bunker at night, and hide in closets once the fountains are sealed.

So far, the knight appeared in chapter 2 to make the dark fountain in the library, where it's explicitly stated that there's a closet "big enough to hide somebody" (I'll get back to this).
Chapter 3 takes place solely at night, with the knight taking undyne through the light world to get to the shelter.
Chapter 4's dark world is created in the gloomy rain, and once the final fountain is sealed, you can visit a closet in the back. Interacting with it has Kris turn the door handle, and nothing more, as if someone was hiding in there, and Kris didn't want us, the player to know who. This goes back to chapter 2's closet as well.
In chapter 5, the knight only shows up at the very end to take asgore away, and upon Susie and Kris going outside, it's revealed to be night.

Ralsei, and I assume the knight, as they were present for all of chapter 4, and if they didn't know it before hand, they had ample time to see it, both already know the whole prophecy. If the knight wanted the world to remain in darkness, and not end up saved, would they not take a different approach?

The prophecy's final panel talks about something bad happening in order to fulfill it. "The final tragedy", that saves both worlds.
What if Kris and Carol are forced to work with the knight towards their ultimate goal to free dess, and must help fulfil the Knight's prophecy to do so.
That's what Kris promised,
To get dess back, no matter the cost.
