Instructors - be careful with attendees putting feet in between carriage and the back, into the well
Last week I was at class and there was an exercise in which you put your foot and leg into the well between the carriage and the back. You keep the knee up close to the bar on the back. And then the back leg is moving the carriage backward and forward. It is a glute and thigh exercise.
What I didn’t realize is that my foot was inside the loop of the back cord which had bowed, which is normal because the carriage has been pulled up to the back which causes that bowing.
And when the exercise was done, we were told to let the carriage float to the front. But I hadn’t pulled my foot out in time and so when that cord pulled taunt, it snapped against the side of my leg just above my ankle. Luckily, I was able to immediately reach for the carriage to keep it from going all the way, and I yanked my foot out. But by then the full weight of that carriage with the cord had done damage to my leg. And I have a very deep bruise as a result.
So the lesson here for instructors is, if you are going to have anyone put their leg in that well on the back, make double sure that nobody is putting their foot through that looped cord which could snap back on their foot when that carriage goes back to the front. You can tell them verbally, but also walk around the room and make sure that nobody is going to have that cord wrapping around their foot.
Update — for clarity, I’m not an instructor! I’m just an attendee. I have no idea why I’m downvoted below for further explaining. 🤔All I’m doing is posting here for instructors to consider the risk of that “well lunge” exercise, which according to others posting here is not an approved exercise. My injury could have been worse, like a broken leg.
