Does a 24” wide or less plate compactor exist?

I can only dig out a 24” wide trench and need to compact the 3/4” clean base as much as possible. Hand tamping would be a pain, for obvious reasons, but I can’t seem to find a rentable plate compactor literally anywhere around me. The plate sizes can be less than 24”, sure… but then the width of the actual machine itself is over 24” always. I also need it to be reversible since I’ll be going forwards and backwards with no room to turn. I’m in Mass.

Cost to fix my mistake?

I’m leaving my apartment and looks like something of mine leaked into the floor and it’s not coming out or lightening up again (could be detergent?)… what do you think my landlord is going keep from my security deposit / what would something like this cost to fix?

French drain grade question

I’m about to install my own retaining wall with a French drain behind it and am wondering about this detail. I’m going to need to step-up my courses since the length of the wall itself is on a slope. Do I need to have the bottom soil of each step-up level like the above picture? Or can I leave the bottom of the trench relatively parallel to the grade of the soil (my drawn-in red line) and then create the step-ups just with the leveling bed below my first course, as long as the bed is the minimum spec of 6”? Don’t I need the bottom of the trench to be sloped in order for water to run downhill? Isn’t that the whole point? I feel like I’m missing something…

French drain man group purchase for New Englanders

Many people on here have already commented over the outrageous shipping pricing of the FDM products. Not to mention, the products themselves, though they are high quality, are also probably a bit overpriced. For the drainage system I want to install, I really want a strong And flexible pipe. Single wall Home Depot stuff is flexible, but will crush over time and definitely let roots in at the joints. All the dual wall stuff has only a teensy amount of flexibility, nevermind triple wall.

I’m in central MA. The cost of 1 “3½ in. High Octane® Armor 8-Slot Perforated Drainage Pipe” at 100 ft is $134.95, supposedly on sale and down from $175. I’d love one 100 ft roll. FDM ships rolls on pallets and one pallet costs $385 to get out here whether it has one roll or its max of four rolls. Posting here in case anyone might be interested in joining forces to split the shipping cost and get the good products we need :)

The almost-perfect setup for me!

Three cats, one with some GI issues. Facing the machine towards the corner keeps the loose poop spray contained to a smaller area of the room. The black pee pads on the wall will need to get changed less often, so I went for the more expensive charcoal-charged odor-absorbing ones. They’re kept up on the wall with Command Strip hooks and small binder clips. Three less expensive pee pads on the floor to *greatly reduce* tracking and pee-paw prints on the wood floors. Diatomaceous earth to sprinkle at the bottom of every drawer liner to kill the summertime pests attracted to the poops. Ozium canisters for even more odor elimination - I probably won’t buy these again; they are not unscented and don’t do a good enough job for my stinky babies. I’ve just read some advice on sprinkling clean litter at the bottom of the liner after a drawer change, and/or ammonia absorbing powder/crystals. I’m intrigued! I’m doing a very gradual transition to Dr. Elsey’s litter from the Whisker brand of Great Litter, which is so dang expensive! I’m hoping Elsey’s dust level will still be ok for my little one with perpetually stuffy sinuses.

Thought I’d share! And would love feedback if you’d like :)

Feedback on my research? Constructive criticism requested.

Hi all! I'm looking to potentially purchase a full setup to use as a side-gig, and maybe scale it up in the future. My main target will be in the non-commercial restoration field, aka residential trim, doors, windows, (lots of wood) and maybe fire-damage clean-up (a wider array of materials that would take me more time/experience to get the hang of). I don't want to be the annoying "do all my research for me, tell me what to do so I don't have to think." I've done a ton of research, but I feel like the questions I have would be answered by experiential knowledge, which can only come from those who are already in the business, so here we are!

SFX 300W/500W Air-cooled Pulsed Laser Cleaning Machine Specialized Wood Cleaning Wood Paint Remover: I know 300w is the standard for wood cleaning/restoration, but the 500w capability would allow me to be a bit more aggressive with a one-off project that doesn't need as much finesse or precision, but still some.

FilterCart+ W3 mobile filter unit for intermittent to light duty welding and extraction applications: Seems to have good reviews, but I can't seem to find a whole lot of specific info on a good extractor specifically concerning lead paint...? This should do the job, yes? There are specific extractors for laser welding vs this one which is for "regular" welding (mig or tig), but the laser cleaner cleans, it doesn't weld, so going as far as purchasing a laser fume extractor isn't necessary, correct? Does this unit look like it would do a decent job of clearing dust/debris as I laser in order to see my progress, or should I ensure the SFX above also comes with a built in compressor, or that I need to have my own compressor on hand? A paint fume extractor would NOT be for laser cleaning, correct? Even if I have the best respirator, I still should have a fume extractor, correct?

maXpeedingrods 5KW Dual Fuel Inverter Generator: is this overkill? or underkill? I'm still brushing up on my electrical knowledge.

Laser Cleaning: Key Technology of Substrate Surface Morphology and Performance Control or Laser Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications Has anyone read either of these books? Are they worth the purchase?

I know I would need the proper safety gear on top of all this - high quality respirator fitted to me, replacement cartridges, eye pro, sheets/curtains, etc. My questions are mainly about the larger priced items, and if the books are worth it. Are there any other pieces of large equipment I'm missing? I'm in Massachusetts, if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance!

First adverse symptoms of my life, leg pain - got the right supplements and now I can sleep!

I’ve always had a symptom or two, but they were pretty inoffensive. No period for 10 years? Fine! Facial hair? I don’t have to look like a super clean professional in the construction industry; I’ll pluck it when I have time. But the last month? CRAZY leg aching pain waking me up pretty much every night. I’m definitely in chats with my doc to get a cyst scan and whatever other advice she has, but I took to this sub immediately to see what I could do just to be able to SLEEP. Many of y’all swore up and down by magnesium, so I reached out to my prescriber to get the right one, and thought I’d share his advice for anyone looking! Quote:

Supplements: Yes, I would recommend certain ones being;
-Magnesium GLYCINATE (not citrate) which can help with neuromuskular junctions and restorative properties. I would recommend using a product that does not have Melatonin combined with it. Based on the product, the dose range per night would be in the range of 100mg-400mg based on the product. I would recommend the brands of either "Thorne" or "Pure" because of their clean profiles although anything available from a local brick and mortar will also suffice (those brands can be a bit pricey).
-Methylated Folate -or- L-Methylfolate; this supplement helps enhance amino acid availability (protein building blocks) to make what we already ingest from nutrition to be more readily bio-available. The dose would start at 7.5mg for one month then increase to 15mg as maintanence after that.
=There are really no side effect concerns or adverse reactions of concern from these two supplements and I think they would offer benefit.

As for other medications; there are some available that may ease the physical and emotional state changes associated with PCOS/PMOS being either Celexa or Effexor.

End quote. I hope this post is allowed (re brand names) and I hope it helps someone as it did me! Definitely do your own research and talk to your own doc, of course.

Delete if not allowed… I’m suspicious of the care my mother has been receiving… should I be concerned?

Please delete if this is an intrusive question that doesn’t belong in this sub, but I’m hoping to clarify or quell some concerns my aunts and I have been having over my mother’s medical care. Between this year’s mammogram and last year’s, they saw seven large masses in her right breast. After reading, the *radiologist* told her she would probably be getting a mastectomy (malpractice here?). She was indeed referred to a surgeon, but NOT in oncology. After having the single mastectomy and a biopsy of a few lymph nodes, they discovered the “masses” were actually one single large mass, and the lymph node biopsy came back positive. She just had a CT with contrast done with both an IV solution and a solution she drank; a number of additional tests are being run in order to search for cancer anywhere else it might be hiding. If they don’t find anything/much, a PET scan will then be ordered. After these results come in, the surgeon will then refer her to an oncologist at that point. Shouldn’t she have started in oncology in the first place? Shouldn’t all of these tests have been run even before the mastectomy? None of this is sitting right with me or my mother’s sisters, and I just want to advocate for her as hard and as best as I can. Admittedly, I don’t know all of the details since I live at a bit of a distance and I don’t want all of our phone calls to have to contain conversation about illness, but I can try to answer questions here if needed.

Where to find / name for an angled post skirt?

Trying to cover up some of the previous owner’s mess… is there such a thing as a post skirt that can both go over the vinyl ribbing AND be shaped for the 45* angle of this support post to the awning above my deck?

More of a fix-it question rather than design…?

Is there any repairing this? Is covering it up with more pieces of vinyl possible and/or a bad idea? Total demo and replacement? Damage and messy caulking done before I bought the house.

Advice for my front entry? I know I want to paint the door a deep emerald and probably replace the metal with black stuff instead; I have a black iron security/storm door I’m also ready to install; was thinking the underside of the awning could be beadboard (to match the ceiling of the porch) also painted emerald; I’ll be rehabbing the OG rope & weight windows and painting the exterior of the sashes the same emerald; below the white vinyl siding is a visible brick foundation on top of not visible fieldstone. Shutters are black and I’ll be leaving them as is. Roof is heather gray. Should I paint the window and door casing/moulding emerald as well? What should the front side of the awning look like? How does all this sound?

From what I think I know, it’s “just” a matter of supporting the beam with a 4x4 and bottle jack, cutting the old lally with a grinder, sticking a new one of an appropriate length in its place (plumbed, of course), fastening with plates and screws on the top and bottom.

However! Shortcuts were taken in this house before - how do I know that the old column was on a good enough footing for the new one? Should I just pour a new footing for peace of mind? If I’m pouring, should I set the column in the new concrete, or wait til it cures and install like I said above?
