Finally achieved my sub-20 5K!
Well, after two years working slowly towards it, I finally nailed my sub-20 5K with a time of 19:42 at today’s (fairly hilly) Parkrun!
To be clear: I’m aware that this is far from an elite time, but I only started running a few years ago at 40, and I never run more than three days per week, as my goals are balanced between muscle and speed.
I’m including a pic I took yesterday to illustrate to anyone stopping by that you can achieve some modest fitness goals alongside a physique you can be happy with, too.
For some stats, I’m 44 in a couple of weeks, weighing 79kg (in a cut right now), and 180cm tall. I’m also a dad of two boys.
I started lifting kettlebells in 2006, but oscillated between KBs and more bodybuilding-style training over the years.
I got hideously unfit and out of shape after I became a dad in 2015 but pulled things back together after I became consistent again in 2016.
I have a 360° tear in my left shoulder labrum, so I’m no longer trying to push big weights. I lift on an upper/lower/upper schedule each week, as one leg day is enough for me while I’m cutting.
Now that I’ve hit my running goal, I’ll keep cutting for another 4-5kg I think, before running a very slow bulk and adding another lower day.
Feel free to ask any questions!
EDIT: For anyone interested, I also posted this in r/Brogress with a before pic from 2016 as it’s been a bit of a journey: post over there.
EXTRA EDIT: This post is being destroyed over at r/runningcirclejerk (and getting a decent share of downvotes here). They can have their fun! But I know that when I was getting back on the horse after things fell apart as a new dad, seeing what was possible for performance AND physique as a parent was crucial to keep me going as I rebuilt from nothing. It it helps just one person build their discipline, that’s a win for me!
Thanks DICE! Now I’m forced to listen to my kids crying while my wife is cleaning the house. What a horrible weekend you’ve made this.
With people already complaining about Season 4 DICE is about to drop this as Season 5

Do you know? Lol
I remember flying back home to Florida, from this area (guess) every summer and my grandma wrapping these in tinfoil after she had froze them and then stuffing them in my suitcase for my dad.
Hands down my favorite hots, nothing can compare. Driving here every couple years, I have to take a few packs home to MD with me. 🌭 🤤

Intentionally inducing calf spasms / Charley Horse
Hi runners, so Charley Horse seems to be known as a largely involuntary cramping of the calves, potentially linked to electrolyte imbalance, over-use, etc
But the thing is, I seem to have some psychological / physiological desire to intentionally induce cramping in my calves by stretching my legs and flexing my ankles to extremes, especially when lying down (either on bed or couch) after recent moderate-to-strong running efforts. Specifically I will do this flexing until my calves are cramp up and "ripple" on the surface for perhaps 30-40 seconds before naturally releasing. I do take Magnesium supplements and I think have enough salt in my diet, and try to stay on top of hydration.
Is this something shared by others?
Could it be damaging or counter-productive in some way? Oddly, having a fairly good sense of what's going on in my body, I feel like somehow it could be evolutionarily beneficial in terms of inducing further micro tears in muscle which subsequently heal to improved muscle performance, which is why I mentally feel the desire to induce the cramping.
Or am I just weird??
Sabotaged by Zig zagging child 😆
Today was running a park run, and as I was trying to get past the crowd a child zigged and then zagged so I dodged, ran in to a bollard and went absolutely flying.
Powered through but good lord I slid on gravel on my knee and the road rash is now stinging like absolutely crazy 😆 Fun though!
Running belt for guys with bellies? What have been your experiences?
Looking to get a belt but worry if it would be suitable for me if I have a belly. Would it slide down? Would it make me nauseous from the pressure? What have peoples experiences been
Ran my first marathon yesterday but I forgot to start my workout on Strava.
Heartbroken. Does my marathon count still?
