I believe this take adds a completely different perspective to the original community theory, so please read the post before commenting/saying this was already debunked.

This has been a theory that has intrigued me the most within RDR2, and I decided to look at this from a psychological viewpoint since I studied psychology. Most of the community believes the accident may be CTE/concussion; which is responsible for personality changes & aggression- but I feel the trolley accident is the reason Dutch is extremely uncoordinated with decisions later in the game- and older/outdated science could defend the idea that the trolley accident is what caused Dutch’s violent behavior and lack of morals towards the end of RDR2/RDR.

In the cutscene, Dutch takes a massive blow to the frontal lobe; which is what is responsible for decision making. We see Dutch have bright ideas in the beginning, and executing successful bank heists. But towards the end, his ability to form logical reasoning becomes near non existent. His emotions go from charismatic to violent/angry, and his ability to respect/care for human life is gone (previously helped people and genuinely had care).

Knowing this, I would like to propose that he most likely contracted Frontal Lobe Syndrome after the Saint Denis heist rather than it entirely being a concussion. It all lines up because of his behavior and inability to think clearly and his lack of compassion for others. And besides strokes/neurodegenerative diseases; a TBI can cause this.

I did this for fun and didn’t think too much about other theories/the finer details, so correct me if I am missing anything or if I’m wrong. Below, I provided the diagrams I used. The older one is the OUTDATED model (full head) and the second one is our updated understanding of what regions control what.

Edit: Something I forgot to add; CTE is when MULTIPLE TBIs like this occur- it is a neurodegenerative disease that requires multiple traumatic blows to cause damage. Dutch only experiences one to our knowledge, meaning CTE is not responsible.
