Ok so this has escalated quickly. Two months ago I was casually shopping for a rain jacket. Torrentshell, Granite Crest, Triolet, and now I’m eyeing either the Pluma or Free Alpine.

Lifestyle ranges from walking downtown to the office for work, hiking a glacier in Iceland, to camping in the backcountry of Yosemite. Near future goal alpine hike on Mt. Rainer.

Patagonia seems to have every category checked off but then over saturates it with so many product lines. I love that but then hate it.

Both jackets are on sale for $436.99 right now. I already ordered the Pluma, I like the available colors more, and from what I gather it’s a jackET of all trades (just a kickass jacket). One thing about the Super Free Alpine that has me intrigued is the insulated gasket in the hood. Is that a nice to have or it doesn’t matter. Doesn’t appear the Pluma has that.

Fit? I wear a large in the R1 Air Fleece. I would prefer an outer shell that’s more form fitting, even if that means pulling drawstrings. Not a fan of the poncho jacket look.

Pluma or Super Free Alpine?

I know the Luna ultra and most hobbyist gimbals aren’t advertised for sports tracking. But it’s something I’ve tried on and off for a few years with different gimbals and I’ve seen it asked here and on the DJI sub.

Now I absolutely love my Luna Ultra, I’ve barely put it down in the past two days. This afternoon I tried it out at my daughter’s indoor soccer game. And unfortunately it did pretty bad. Now I was about 50 yards away from mid field and sitting on a second level viewing room.

With not many girls around it did excellent tracking regardless of distance and running speed. As soon as there was a crowd of girls, it would lose tracking and wouldn’t lock back on. Now in a different setting, the tracking might be better but I’m not optimistic.

Now something that was pretty bad and I don’t see getting improved is the zoom. Every time you’d zoom in/out from 1x, 2x, 3x, etc there would be a jerk in the camera. This jerk is very noticeable in the recording.

Now this is a very limited sample, so take it with a grain of salt. But my experience with the DJI mobile 8 with my iPhone 17p is leaps and bounds better. The zoom is smooth (that’s an iPhone ability). But the Mobile 8 tracking is very impressive. I can be 50 yards or a little more from my daughter, locked onto her and she will run in and out of crowds and still remain locked on. If tracking loses her it can automatically correct itself. Keep in mind, majority of these girls look the same - all pony tails, similar height, uniform is one of two colors, and similar numbers on the back. The mobile 8 is amazing at tracking.
