What is Baking? Am I Doing Something Wrong?

What exactly is baking? Am I doing something wrong?

As you can see in the first image, the model in the back is my original low-poly model, while the one in front has Smooth applied to it. Honestly, once I apply Smooth to each object, I feel like the model looks significantly higher quality, and I really like the way it looks.

The original low-poly models, on the other hand, feel too sharp and artificial to me because of their hard edges. So I’m trying to solve this by applying bevel and smoothing while staying as close as possible to the original shape, and then using that as part of my baking workflow.

However, no matter what I try, even with different UV layouts and different ways of cutting the UVs, I keep getting shading artifacts when I bake. I always end up with visible lines and unwanted shading around the edges.

Is baking actually intended to solve this kind of problem? Or have I misunderstood what baking is supposed to be used for?

Best Workflow for Baking Scales on a Snake or Dragon Body

What would be the correct workflow for creating a snake or dragon body? My current workflow is to create the base body first, then unwrap the UVs, and after that place the scales.

Once the scales are added, what should the baking workflow look like? Or would it be better to skip creating the scales in ZBrush and create them directly in Adobe Substance 3D Painter instead?

What approach would you recommend? Since the scales protrude outward from the cylindrical shape of the body, could this cause any problems during the baking process?

High-Poly to Low-Poly Baking Workflow

What should the proper workflow be when baking? When I increase the polygon count of my high-poly model using Subdivision, the edges become extremely pronounced. However, when I use Smooth instead, the high-poly model deviates slightly from the low-poly model.

As you can see in the image, there is a small amount of deviation. Could this cause problems during the baking process? What would be the correct approach here?

Best Workflow for Baking Low-Poly Models Without Losing the Original Shape?

I made a low-poly model like this and I want to bake a high-poly version onto it. The problem is that when I duplicate the model and apply Smooth/Subdivision, all the edges become rounded and the original shape starts to get lost, which causes shading errors when baking.

What would be the correct workflow here?

Should I bevel the entire low-poly model before baking? I'm worried that this would unnecessarily increase the polygon count.

Or should I manually add supporting edge loops around the important edges, placing them based on the shape from the front/top/side views?

What is the proper approach for baking a model like this? I'd really appreciate some advice on the best workflow.

Recommended Resources for Substance Painter and UV Unwrapping

Do you have any resources you would recommend for Adobe Substance Painter? Is there a particular person whose tutorials you would recommend watching? I also need some training on UV unwrapping.

Installer bug with new Crimson Desert Repack

Edit 2: I see this post has made the rounds… Aye, not my proudest moment, but lesson learned now. Believe it or not, I’ve literally never heard of Renpy before and have been pirating for 10+ years, and dozens of repacks installed from Dodi. I even took the link from this subreddit to the Dodi website to be sure it’s the correct website, I’m so confused. I guess was just too tired and too excited to play Crimson Desert finally, that I just wasn’t paying attention to what I was clicking.

Also yes, I ran that setup.exe like 15+ times with 0 firewall and left it running for over an hour while I made dinner. I am fucked indeed. I wiped my pc and clean installed Windows, and I’m changing every single one of my passwords still.

EDIT: Guys do I have to freeze my cards saved in Chrome or changing my passwords and logging all sessions out is enough?

As you can see in the video, whenever I click to run the setup the installer appears for a second then disappears. I tried allowing it through firewall, disabling windows defender, checking protection history, nothing fixed it. Any help would be really appreciated please.

Looking for an Unreal Engine Roadmap to Build My First Game

I want to create my own game, and I have been improving myself toward this goal for more than a year. I am proficient with ZBrush, Maya, Blender, Adobe Substance Painter, and Marvelous Designer. At the moment, I want to learn Unreal Engine. Whenever I ask AI or other sources for advice, they usually recommend learning Unity, but I genuinely believe that Unreal Engine will play a much bigger role in the future.

To make the learning process more enjoyable, I could try developing 3D simulation games similar to RimWorld, although this is not a requirement for me. My main objective is to learn as much as possible from a single source. Over the years, I have taken countless courses on game design, and I realized that approximately 95% of the content is the same across all of them. The remaining 5% consists of unique and valuable insights that each instructor happens to teach differently.

This has become quite exhausting because I end up spending hours listening to the same topics repeatedly just to find a small piece of new information. Therefore, I would like to learn from as few instructors as possible while gaining as much knowledge as I can.

With that in mind, could you help me create a roadmap? I would especially appreciate recommendations for Unreal Engine courses and guidance on the order in which I should learn things. I already know Python and C++, and I would like to start this journey as soon as possible without wasting any more time.

Onlar bizim vergilerimizle alem yapan tiyatrocular!
