Any tips or ideas on how to redesign/simplify these characters while still keeping their spirit?

So I recently showed these characters to some professionals and they loved them, but they also said that they need to be simplified and tweaked to emphasize visual hierarchy, readability, and colors.

Are there any ideas you have on how to do that while still keeping the spirit of them? I can give you more info on these characters if you want.
