I've seen many people say oh American oligarchs and politicians are comically evil for funsies, like when it comes to the whole criminalizing homelessness in America.

These people do so because there is a fucking profit motive. Funneling homeless, addicted, or mentally unwell people into prisons guarantees more "marks" for the police department, and more bodies for the prison which grants more funding from the state. Also the poverty-to-slavery pipeline by essentially criminalizing poverty and the conditions it begets more labor, slave labor.

Just wanted to the point that out because the whole "theyre evil for the fun of it" shit is a great example of lack of a material or dialectical analysis of the situation. It also diminishes the core problem that we can actually try to address.

Edit: forgot to mention context, Privatized prisons are a thing in America, and they funnel billions of dollars from the government into the pockets of like 10 or 20 capitalists and their underdog shareholders.
