How to keep an elder engaged

Question for the community but context first.

FIL has been in the emergency room for a week, stabilized and is now in rehab. My wife and I know rehab and a nursing home is the future but MIL (they've been together for seven decades) has convinced herself he is coming back home. But that is another issue.

My question for the group is, what have you done to get the spouse occupied and engaged. The focus has shifted to the MIL, she needs to get out, engage with people, be active, etc and not sit and home and melt into depression.

We started soft launching ideas last night and she continued to find reasons why she can't and that's got to change.

Just curious as to ideas, tips, tricks, hacks or anything.

I know I'm not the first nor will I be the last to deal with this.

John Coltrane books

I am a huge Coltrane fan, my number one across all music.

With that said, was looking at my bookshelf and saw these books, which have read twice.

Anybody want the three books, send me a message. I will mail for free, paying the love of JC forward.

Keep Jazz Alive.

Update - books have been claimed. Thank you all. I think i have a few more jazz books I will offer up soon.

Haymarker and Bar and Kitchen, NYC

Here for Phish. The beer list is phenomenal but lighting absolutely is horrendous so no picture of it.

Having the HF Abner.

Asked the homie where to buy beer (my wife said 'my husband is a snob') and he said you can buy beer to go here.

Well alrighty then.

Stay safe and stay thirsty my friends.

Just venting

It has been a bit since I have put emotions into words but this was quite the weekend supporting my wife and her FIL cognitive decline and its effect on everyone.

Last week: FIL needs surgery to drain cranial fluid
And apparently he has carpal tunnel.

Friday: He says to an artist from Germany 'did yoj and your family kill any Jews?' (My wife and her family are Jewish)

Saturday: weekly market trip was an absolute shitshow with him getting lost and at dinner it is clear he is not in a good place.

Sunday: panic call from MIL and I had to suit up (good think I didn't have beers yet) drive over and assist.

At this point things are getting worse and at an accelerating rate. FIL needs to be in a facility or he is going force MIL into having a stress stroke and die. And end up in a facility anyways.

All in all I am just here supporting my wife as much as I can. This is absolutely brutal for her and nothing can be done until she and her sister get directly involved and make decisions or MIL admits she needs real help.

I know I am not alone on this journey and it is sad that the only real end is the end, and it is inevitable.

Be safe and sane out there people. This shit ain't easy.

Miss them

Music on random. Althea came on.

I legit got emotional. I miss them, the community, and the experience.

Cellarmaker - Orange Julian

Was very excited to try this, knowing that Cellarmaker puts out a great product and I felt this could be really good.

It was a solid beer but not great. Now having had treehouse maybe there was some higher expectations than necessary, which will be addressed tonight after I have another one.

Good, just not at the level of their usual deliciousness. IMHO.

Stay safe and stay thirty my friends.

Update - having the second (and last one) right now, given that I lowered expectations, it is a better beer that I initially thought. But not close to the implied play on Treehouse.

Tonight's indulgence

Went out of my comfort zone of IPA. Want some crispy pilsner action, I was not disappointed.

New Ghostown Beer

They just do not miss.

I also don't know what it is, but there is a clear Ghost Town flavor to all their beers that I absolutely love.

Major props to the best in the Nickel-Dime right now.

Stay safe and stay thirsty my friends.

Eagle Glen Corona, CA

Played Eagle Glen today and it was a challenge. Normally playing the Long Beach rota I felt comfy and confident with my game.

Today playing a slope of 131 with off line shots equaling a lost ball and a stroke, I learned so much about the state of my game. I went 48-45.

Fairways and tee boxes were a little rough but the course was enjoyable and I can't want to get back.

Love the LBC

Had to be behind the orange curtain today for work.

What a relief to get to PCH, pass Whole Foods and be back in Long Beach and get the stench of Huntington Beach off of me.

I just wanted to I love this community and all of you who make this city what it is. (Not that it's perfect, but nothing is).

Coda Brewing, Golden, CO

Last stop on the beer train. Wanted to do hyper local and this was where we landed.

It is a cool spot and doing some unique beers but I stay in my lane. The IPA is really good (one drop west coast ipa) but I'm just not a fan of simcoe hops but hey, when in Rome.

Stay safe and stay thirsty my friends.

Avery Brewing, Colorado

Had to stop by an OG (also had a coors banquet on draft across from Coors and I'm good forever).

They also had a self guided brewery tour which was just a fun and brief excursion. Just can't sit and drink. Gotta get some steps in.

Had to get the DIPA which I cannot remember the last time I drank. Tasted exactly as I remembered.

Stay safe and stay thirsty my friends.
