HOW'D I NEVER REALIZED THIS UNTIL NOW?! DEAR LORD, THE PATENTLY OBVIOUS FORSHADOWING!!!
For context to those who don't know, Radithor was a "medicine" that was really just distilled water containing at least 1 microcurie (37 kBq) of radium-226 isotope and 1 microcurie of radium-228 isotope. In other words, it was radioactive water that was big in between 1918 and 1930, used as a "cure-all" medicine during the "radium fad" of the time. It wasn't accepted by the FDA at the time but they had no power to shut it down. It all fell apart with the illness and death of business magnate Eben Byers, who took Radithor for a long while until he begun suffering from radiation poisoning and even had his jaw rot off because of it, before eventually dying.
Now, how would you imagine this existing in the world of Fallout, be it post-war or in the past? I'd guess this would exist in its original sense, as a 1920s "radium fad", but could this have had resulted in ghouls manifesting during the 1920s. Or a version of this drug was made in post-war America for consumption by ghouls, perhaps being what the drug ghouls take to keep from going feral but consumed in a mist form.
Note, this is a discussion, so I'd like to hear people's thoughts, ideas, and contentions.
One thing I'm liking about how the Fallout show is handling ghouls is making them have varying degrees of decay, with some looking more corpse-like than others,. without it having to do with age. At your worse, you got Set, looking like an emaciated corpse. Then you got ghouls like Charon, who's nasty but not set-levels of nasty. Then you got Hancock, who looks not that bad for a ghoul. And then you got Cooper Howard, who's rather good-looking for a ghoul but still undeniable that he's a ghoul.
But it does make me wonder, what if there's ghouls who look so un-decayed that they're actually undistinguishable from a smooth-skin (a "smooth-ghoul" if you will)? Could be that any decay they got is easily hidden away, that the only sign is how extra worn their skin is, or perhaps there's not a single visible hint that they're a ghoul. Would certainly allow for some interesting story telling, as well as furthering the understanding we don't know everything about ghouls.
For those who don't have access to both books, here's the run-down for each of these weapons:
Note, this post is which of these people would pick if only they could use/allow either only the Hollywood Heroes Tranq guns or Royal Flush Tranq Ammo for the Syringer
EDIT: Accidently posted this as "Help & Advice" when I meant "Misc." Fixed
